The Big Prediction Contest - 2009

Many of you will remember that last year we had a Big Prediction Contest, which gave rise to some interesting community predictions.  Last year's top three were:

1.  Gopherballs 45 (won on tie breaker)

2.  RoyalsRetro 45

3.  kcisbetterthanstlateverything 43

Now the Big Prediction Contest is back and better than ever.  I've added prediction categories for grit, fire and veteran leadership.  Ok, not really, but that would be fun, no?  Ok, not really.

Here's the deal, cut and paste the following list and add in your predictions.  I'll record the entries and score them at the end of the season.  Will may again generously donate a RR t-shirt as a prize to the winner.  If you get every prediction right, he you might even win a RR t-shirt that he's actually blogged in (sweet!).

Predict the following team stats (give a number):

Record
Division finish

oh, one thing

is the contest going to use WAR as listed at FanGraphs as the “official” one? I only ask because it’s sort of an “open source” thing that people could add up using the basic concepts, but with different replacement levels, part adjustments, defensive stats, with or without baserunning, GDP stuff, etc. In fact, it wouldn’t shock me if THT implemented a version of it very soon, for example… In principle, anyone could.

My main point is just to ask for clarification for all of us: is FanGraphs’ version of WAR official? And on what date, as they might update things inthe weeks following the season, as they did this past offseason.

Good question

I’m going to go with the Fangraphs version. As far as the date, it will be whenever I run the numbers, which will likely be within one week of the end of the regular season.

It’s interesting that we are currently scoring 10-3 (with RR’s presumed sarcastic entry) on the above .500 side. I guess we are optimistic homers. I think I’m being pretty optimistic with my 82 wins.

No, actually

that’s based on some of the stuff I was doing with BaseRuns-based estimators and the different projections systems.

Bringing you more-or-less replacement level analysis and commentary to Driveline Mechanics and elsewhere since sometime in 2008.

by Matt Klaassen on Apr 5, 2009 2:26 AM EDT up reply actions

So the earlier numbers you ran came up with 78-79 wins and now with a BaseRuns-based estimator, it comes out to something like 72 wins? It’s odd that they would be so different. Either one of those methods is poor, or it shows that the conversion from player projections to team win totals is pretty unreliable.

The immoderate moderator

by Scott McKinney on Apr 5, 2009 2:49 AM EDT up reply actions

NY why are you calling out RR so much

I’ve never seen him really stop and call you an “elitest know it all”, but you constantly call him a snarky pessimist.

The numbers I have seen projected are all below .500, so how can you say that the fan prediction numbers with fans picking above .500 be anything than the fact that this is a website where Royals fans come, and those fans obviously want the royals to win.

And the comments like “One more very important bench role choice and the Royals record could free-fall” are so misguided. The point was not that the decision might cause a free fall, but it might cost a game or two. Remember TPJ had one of the lowest win shares in history last season. RR never claimed that it was a world ending decision, but rather that he felt it was not the right one! You were critical of the nonexistent hyperbole in his post, when in actuality your comments are full of over the top jabs back at RR.

At least Wally Joyner's not on the team....

by tcon125 on Apr 5, 2009 4:48 PM EDT up reply actions

Was this comment related to the above comments?

I wasn’t “calling out” RR or even discussing anything with him. I wasn’t even "calling out " d_f. With regard to RR, d_f or anybody, most of us are snarky in our own ways, me included. RR has provided his share this offseason. He snarks, I respond with snark; it’s all good.

The numbers I have seen projected are all below .500, so how can you say that the fan prediction numbers with fans picking above .500 be anything than the fact that this is a website where Royals fans come, and those fans obviously want the royals to win.

I don’t know what this means. I don’t think I criticized any prediction except for joking about RR’s entirely non-serious prediction above.
And the comments like "One more very important bench role choice and the Royals record could free-fall" are so misguided. The point was not that the decision might cause a free fall, but it might cost a game or two

It is exactly my point that this decision should not be expected to cost the Royals even as much as one game. Perhaps one game (but not two) if he got a lot of playing time. But in a bench role (even one which is more than just defensive replacement), he wouldn’t likely cost the Royals even one full game.

RR never claimed that it was a world ending decision, but rather that he felt it was not the right one! You were critical of the nonexistent hyperbole in his post, when in actuality your comments are full of over the top jabs back at RR.

First of all, if he needs defending, RR can defend himself quite well. Second, I was critical of the snark and hyperbole in his many posts reacting to many recent decisions. If you think he just commented that he didn’t think these were the right decisions, then you must have missed a couple dozen of his posts.

Regardless, this is much ado about nothing. RR is going to speak his mind, as am I. We all share our thoughts. Sometimes we’re snarky. Sometimes we’re snarky about each other. And so it goes.

How many chances do you think Gordon is going to have to drive in Guillen and Jacobs?

Bringing you more-or-less replacement level analysis and commentary to Driveline Mechanics and elsewhere since sometime in 2008.

by Matt Klaassen on Apr 5, 2009 10:09 PM EDT up reply actions

Only for maybe a month

Trey never met a lineup he could not shuffle, and if I am right that Gordon leads the team in OPS, Gordon will settle somewhere in 3-5.

But I do have a fear that after Jim Wong turns his memo later today, Trey will bat Gordon lead off.

I would be thrilled

although my own suggestions are somewhat different.

Are you referring to the Mellinger interview about Wong letting him know what’s up no the intertubez?

Tie breaker – how many games out of first will the Royals finish? 5

SB%

He does have a 79% career SB%. I’m not sure, but that’s probably the best on the team (at least of anyone who might have 10 SB attempts this year).

that's what I voted for, too

he was 9 for 11 last season.. CHONE an 80%.success rate.

Yeah, tough call

If he gets 10 SBs then he might lead in %, but I figure he’ll be on base more this season so his chance at 10+ is higher than previous seasons.
