Of course

When we’re being backed by our best pitcher the offense EXPLODES. Where was this for 80% of our losses and poor pitching preformances?

I love to see a lot of runs being scored

but this team needs to learn how to score at least 4 runs on a slow offense day. I’m tired of seeing an anemic offense every other day.

Difference between a GOOD pitcher and a GREAT pitcher:

A GOOD pitcher is effected by a small strike zone because he still has to put the ball in the zone to get a swing.

A GREAT pitcher has no problems with a small strike zone because he can induce swings on pitches out of the zone.

Perfect example tonight.

baseball teams don’t pay analysts sh-t, because so many people want to work for them.

Couple that with the inevitable frustrations of not getting listened to, misunderstood, ignored, and stuff that goes on in any org, that would make things not fun. Unless things change, guys like Tango are smart - do it on a part-time consulting basis so you aren’t financiallly dependent on the whims of management (which could change anh moment) and have to relocate to work for a bunch of a-holes.

Just wondering.

Has anybody heard. Has Bryan Pena cleared waivers??

by Chyladin on Apr 29, 2009 10:59 PM EDT reply actions

He might not even have been put on waivers yet

The DFA period is 10 days. The waiver period is 3 days. The Chisox DFA’d MacDougal a week ago, but just put him on waivers today (or maybe yesterday). It makes sense to talk trade a little for a while to see if there is interest before putting the player on waivers.

The immoderate moderator

by Scott McKinney on Apr 29, 2009 11:02 PM EDT up reply actions

Other Catchers

Possible that they might try to work out a trade for Olivo or Buck while Pena is going through the DFA period? If so, they can pull Pena back into the 25-man right?

FKA "MileHighKCfan"

by JSouth on Apr 29, 2009 11:05 PM EDT up reply actions

You can pull a player off of waivers, but not off of a DFA

A DFA’d player must be traded, waived or released w/in 10 days. If he clears waivers, he can be sent down (in Pena’s case, because of his service time, he has to agree to the assignment or become a FA).

The immoderate moderator

by Scott McKinney on Apr 29, 2009 11:07 PM EDT up reply actions

So if a player can be pulled off of waivers

we could waive him and then pull him back?

FKA "MileHighKCfan"

by JSouth on Apr 29, 2009 11:10 PM EDT up reply actions

No

The Royals didn’t just waive him. They DFA’d him. The DFA means he has to be traded, released or go completely through the waiver process (clear waivers or be claimed) within 10 days.

Bloomquist's OBP is quite high

Well over .400 at the moment.

So far

If small samples of data are meaningful, he’s one of the best OBPers in baseball!

Tougher question.

At least I think it is.

What is Greinke’s FIP?

by AxDxMx on Apr 29, 2009 11:06 PM EDT reply actions

low

I'm not a sabermetrician, but I do play one at Driveline Mechanics.

by Matt Klaassen on Apr 29, 2009 11:06 PM EDT up reply actions

I was wondering if it would be 0

but guessed it wouldn’t be because of the extra base hits he’s given up

by AxDxMx on Apr 29, 2009 11:07 PM EDT up reply actions

FIP only counts walks, Ks, and HRs

it’s ((HR*13+BB*3-K*2)/IP) + ~3.2 (varies by season, it’s usually around 3.2)

that might be wrong, it’s off the top of my head

I'm not a sabermetrician, but I do play one at Driveline Mechanics.

by Matt Klaassen on Apr 29, 2009 11:09 PM EDT up reply actions

Heh....

I had it backwards in my head. I was thinking fielding dependent.

Are you telling me Jesus Christ cant hit a curve ball?

by averagegatsby on Apr 29, 2009 11:07 PM EDT up reply actions

first thought was yes

then I took a closer look at the knees…that’s a pretty masculine-looking knee, right?

by RoyalsFanInBillings on Apr 29, 2009 11:09 PM EDT up reply actions

1) all knees are hideous

and
2) look at the hands. Very feminine.

WTF, self?

by minda33 on Apr 29, 2009 11:09 PM EDT up reply actions

knees are hideous?

in fairness, I’ve never paid attention to knees before, so I guess they could be hideous. I always just of acknowledged they were there and left it at that…

I've never seen any that were

attractive. At best, they’re neutral, I think.

Just had this thought and it made me laugh

Tonight, we saw Greinke’s worst performance of the season so far.

Let that sink in a bit, see how it feels.

by RoyalsFanInBillings on Apr 29, 2009 11:07 PM EDT reply actions

i agree....

he gave up runs tonight, but they were flares and dunkers……the 5 IP game was more of a struggle, to me.

by Fernando Vina School of Linguistics on Apr 29, 2009 11:11 PM EDT up reply actions

if at the end of the year

we have to choose between that performance and tonight’s as his worst of the season, I’ll be a happy man

I guess

although if you’re trying to give DDJ a rest, using him as a late-inning sub seems to defeat the purpose

not a horrible sin, or anything, just doesn't quite make sense

I see no problem with it

but your point is well made

FKA "MileHighKCfan"

by JSouth on Apr 29, 2009 11:15 PM EDT up reply actions

It's not that he needs a rest

But that it gives you an opportunity to give him a little rest, especially with a day game tomorrow and no off days for a while.

The immoderate moderator

by Scott McKinney on Apr 29, 2009 11:16 PM EDT up reply actions

My guess

Is that DDJ hasn’t been hitting well and since the BJ’s were bringing 3 LHP starters in the 4-game series, TH wanted to sit him against two of them. So I think it isn’t about rest as much as sitting him against some LHP’s while he’s scuffling.

now that I think of it

I didn’t realize Crisp had played every game

he should get a day off soon. That’s too much

by Matt Klaassen on Apr 29, 2009 11:17 PM EDT up reply actions

Probably some game soon (like maybe Sunday) when a RHP starts

So Maier can sub for him. Then again, Bloomy’s wOBA is something like .375 or more right now…

by Matt Klaassen on Apr 29, 2009 11:14 PM EDT reply actions

Prior to the strikeout to end the inning

there were runners on 1st and 3rd, grounded into the 6-4-3 DP and the runner scored from 3rd.

FKA "MileHighKCfan"

by JSouth on Apr 29, 2009 11:18 PM EDT up reply actions

when?

1) error to start inning
2) single puts runners at first and third
3) 6-4-3 DP, run scores from third
4) strikeout swinging

by Fernando Vina School of Linguistics on Apr 29, 2009 11:18 PM EDT up reply actions

ok, nevermind

for a while it had some kind of weird double-play/triple-play thing up. It said the inning was over before the strikeout. Obviously I was interested in how a triple play went down.

It's certainly one hell of a good game

But it’s more of a novelty. Guys with a better game than that (like Butler’s) don’t get as much attention…and for no good reason.

One of the cool things I remember

was on that horrible Tigers team… 2003? Dmitri Young was a double away from the cycle… and hit a triple That’s right Da Meat Hook outran a double and thus the cycle. That’s awesome.

So here is a hypothetical situtions for you...

Suppose Soria would have been available going into the 7th inning. Would we have let him pitch the last three innings of a blowout in order to get the three-inning save?

by Trey Hillman's Chin on Apr 29, 2009 11:26 PM EDT reply actions

Why not,

isn’t it Trey’s job to get Soria saves?

Hitting streaks are the most overly talked about achievement in baseball

The fact that a player is on a 9-game hitting streak is uninteresting, unimpressive and essentially irrelevant.
