Game 37 Overflow Thread
1-0 Orioles, could be better, or worse, with Davies's struggles and the multiple Royals GIDPs.
Davies needs a few easy innings, considering the week-long bullpen situation.

I just mean in general, it's a dumb strategy
nothign against Guillen — can’t believe they didn’t ats least try to get to 3-1 on him, but the point is that these situaitons neverr work out — Callaspo isn’t that much worse/better than Guillen to make the IBB worth it statistically.

what is it in that situation,
the next guys OBP needs to be lower than the BA of the guy getting walked? Otherwise the justification goes right out the window.
If you were thinking, you wouldn't have thought that.
even then
it’s really complicated. As a general rule, before the 9th, it’s always stupid. The next hitter has to be significantlly worse than the guy getting walked.
I wouldn’t expect managers do do all the calculations — or at least I don’t expet them to ahve a chart, but I’d say it’s just dumb to do in general early in the game like this, unless it’s like Pujols followed by Skip Schumaker or something

On soft-tossers
here’s a funny Brushback article from a couple years back
Royals Dazzled by Dice-K’s Mysterious ‘Change-Up’
Rightfielder Mark Teahen struck out twice against Matsuzaka and attributed both strike-outs to the mind-boggling Change of Speed pitch.
"That’s a powerful weapon he has right there," said Teahen. "It’s probably going to take a long time for hitters to figure it out. I remember the first time I saw it, I was all geared up for a fastball, then all of a sudden he threw a fastball, but it was a slow kind of fastball. I took a swing at it and it just wasn’t there. I immediately told the umpire to check the ball, but he said it was clean, so I guess that means he’s using some kind of invisible Japanese gunk to make his fastballs go slower."

More BrushBack/Royals "fun"
Royals GM Forced to Pay for Free Agents Out of Own Pocket
"I hope this guy has a lot of money, because he’s going to need it if he wants to go nuts with the free agent signings," said Glass. "If he has his own money and he wants to spend it on some players or whatever, that’s fine. That’s his business. But we’re going to keep the free agent budget exactly the same, which should allow Dayton to continue our strategy of signing role players and making them starters and then freaking out when they don’t win us a pennant."
Moore was surprised to learn he would have to reach into his own pocket to sign the players he wanted. It’s a far cry from his days in Atlanta, where he had every resource at his disposal.
"Well this is going to be a bit different from what I experienced in Atlanta," Moore said. "I had all the money and resources I needed there. Here I’m going to have to use my own money, and I don’t have enough of it. On my salary I can probably only afford second-tier utility players, and they’re all already on the team."
Ah, the bad old days…

we do things weird up here. But we did start in September (3rd i think from memory).
The Allard Baird of incisive internet discourse.
Hell,
I started around August 10, so it’s basically a push.
But I’d much rather have the end of May and early June off than early August. At least with the weather here.
If you were thinking, you wouldn't have thought that.
Thats true
about the weather. We will probably get one more load of snow before the end of the month. It won’t last more than a day, but it will fall thick and fast. August is by far the nicest month we have.

we need another bat
and not Gordon. His OBP was .300 bating 3rd and like .380 batting 7th. We need someone who can perform in the middle of the lineup.
