The Royals Are 12-10

Thanks to a huge turnaround series against the Blue Jays, the Royals improved to 12-10, back to two games over .500 for the first time since they were 9-7 a week ago.

I'm working on a new Secrets of the AL Central post for later tonight, so I'll forgo the game recap if you don't mind.

One glaring problem with the 12-10 record

is the Royals terrible 1-4 record in 1 run games. This trend will cost them the division if they can’t get it turned around.

I'd rather be watching baseball.

AND

avg .249 = AL 13th (out of 14)
obp .339 = AL 10th
runs 97 = AL 9th (tied with others)
hits 179 = AL 13th
so 145 = AL 5th (in this case being close to top ain’t good)
bb 81 = AL 7th

This, however, surprised me:
slg .429 = AL 7th (I would have guessed much lower)

See, now THAT is closer to my level of understanding as to statistics/mathematics

What’s that equation/stat called? I could put together some spreadsheets using that stat no problem.

That is my Pitching/Hitting Equilibrium for Wins (PHEW)

As in, “The Royals scored just enough runs to support their excellent pitching tonight. Phew!”

exactly

the concern, of course, is that the pitching is bound to come off a bit and the hitting probably isn’t likely to get much better to make up for any slack

I would actually say that the pitching is bound to slack off, but the hitting should improve some as well

The Royals team hitting is still more than a little below league average. There is room to improve, and I think they will overall.

Whose the last guy to hit .500?

I don’t know, but the next one is Alberto Callaspo

Bloomquist is also due to get hot

They might not have room to improve

But other players, real contributors, do not only have room to improve, but should be expected to improve.

2 of the 1 run games were a result of hitting a HR when down by more than that in the 9th

So you can throw those out… 1-2 isn’t any kind of trend to get worried about.

I think the Royals record in 1-run games will improve

The Royals have a good bullpen, period. I think Hillman is figuring out who he can count on and who he can’t. Farnsworth will have fewer opportunities to blow leads. You heard it here 37th.

If the Royals end up being in the race and want to make moves

I hope they look at picking up a guy for the bullpen. The pen is pretty good overall, but I’m still not all that confident with Jamey Wright being the bridge to Cruz (who’s the bridge to Soria).

by Top Ramen on May 1, 2009 9:48 AM EDT up reply actions

I'd love to see Tejeda and/or Rosa as the bridge to Cruz

I think the bullpen is good and deep. It’s good right now and two of the better pitches in the bullpen mix (Rosa and Bale) aren’t even in the pen yet. I really don’t think the Royals need another reliever. If you’re talking about a stretch run, then definitely a bat or maybe a starter. But I’m actually quite comfortable with Greinke-Meche-Davies-Hochevar-Bannister.

You're really sold on Rosa.

When can we expect him called up?

If you were thinking, you wouldn't have thought that.

by Warden11 on May 2, 2009 12:09 AM EDT up reply actions

No idea

It is going to take some trade(s) and/or injury(ies). Even if Mahay goes on the DL, Bale will be coming back fairly soon, and then there’s Waechter too.

Went to the game

It was awesome…obviously the win made it really enjoyable but the atmosphere was surprisingly good for a wet Thursday day game.

Was really impressed with the K, I’d already been once but it was so crowded on the Saturday that I went that I couldn’t really look around a whole lot. The standing room only area in the outfield is pretty sweet. I was standing out there when Buck’s triple rolled out to the wall and we were heckling the hell out of Wells and Rios, good times.

Let’s sweep the weak-ass Twins now!

I'm geeked

tomorrow is the first of May and they have played themselves out of contention for the first time since 2003. Now they are here playing the Twins and I have tickets in hand and can go to the Metrodome ready to make a jackass of myself. Life is good…

I haven't read thru all of today's game comments

but I had to mention this. I was listening to ESPN radio this morning on my way into work and was treated to an incredibly in-depth analysis by Howie Long on his 3rd and Long. Let me start by saying this is the lamest commentary on radio today. Anyway, Howie did not endear himself to me any more is that he was talking about Zack and couldn’t take the effort to learn to how to pronounce his last name correctly. I can’t believe someone is paying him to do this.

Who would even think he would have any expertise to speak of regarding baseball? That’s ridiculous.

Hey, don't dog on Howie!

He’s a self-confessed steroid user, he’s the spokesman for that incredibly successful company General Motors, and he played for the Oakland Raiders, who clearly taught him all the right values! Successful people like that can’t be bothered with KC losers like Zack.

Anyone else have a Frank Grimes Jr moment

when Trey left Wright in there after giving up the single after the homerun?

by Top Ramen on May 1, 2009 9:47 AM EDT reply actions

I was surprised

I would have pulled him. But he settled down, took care of business, he sinker started sinking and he got his groundballs.
