Welcome Home Travis Metcalf! Former Jayhawk great claimed by the Kansas City Royals

Copied over from Rock Chalk Talk.  Needless to say I am pretty happy with this move.

The Kansas City Royals claimed former KU great Travis Metcalf today off waivers from the Texas Rangers.  Metcalf (26) plays third base and is considered an above average defender with some good pop in his bat.  His major league batting line is .249/.300/.475 in 242 plate appearances.

Metcalf owns the University of Kansas single season home run record with 18 in 2004.  He was an 11th round draft choice that year.

Oddly enough Mom and Dad Metcalf were in Lawrence just a few weeks ago.  Travis' younger brought Tyler plays for the Western Illinois Leathernecks.  The Metcalfs came to Hoglund to cheer on Tyler during WIU series against Kansas.  Tyler looked plenty good in his own right.  He hit three homeruns in two games.

I thought this was odd

I guess it’s simply a “depth” pickup since that seems to be DM’s latest watch word. But, I guess I’d prefer us to pick up some more pitchers. It’s weird that pitching was supposed to be our strength and it now seems a bit worrisome.

Don't think it's that odd

If Gordon get’s hurt (knocking on wood), a guy in AAA to bring up who plays exclusively 3rd base is never bad.

Sadly, his bat seems to be Pena-esque when translating to the big leagues

Oh to hell with you bastard man!

To hell with you!

That MLB batting line is more Smithesque than Penaesque.

In seriousness, he is OBP challenged, but he is young, with only half a season of MLB experience. He already has the power and he is a plus fielder. It isn’t like he is going to be a huge star but the guy is a solid MLB roster addition. Plus, he is a Jayhawk so I will cheer my bloody lungs out for him.

yeah, was just referring to what CHONE and ZiPS project for a hypothetical majors performance

no problem with the pickup, just don’t know much about him

he’s not Gookie Dawkins, at least

What do CHONE and ZiPS know about Jayhawk magic!

OK, I’m a fan. Metcalf is already my favorite Royal. Heck, if Farnsworth played at KU I would even find a way to give him some sort of compliment.

He's from Wichita or somewhere like that, right?

Close enough – you’ve now been assigned as his fan.
