I'm just a little worried

The hype meter is about as high as it’s been for any game in a while. I’m a little worried about a let down.

Then again, good ol’ rain might put a kibosh on it

by averagegatsby on Apr 29, 2009 8:23 PM EDT up reply actions

His velocity is down

Average FB at 92 mph, as opposed to 95 last year. But I don’t think that’s the only thing. He’s got two good pitches and the other two aren’t very impressive. You can be a dominant reliever with that kind of pitching profile. But it’s hard to be a great starter with that.

The immoderate moderator

by Scott McKinney on Apr 29, 2009 8:25 PM EDT up reply actions

i don't understand the loss of velocity

he was throwing hard when starting last year, i wonder if it’s going to come back as the season progresses

realistically speaking

by slayor on Apr 29, 2009 8:26 PM EDT up reply actions

No idea why he's lost so much velocity

Some of it is that last year he was in the bullpen part of the time, so his average FB velocity in those outings would be higher. But that doesn’t account for a loss of 3 mph. There might be something physical/mechanical there, but I haven’t heard anything.

The immoderate moderator

by Scott McKinney on Apr 29, 2009 8:28 PM EDT up reply actions

exactly, even in his starts he was still throwing low to mid 90s

I really don't think he's ready for the majors yet

Once MLB hitters have seen his stuff, they know how to hit it. He has lots of talent, but was rushed due to the Tigers thin pitching.

realistically speaking

by slayor on Apr 29, 2009 8:23 PM EDT up reply actions

Yup

And he lives and dies by the groundball (didn’t even get a lot of K’s in A-ball). And in the majors, it’s easier for batters to make solid contact with even sinking balls and hit them for line drives. He needs more minor league experience.

Kauffman Stadium Organ

Don’t know if anyone had noticed this year that the trademark Kauffman Stadium organ had been quiet so far this year. Heard today that it is still in there, they are just looking for a new player for it. That is why all the prerecorded, generic sound bites during the at-bats. Don’t know if this had been mentioned before but I hadn’t seen any discussion of it.

Sign of a good team

This team probably expected ZG to go 9 complete no hit innings. But he struggled and gave up his first run of the yet. So…. what do they do? Their ace is struggling, they rally, and go ballistic on the other team. This team has completely stepped up tonight. It’s amazing! And in turn, I think ZG will return the favor.

I don't get it

Ryan said that Rios was a really good right fielder, but that was a crappy play
and he misplayed a ball in the first game as well

he is very good

his arm is possibly the best in the game…but he has been a little too aggressive on a few balls tonight

by Fernando Vina School of Linguistics on Apr 29, 2009 10:23 PM EDT up reply actions

I think Ryan probably saw him a make a flashy play once. To be fair I’ve seen him get to a lot of balls in foul territory in a way that reminds me of DDJ in left field. He’s made some shitty plays though that I haven’t seen DDJ make.

Maybe we can finally stop hearing about how good Rios’ defense is now. I know the ground is wet but that was straight brutal.

It’s at 6.45 now according to Gameday. Good work.

How long do we let Grienke go?

Davies will bounce back tomorrow so we shouldn’t need the pen much….. tonight let him go 6 or 7?
