Red Sox pitching coach John Farrell lavishes praise on right-handed reliever Ramon Ramirez, calling him "fearless" and raving about his work ethic.... "He's a dream," Farrell says. "He's low-maintenance, self-directed and he loves to compete." Ramirez is nothing short of an elite reliever outside of Coors Field, where he pitched for the Rockies his first two seasons.... He owns a 6.62 ERA in 46 career appearances at Coors, a 1.93 ERA in 124 appearances everywhere else.

Rosensquirrel. Yes, I know RamRam's FIP isn't so great at the moment, but it's good to hear about a former Royal even when he's on some team that doesn't get much press.

Sounds like future closer material

At Royals Corner, someone asked for an “All Ex-Royals team”. The team was pretty weak honestly, except four outfield (Beltran/Dye/Damon), and the bullpen was just LOADED. RamRam, Nunez, Howell, Nelson, Dennys Reyes, Dotel, Chad Durbin, Affeldt, Shawn Camp, even DJ Carrasco is pitching well. I don’t know what that means other than maybe failed starter can make good relievers.

It would nice to have him right now

As it is, we spent $15.25m on two inferior (one massively so, one not by much) relievers to replace him. RamRam over the same period will come to $440k and whatever he gets in arb next year.

I’m not sure Covelli makes that a good deal, but that’s just me.

It would definitely be nice to have him still

But with the Gordon injury right now, we’d have DDJ in CF, Guillen in RF, and presumably Teahen in LF. With Bloomquist(??) at 3B? Or maybe Maier in LF with Teahen at 3B? Or (God forbid) Aviles over to 3B and TPJ/Hernandez starting at SS almost daily?

And who would be leading off? With DDJ’s slump, it’s doubtful he would have stayed at the top of the order long (then again, even with his slump, he’s still batting 2nd). Even if Crisp hadn’t been performing so well, the trickle effect from him manning CF has definitely been a plus.

I'm sure RamRam would have

been able to lock down / hold at least 2 or 3 of the games we’ve blown in the 7th-8th this year… that is for sure.

WE CAN ALL BLAME TORII HUNTER

If Hunter takes KC’s money then we don’t have Guillen and we still have RamRam as well as playing Teahen, DDJ and Hunter in the outfield. Damn you Hunter first you turn us down then you rob Olivo of a HR ! Curse your House

I don't know how to put this but I'm kind of a big deal.

He didn't come here because Kansas City doesn't have enough African-Americans

That’s why he signed to play in Orange County.

Hunter + KC Star would be awesome

A guy somehow parlays a robbed home runs and a series of about average (2-3 WAR) seasons into 5/90… the usual geniuses would kiss his ass so much there would be a chapstick shortage.

Exactly

The OC has a thriving African-American community. It’s pretty much exactly like Harlem or Atlanta.

I wonder

how many of those “everyman” African-Americans he’s out interacting with in the first place, regardless of where he lives. Um, zero?

heh heh

Seriously, though, didn’t Moore makes offers to such that he could have gotten Jones/Hunger and Gulllen?

that Hunter contract is awful. 5/90. Yikes.

I just about threw up in my mouth

Imagining both Hunter’s contract AND Jones laying waste to the Royals’ payroll over the next 5 years or so. Good God.

Can someone explain the "loves to compete" cliche for me?

are there a lot of pro baseball players out there who ask their pitching coaches “Is there anyway I can strike this guy out without hurting his feelings?” or say “I’m just hoping we all have fun in these extra innings in the playoffs!”

I wonder why his strikeouts are down so much

He’s looked good when I’ve seen him pitch and his velocity isn’t down. But oddly he’s down more than 4 K/9 this year.

The Red Sox

are teaching him to play the game the right way.

Strike outs are boring and fascist.

but seriously

who knows. I’m not a PItch f/x guy at this point, so who knows about the motion. But strangely, his BB rate is also down. His velocity is about the same or higher. It’s early enough in the season that (aside from the generic sample size qualifications) that it might be affected by the specific hitters he’s faced.

One interesting thing (as of this posting) is that he’s throwing his slider less only 7% of the time this season, as opposed to about 19% of the time in 2008. Maybe that’s the deal.

If the Royals really are going to stay in contention (and it looks like they will), Crisp is the better fit for the team. That doesn’t mean I can’t remember The Reliever With The Tiny Head fondly, though.

I assume it is a small sample statistical anomaly

But it could be pitch selection. If so, he needs to fix it. While his BB’s are down too, it’s not by nearly as much as his 50% decrease in K’s. He’s got to get the K’s back up. I imagine they will come. I loved Team Ramrod last year. Interestingly, I saw him as a “free” acquisition since the Royals traded DLR for him (who I also kind of liked too). But DLR is actually pitching very well as a starter for the Rox this year (133 tRA+ as a starter this year and 112 tRA+ as a starter last year). I don’t think DLR is that good, but he’s at least decent.

Maybe he just faced Alberto Callaspo's AL East twin 20 times or something

think about it, no strikesouts, no walks, only 1 homer
