wonder what the record is for DP's in a game, thats 7 total for both teams,
and we have two more innings also.

Well, then we wouldn't have started with Brayan Pena, or whatever.

It’s more fun just to solely blame Olivo.
Why did Dayton sign Olivo, again?
Why can’t we just have Buck as the starter and Brayan “Clutch or clutchest player ever!?!?” Pena as our two catchers.

He better get in eventually, or he won’t be able to pitch even a single pitch because it’s been so long.

by blue bandwagon on Apr 21, 2009 10:07 PM EDT up reply actions
Yes, in general.
But when your closer hasn’t pitched in 8 days, and he’s promised twice now to do whatever it takes to get him up and in the game, you put him in the game.
If hell-or-highwater comes, have Cruz or whoever the fuck wants to close out the game. Anybody can close. This was the inning where we needed to stop them. Soria BADLY needs work.
Give Soria the fucking inning.
P.S.: However, it isn’t really a fair criticism. That would be not just outside of the box, but so far outside the box he’d be criticized for the move even if it paid off by most people.
hard to pin this one hillman's bullpen management
Cruz has been money this season, you’ve got to trust someone outside Soria in the bullpen. Yes, Soria hasn’t pitched in eight days, but that doesn’t mean you throw him out there just for the sake of throwing him out there
by RoyalsFanInBillings on Apr 21, 2009 10:09 PM EDT up reply actions 1 recs
SERIOUSLY
now hillman has probably COST US THIS GAME BECAUSE HE WOULDNT EVENLET SORIA GET SOME WORK

by sterlingice on Apr 21, 2009 10:07 PM EDT up reply actions
it doesn't matter
none of it makes any sense
it’s all just so bad
now soria hasn’t pitched in 9 days
and i will be willing to bet MONEY that when he does come in, he’s rusty, and maybe even blows the save… the idiocy continues
realistically speaking
it makes no sense
there is no logic to anything he does
none of it makes any sense
realistically speaking
Yeah.
It’s not fair at all to say that Hillman “cost us this game”.
And going with Cruz really isn’t that bad of a move at all. Cruz got beat. He’s allowed 2 baserunners all year: he allowed 2 today.
Tough to be too pissed off at him in this scenario.
you don't get it, he said soria was going to get work today
then, we got to within one. so hillman the genius decides, hey, we might get the lead, i better save soria. for another save. that never materializes. now he hasn’t pitched in even longer. there is no logic
realistically speaking
I know. I take it back.
I forgot about that.
Read my post above.
It still doesn’t count as “costing us the game”, but I would have definitely brought in Soria.
costing the game was me having some fun with it
but the whole thing is so asinine.. now we’re burnt cruz tonight, soria still hasn’t gotten work, we’ve burnt tejeda
so who’s left for tomorrow… a soria that hasn’t pitched in forever, ron mahay, and…maybe juan cruz? the whole thing makes no sense to me
realistically speaking
Agreed entirely.
Soria is going to have to pitch like 2 or 3 innings tomorrow, which is super super super stupid because the reason Trey gave as to not pitching Soria on Sunday in the 8th was…he’s been out too long to be stretched out like that.
Does Trey know what logic is?
so Cruz has given up three hits all year........
two of them are to Victor Martinez……..and that’s his first HR given up to a lefty since 2007 sometime
by Fernando Vina School of Linguistics on Apr 21, 2009 10:07 PM EDT reply actions
I can't believe Hillman used Cruz in that situation
what a joke, we should just fire him for giving up that HR.

I know Laffey isn’t that good, but I assume he got pretty lucky with a lot of well-timed (or, if you’re the Royals, badly-timed) DPs?
I'm not a sabermetrician, but I do play one at Driveline Mechanics.
Yes.
He did a really good job of making the pitches he needed to induce the GIDPs. But as always, it was partly luck.
It’s hard to be too pissed off about today. Cleveland is catching fire, kinda-sorta, and we are on the road with Pontoon as our starter.
Banny just better be pitching uncharacteristically well tomorrow.
I was actually asking some "real" saber-guys about GDPs
it was interesting. One was pretty convinced the numbers showed that it was almost completely the batter, not much with the pitcher
yeah, this sucks, but I think we all knew that Cleveland wasn’t going to be a .300 team this season.

Disagree in every way.
It feels really good to hurt this bad after losses.
It’s fun to play for shit. Even if you lose a bunch, it’s worth the physical, tangible light at the end of the tunnel as opposed to merely hoping that, if everything breaks right, in 2 years…
I like the pain. Because it makes the wins much better.
you might be right....
i dunno….losing games like tonite sucks….
what i’m talking about more than tonite is games like sunday…games like opening day….losing games b/c our manager is either clueless/not trying

by billybeingbilly on Apr 21, 2009 10:26 PM EDT up reply actions
No, I agree completely.
It definitely sucks a lot more when you lose, particularly when it’s in a heartbreaking fashion. This game doesn’t fall into that category for me, because I never fully believed we were going to come back.
Sunday was so fucking awful, though. It ruined my day, which had been excellent up to that point.
But, I’d rather have my entire day ruined on Sunday after Greinke’s performance made my Saturday.
It’s more of an up-and-down adventure, but I like it.
So, who thinks we win tomorrow?
I really don’t want to go back under .500.
And the last thing we can afford is one of those patented double-digit losing streaks.
I don't think so
Let’s face it, we got some decent starts from a # 4, but at that point in the rotation, you certainly expect some games like this one as well.
Chaim Mattis Keller New York City's # 1 Royals fan!
I just rewound it.
It’s a ball, but the ump always expands the strike zone for the game-ending strike.
Billy should have swung.
it's odd
Overall we have a good bullpen. But we have lost a large number of games with big homeruns being given up by the bullpen. This doesn’t work in my mind.
don't worry folks
soria is up to like, 8 days of rest, so he should be good for 1 batter tomorrow
the key thing is, you see, since he hasn’t worked in a while, we’re going to have to ease him back in
so probably 1 batter tomorrow night, give him a break to recover, and then maybe 2 batters the game after that.
realistically speaking
Not only a loss
But now Soria has gone so long without work that Trey will decide that he is too rusty to pitch again this year-60 day DL

Really, this wasn't that bad though.
Everyone expected to lose the majority of Ponson’s starts. When he pitches like he did tonight, no one should expect us to win.
While the late comeback was loads of fun, it was a game we looked like we were going to lose for just about the entire thing.
Maybe we can steal one tomorrow, That’d be fantastic. But, as long as we win Thursday, I’m not too pissed.
i want to win every series

Obviously.
But Cleveland is beginning to play really well.
And in a series where we are starting Pontoon and Banny, it wouldn’t be the worse thing in the world to “steal one” on the road, or whatever.
This weekend’s series is huge, though. We’ve gotta get back to our winning ways. The sooner the better.
yeah...the fact that we have ponson and banny going
makes sunday so much worse

Impossible for the Royals to lose 5 in a row right now.
At least until Greinke gives up a run.
unearned runs are very possible with our defense
