here's the official language from the rule book:
Saves:
Rule 10.20 in the Official Rule Book states:
Credit a pitcher with a save when he meets all three of the following conditions:
(1) He is the finishing pitcher in a game won by his club; and
(2) He is not the winning pitcher; and
(3) He qualifies under one of the following conditions:
- (a) He enters the game with a lead of no more than three runs and pitches for at least one inning; or
- (b) He enters the game, regardless of the count, with the potential tying run either on base, or at bat, or on deck (that is, the potential tying run is either already on base or is one of the first two batsmen he faces; or
- © He pitches effectively for at least three innings. No more than one save may be credited in each game.

My formula works except in the case where there is 0 outs with people on base
So I never knew any different til I actually heard an announcer mention the real rule one day
0 runners on + 3 outs to go = 3 run save situation
3 runners on + 3 outs to go = 6 run save situation
That was always how I thought it worked until I heard something about the on deck rule one day. That seems silly. You could come into a 2 run game with 1 out to go and get a save.

so i never questioned it when i got older, just assumed it was right

I honestly feel like you would deserve a save for the bases loaded no outs scenario, and that you shouldn’t get one for getting the last out with no one on.
The save rule is kinda silly anyways. Do away with it and bring back firemen!
