Okay, so ERA is a somewhat flawed statistic, but KC does also lead the majors in WHIP at 1.19, are 5th in walks allowed, and 4th in strikeouts. Those are very encouraging numbers.

Even if ERA has problems as a stat for individuals, it’s not terrible as a team stat, given the involvement of defense. Yes, there are luck elements, too, but that’s a good sign for the Royals run prevention in general so far.

I'm not a sabermetrician, but I do play one at Driveline Mechanics.

First in FIP too (3.63)

which is what you get with lots of strikeouts, not many walks, and generally keeping the ball in the park. The team HR/FB ratio is 9.4% which is a little low, but not completely unreasonable given the K suppresses HRs a bit. The Royals are also second in GB% at 47.3%.
