That is just horrible value
for a guy that can catch 100 passes this year and probably in 2010 as well. At least give us the 2nd rounder this year.

exactly what i was thinking
Bloomquist. God? Or just an illusion? You be the judge.

Yeah
a second-rounder seemed like not very much in exchange for a guy who can still compete at a near-Pro Bowl level, at least. I’d have held out for a second and a third, whether this year or next.
Gonzalez is apparently a total health nut, doing all kinds of yoga-type stuff and eating a strict vegan diet. He’s likely to play at least two more years; he’s certainly fit enough to do so.
We’ll miss him. He was an excellent player and kept his nose clean.
It's pronounced Poo-ZHOLS in Catalan.

it isn't that it is a 2nd round pick that bothers me the most...
it is that it is the 2nd round pick for NEXT year’s draft, not this year’s draft. If the Falcons do quite well next year (a very distinct possibility), their 2nd round pick is going to have a lot less value, and we will have given away a TE who still plays at a Pro Bowl level for an absolutely horrible value.
This is, I think, Pioli’s third big move since becoming GM (after hiring Haley and trading for Cassel), but this is the first move that gets a big, big F from me. I think Gonzo was worth the Falcons’ second-round and fourth-round picks this year. Pioli got snookered.

You have to discount the pick since it is from next year.
So it would essentially be like getting a 3rd or 4th round pick this year.

Word is
The Chiefs won’t keep the second rounder anyway, instead they will try to package it to make another trade this weekend. Sounds like they are going to be wheelin and dealin.

theres a very good chance that the falcons have a worse record next year than this past year...
so the pick would be higher…
surprise teams like Atlanta often fall back to the pack a little bit after the first year

They may have been a surprise
but they are a solid team. With Gonzalez there as a safety valve for Matt Ryan, I would expect a playoff appearance. They will be really good.

we'll see i guess...
but id be willing to bet on them losing more games this year than last

i heard that they wanted next years pick
because the chiefs consensus is that this years draft is pretty weak for the positions that they need
by royalsfan03 on Apr 23, 2009 7:01 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Even so...
a pick in the immediately upcoming draft is always going to be more valuable than one for next year’s draft. So, even if Pioli thought that this year’s overall draft pool sucked, you could always flip a second-rounder this year for a 2nd next year + something.
And really, I don’t care how bad the top guys might be, you still are going to have at least a few guys in the first couple rounds you want to snag.

My head says not a terrible trade
My heart says this sucks. Probably my favorite Chief of all-time. Sucks to see him go to Atlanta.

really bad day
first The Bullpen debacle: First Blood, Part 6. Then the Gonzo news.
I actually think the trade value is good. The best Peterson ever got offered was a third rounder last year. Its just that my gut hurts cause I loved T-Gon so much. He was the lone bright spot in many horrible years, and the face of the franchise. Mostly, it hurts selfishly, because I really wanted him to retire wearing the red jersey.

You guys all don't realize what his "value" was.
Remember last trading deadline? We were asking for a 2nd, and no one offered anything besides a 3rd round pick. And that was the Giants, who are picking near the very, very end.
He is old. Eventually, he has to decline (right?). We are rebuilding. A 2nd round pick is quite valuable.
A 2nd round pick >> 3rd round pick. Always. I’d rather wait a year and get a much higher pick than take lesser value this year.
And if you thought we would be getting anything higher than that, you don’t understand the market. Kellen Winslow, who is 25 and about to enter his prime, just netted a 2nd round pick and a 5th round pick next year. Conceivably, Tony could retire 2 years from now.
As fans, you always tend to think that your own players have a higher value than they truly do. And obviously, everyone loves Tony. He’s been the one constant throughout my entire Chiefs fanhood. It’s impossible not to love him. He was “our” guy, and he was the absolute best. But, it was time to move on.

Here are the stats from Football Outsiders for Gonzalez and Winslow...
Player Team DYAR Rk YAR Rk DVOA Rk VOA Passes Yards EYds TD Catch Rate
88-T.Gonzalez KC 243 1 232 1 16.4% 13 15.4% 155 1058 1,392 10 62%
80-K.Winslow CLE -23 35 -31 35 -11.5% 32 -13.0% 83 428 401 3 52%
Not quite the same player, huh? Throw in Winslow’s idiocy (“I’m a soldier!!”, motorcycle stuntman impression) and his proclivity for injury ON the field, too (played in 44 of 80 games from 2004-2008), the fact that Gonzalez says he can play for three or four more years, and there isn’t much question who I’d rather have. The Falcons got an absolute STEAL. No question. It may have been the best Pioli could do (I don’t doubt he did his homework before pulling the deal), but I’d much rather hang onto him (even if just another two years instead of 3-4) than give him up for that price.

No, Winslow is not as good
But no one was going to give up the same value because every team thinks they can bring out the best in those players that haven’t fully performed. Everyone needs to understand:
There was not going to be a better offer for Gonzalez.
The question is merely whether he should have been kept instead. I will miss Tony a lot, and it will really hurt to see him in another uniform. (At least it’s not a team I hate.) My perspective on the trade, though, is Tony would have played – what? – three more good years with the Chiefs? Maybe? A second round pick could play 10 good years for the Chiefs. I’m not thrilled with the trade, but I don’t hate the return.
by BrRoyal on Apr 24, 2009 1:28 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Exactly.
It makes sense to be frustrated at the trade, because of its implications and such.
But the value is good.
And obviously Winslow isn’t as good. I wasn’t trying to really compare the two. I was just pointing out the similarities in the situations.
For the record: I want no part of some early TE selection. We took Brad Cottam last year in Round 3. Unless we are attempting to think of ways to fit both on the field (like James Casey), I don’t want to spend another high draft pick on another tight end. No thank you.
by rockchalk on Apr 24, 2009 7:37 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
No we understand his value
And I think he was more valuable to us here. I suppose with a new man at the helm of the draft process, we may be better off with that pick. If we take Chase Coffman somehow, I will forgive them for trading Tony.

No choice
Unfortunately, there was no choice. Word is that Gonzo was serious about the trade this year, and I do believe that a 2nd was the best we could get.
I agree that the Falcons got a great player. I don’t think that the trade was lopsided though given the realities of the market.

This is kind of what I thought.
There would be no way we’d trade him unless he went to Pioli and said, I’m out. Get the best you can for me. I’ve spent my time here.
