Does Yesterday's Debacle Feel Like Deja Vu?

Well it should, because it is eerily similar to KC's first game in Oakland Last year.  It was a little earlier in the year, but here was the situation on April 18th, 2008:

The Royals came into Oakland still feeling pretty good about themselves after starting the year 9-7.  They sent Brian Bannister to the hill with his spotless 3-0 record and microscopic 0.86 ERA to face an Oakland offense that was struggling to say the least.  They had lost 4 of their previous 5 games while scoring a total of 7 runs.

Needless to say the Royals lost that game in similar fashion to last night, or at least a similar score (13-2).  Bannister actually held it together for a while and the Royals led 2-1 going into the bottom of the fifth, when he was touched for 4, effectively ending the game for the Royals and their dormant offense.  It was the two headed godzilla of Yashuiko Yabuta and Hideo Nomo that really opened the flood gates by giving up 8 runs as they combined to pitch the eighth inning.

The A's bats were officially alive again and they swept the Royals by a combined score of 26-8 in three games.  This firmly entrenched the Royals in one of their patented losing streaks as they were swept again the next series, this time at home at the hands of the Indians...combined score 26-7.  ouch!!

Here's hoping the similarities between last year and this end now.

I had kinda thought about that last night...

but for me, the hochevar angle sorta overwhelmed everything else

by Freneau on May 13, 2009 3:06 PM EDT reply actions

According to Roger Twibell

hochevar got shelled because Hillman didn’t start the starting catcher…Olivo’s superior game calling skills would have made the difference. okay, he didn’t quite say that, but he questioned starting Buck with Hoch on the mound.

We always did feel the same, We just saw it from a different point of view, Tangled up in blue.

see my post below and lump Twibell in the box with Khris and Kowboy

and the rest of the “media geeks” who get paid for generating entertaining radio talk shows.

Luke got punked because he couldn’t keep the ball down. I saw it. End of story.

Yeah? From what I hear, you couldn't hit water if you fell out of a f@#%ing boat.

He didn't "want it" as much as they did.

Anybody that listens to the idiots (-Schaum)

on 610 deserves to subject themselves to that kind of moronic analysis.

BOOM! ROASTED!

More and more I hate the A’s, more and more

by MarioVanPeebles Republic of China on May 13, 2009 4:41 PM EDT reply actions

I love the A's

They’re my adopted, second team after the Royals.

A’s fans are diehard. Especially the bleacher guys and gals. They don’t take any lip from anybody, but if they like you, they’ll move the earth to do something nice. They fished a John Buck home run ball off of the top of the scoreboard and gave it to me last year, and let me hang a Shane Costa banner next to their A’s signs on the outfield railing without giving me any grief about it.

When the Royals play the A’s, I’m KC all the way. But when they’re playing anyone else, I cheer for them almost as hard.

Oakland A’s.

Respect, yo’.

The drones said it on the radio this morning

and I saw it on TV last night, and I gave up after Pwntoon came in, (I wasn’t going to stay up so late to witness the complete spanking especially since I’m currently on a string of 40-something consecutive work days without an off day) so I didn’t hear Ouchaver say it last night but what they said that he said, I saw.

He couldn’t keep the ball down.

He couldn’t keep the ball down and the A’s did what they are supposed to do. They punished Luke early and often.

Just like we did in Texas here awhile back, they made him pay for his mistakes.

I can just about guarantee that Mac will make him pay as well.

Just as I’m sold on Seitzer having an effect on plate discipline, and perhaps more so, I am sold on Mac having a dramatic effect on our hurlers’ efficiency. Mac could very well be the ‘Charley Lau’ of pitching coaches.

It’s my opinion that it’s the very reason why it’s not such a drastic gamble GMDM made when picking up Farnsworth. I wanted so bad to call in to Khris and Kowboy yesterday on 610 and rant at them about it. But that is something that I’ve determined is a waste of breath and emotion. I make it a point NOT to call in to shows like that and state anything lucid. They don’t give you the time, and it’s not “good radio”. They have an overwhelming advantage of being able to cut you off and twist your statements entirely out of context and intent, therefore the ability to make you look like a total TOOL.

Imagine the radio guys trying to maintain a sustained intelligent argument with Will, Sweep, Devil_Fingers, NYRoyal, nwroyal, et al .. any of you guys. (sorry if I left anyone out there are lots of you) It’s just not what they are paid to do on their live radio shows. Not that I’m saying they couldn’t because I don’t know that for sure about them personally, but their radio personas wouldn’t stand a chance with the above mentioned group IMHO.

Point being, Bob McClure is a bad mofo pitching coach and GMDM knows it. If Mac don’t think the guy is gonna cut it, he’s gonna be gone. And likewise, the guy is not gonna stay here unless Mac thinks it’s worth it to keep him.

Blind Faith in the McClure Magic? Yeah, you could call it that.

and BTW

I know a ton of guys that like Harleys. There is a common denominator in that mentality and personality. I suspect Mac is of that ilk, and therefore should not be fucked with taken lightly.

when and if..

..our bats wake up they will be fine. Everyone else in the AL Central is starting to hit their collective grooves and string together decent starts imo except for maybe the sox! Our pitching is going to keep us in there, just like everyone has said a million times we are just waiting on our bats. Who else thought last night that Ponson would come out and make it better? I did and wow did he prove me wrong!!
