ugh don't remind me
oh nevermind I saw that was tagged “thing we wish we could block out of our collective memory”
I don't know how to put this but I'm kind of a big deal.
I thought you would appreciate
seeing as how you and I might be the only ones left around here (along with Sweep and a few others) who still have some faith in Avilanche.
I'm not a sabermetrician, but I do play one at Driveline Mechanics.

Appreciated
Good point of reference for those who want to throw Aviles out with yesterday’s trash. I think most of the sentiment is based on the (unrealistic) belief that he was going to just keep repeating 2008’s incredible production.
Guillen’s is particularly ugly considering the stellar defense he was also providing.

i'm still on the aviles train
or still riding The Avilanche, if you will
i think he has two things going against him right now: he’s been unlucky and his swing is a bit off. his luck will regress upward, but whether his swing gets better (or just some more confidence) is a matter for the baseball gods.
My own bad
thinking but I think he played TOO much in the offseason. Playing winter ball then the WBC is just too much. I think he should’ve taken a little time off.
I don't know how to put this but I'm kind of a big deal.
There might be something to that...
or at least to the notion that he’s just putting too much pressure on himself/pressing too hard. Like I’ve said before, I think he’s a very conscientious player and knew that he would have a tougher time with his second MLB tour. I think he figured that playing in both winter league AND the WBC would give him the most experience/opportunities to make sure he was ready to avoid a sophomore slump. Looks like it might have backfired on him.
And so ends today’s armchair sports psychology lecture.

I dunno
Again, I asked if it was time to consider sending him down just for a short stint to get his confidence back. He has the talent- it just looks like it’s between the ears.
If my calculations are correct...
He is currently OPSing .412 for the month of May.
Come on Mikey… snap out of it.

here's players with 70+ PA's for an entire SEASON whose OPS was worse than Avilanche
Morgan Ensberg Yankees 0.506 74 PA
Rob Bowen Athletics 0.504 98 PA
Jacque Jones Tigers 0.498 90 PA
Ben Broussard Rangers 0.493 89 PA
Freddie Bynum Orioles 0.444 121 PA
looks like they give guys about 100 PAs to figure it out. 16 other players in this category had season-long OPS under .600.
Jose Guillen should have been shipped to Omaha to snap out of his funk.

Sophomore Slump
I am willing to attribute Aviles’s horrendous production to the dreaded Sophomore Slump…it is a legitimate phenomenon, and therefore I am willing to be patient with Mike for now. The Sophomore Slump does not apply for Mr. Inconsistent John Buck, who I have been campaigning against for years…
Surely there are some productive offensive free agents out there still looking to play….just one would be just fine with me….
These numbers fail to put it into perspective
Although Gload’s May OPS was a bit low, his OPG (On Base Plus Grit) was higher than any other player in this list at 1.27. That’s pretty good for a Royals player. His grit is evidenced by the fact that he hit a second home run (I’ll still call it the second one because MLB is obviously using the same studios for instant replay that to televise the moon landing) just days after having one taken away by instant replay.
