Or so says one of the totally legitimate rumor sites. Considering Pena historically has struggled against RHP and has a questionable defensive reputation, he might actually clear waivers.

This clears a spot for the return of Jose Guillen.

He's the third catcher who duplicates the platoon splits of the first and second catchers

With Guillen coming back, it was more important to keep a defensive caddy for him.

Plus, this might be the best time to slip Pena through waivers without anyone claiming him. It does not look like any team is in desperate need for a backup catcher at the moment.

that side of it makes sense

but i just don’t really know why he was on the roster for 2 weeks to begin with

it seems like he would have had a better chance of sneaking through waivers when there were a million dudes out there after roster cuts…

setting off a Roman Colon-type waiver war

was that the guy the past offseason?

Seriously, what are the odds that the Royals and Braves would be interested in the same player?

Jairo Cuevas

Here.

Although, I see he’s a FA now. I hadn’t heard that we got rid of him again.

I like him but it had to be him

If he clears waivers, that’s great. If not, and he ends up elsewhere, there will be no long-term negative impact for KC. I guess in an ideal world I’d rather see TPJ go, but as long as he’s only being used a late inning defensive replacement, he probably still has more value than a 3rd catcher.

I think B. Pena can refuse his assignment if he clears waivers but not sure he’d have a reason for doing so. If his defense is truly unspectacular, then I don’t see him being claimed.

Also I don’t see Buck and Olivo going anywhere. Buck has shown some nice offense and Olivo has the better defensive reputation and can (theoretically) mash lefties. Also Olivo is Greinke’s guy and I actually imagine that carries some weight.

It does not look like Pena has been outrighted previously

If so, he cannot refuse the minor league assignment if he clears waivers.

BTW - My prediction for Guillen tonight

2-4 with a HR and 3 rbi – for some reason I think he’ll rake tonight

I was close

He did something even more improbable – drew a walk!

I looooove Brayan Pena.

But this makes sense.

We were hardly playing him. If someone picks him up, someone picks him up. Shit like that happens.

I’d rather just trade Olivo, but whatever.

Sucks

If we lose him, but the only other option that made sense at this time would have been to send Mahay/Farns to the DL with back spasms.

We (OMG I can’t fucking believe I’m about to type this) can’t risk losing TpJ at this point due to the slow start of Aviles considering we have no real SS depth in the system to speak of.

And, RR, I agree that I think he would have snuck through easier at the beginning of the season, but I heard an interview w/ someone (can’t recall who, some baseball pundit, Stark/Olney type I’m sure) that thought the opposite…

BOOM! ROASTED!

NO!!

We have some White Sux games in early May, hence we need to keep Farns on roster a little bit longer.

Broken Finger, Maybe

Stashed on the DL.

I used to be an A's fan until they left town and got good.
