Maybe the Most Important 6 games of the season
Prior to the season all the experts had the AL Central as one of if not THE most winable division in the league. Well a month in a half into the season that was still hard to argue but as the month has come to a close the Detroit Tigers look like they have an opportunity to grab hold of the division by the short and curlies. While all the other teams in the Central play opponents from the NL Central the Tigers play the Colorado Rockies, losers of 6 of 8 and last place in the NL West. The Royals, Twins and Indians all play NL Central "local" teams with winning records.
The Tiggers are hot, six wins in a row, five quality starts in their last six games and with the D-Train tossing out a good performance possibly the makings of the strongest rotation in the division to go along with a solid offense. While Detroit has been hot KC has been reeling with some bad bp outings, shaky defense and questionable offense at best. These next six games could be the maker or breakers of the season if KC wants to contend in this division.
Pitching Matchups Detroit v Colorado
Rick Porcello 4-3 4.95 FIP vs Ubaldo Jimenez 3-4 3.51 FIP neither pitcher has given up more than 1 ER in last 3 starts.
Jason Marquis 5-3 4.56 FIP vs Armando Galaragga 3-3 5.62 FIP Galarraga has really stuggled with BB's this season giving up nearly 5 per 9ip.
Dontrelle Willis 1-0 4 ER 11 Ip vs Jason Hammel 0-3 4.53 FIP The D-Train looked pretty solid against Texas. If he or Bonderman turn in a solid season that could spell ruin for the other AL Central teams.
Colorado is 9-6 all time versus the Tigers unfortunately 3 of the losses came to last years Tigers that and past records are meaningless.
Detroit Matchups
Justin Verlander vs Gil Meche
Edwin Jackson vs Zack Greinke
Rick Porcello vs Kyle Davies
Detroit has built a 3 game advantage in the division and faces the worst NL record of the five AL Central teams this weekend. They have an opportunity to break away from the pack while KC has an opportunity to reel them back in. KC with a 6-3 record these last 9 games also has an opportunity to put back to back winning record months together since I don't know when.

Agreed that these next 6 games are big
with the final 3 being the biggest, obviously. No matter what happens this weekend, winning the series vs. Detroit would be huge.

Tigers fan here.
The unbalanced interleague schedules are admittedly pretty retarded. I have no idea why the Tigers have played the Rockies in 7 of the past 8 seasons, and this year it gives us a small advantage.
That said, we come to KC in the following series, which is shaping up to be a huge one.
Good luck and go AL Central.

Everyone knows
The Tigers and Rockies are traditional rivals dating back to the days of Ty Cobb and Hank Greenburg.

Ah yes
The I-80-to-I-76 series is second only to Sawx-Yanks in its tradition and intensity.

Also would like to debate with the title
I would say they are the 6 most important games pre All Star break. But, being that it is here, they are the most important games now.

Great pitching matchups for those first 2 games of the Detroit series
Would hope the Royals could draw more than the pathetic 23k for Greinke yesterday. Seriously – 25k for a lousy T-shirt giveaway on Tuesday, and only 23k to see what arguably might be one of the premier pitching seasons of this generation?
Only mitigating factor is that the Glass ownership years have driven the fanbase down so far, that NOTHING short of making the playoffs will turn up the fan interest to where it should be. (and that, of course, won’t impact the attendance until the next season).
By the way, Royals season ticket base is now down to 8,500 from last year’s 9,200 figure. I would try to find out what it was in the 70s and 80s, but I ate a large lunch and would prefer not having to clean my monitor.

years of nelgigence are part of it
i’m guessing the economic climate doesn’t help, either
hard to get on the fans for those reasons

In the fans defense
It is hard to get away for Day Games. It is really hard to get away for day games 4 days before a paid Holiday. It is harder to get away for day games when your stadium isn’t a walk from the office (i.e. downtown).
25K is totally acceptable given the bad timing
BOOM! ROASTED!

Is 23k for a Thursday afternoon game
really that bad? I actually thought that was a pretty good crowd. Lots of people do work, especially before a holiday weekend.

+1
I thought that was a pretty good crowd indeed. I’ve seen Minnesota and Cleveland and even the White Sox draw 10-15,000 for weekday day games.

I bought seven tickets for the Memorial Day game
so I did my part on Monday.
I don't know how to put this but I'm kind of a big deal.

To clarify
Yes, 23k was a good crowd for a Thursday afternoon – but I honestly expected a bigger Greinke “bump” than that.
By the way, when comparing weekday night games vs day games, at least prior to school being out, I would bet they are attended about equally.
I think the point I was trying to make was that Wednesday night, with no giveaways, drew 19k, so the t-shirt giveaway sorta brought in an extra 6k, while Greinke pitching brought in only about 4k extra.
Let’s agree to follow this phenomenom as the season goes on. I’m not saying there isn’t a Greinke bump – just that it is arguably WAY too small, IMHO.
There is at least a chance that we are witnessing something truly historic this season – I would think people would be falling all over themselves to see him pitch. Perhaps that will happen if we reach the All Star Break and his ERA is still lower than, say 1.25?

look back to 2003 when the R's were contending...
they were drawing 12K in day games in May. I’d call it a 10K ‘greinke bump’.

not sure if this is comparable,
but I remember a Saberhagen vs Ryan weekday day game selling out with the majority of the tickets sold as walkups. Granted, this had the appeal of a “passing the torch” game at the time, etc. – but neither Saberhagen or Ryan EVER posted a season as impressive as Greinke is on pace to post this year.

Gotta remember though
When Sabes was here, the Royals had ONE weekday day game all year, and promoted it as a special day. Now it seems we have one every homestand and most don’t draw that well.

Saberhagen never pitfched for an organization
that, until 2-3 years ago, had been possibly the worst in baseball for years at all levels.
And while Nolan Ryan is one of them ore overrated players ever, I feel comfortable saying that Carl Pavano is no Nolan Ryan

nolan ryan overrated?
He was better over the longest period of time and most innings/pitches of any pitcher ever. Of course, part of it was that he was a genetic freak, but he’s a perennial all-star in any generation.

Our attendance is actually looking pretty strong, considering our market
We have drawn more fans per game than the Indians, Reds, A’s, Marlins, Pirates and Nats and we’re right behind the O’s. We’re averaging 21,695 a game, which would be our highest since 2003, and our second highest since 1994.

I'd say they're the most important so far...
but if we lose all 6, then win the next 8, they won’t seem so important. I hate giving too much importance to April/May games. We’re 9-10 this month. If we put up a .500 May, we’re in good shape, but even if we’re a game or two under, we aren’t done. If we’re 9-19, then we’re probably done.

StL will sweep the Royals
and so will Detroit. Greinke will throw a perfect game for 9 innings, and we won’t score a run, allowing him to lose in extras and demand a trade the following day.
You may think I’m overreacting, but I don’t see any way the Royals can score anything right now. And their defense puts them in a 1-0 hole to start every game almost, especially with Guillen in right.

at what point
does it stop being early and start being a cause for concern? i mean this team has been playing poorly for a while. it seems like something different lets us down every night, whether it’s a crappy start, poor relief, bad baserunning, subpar defense, or bad managerial moves. every night it’s something different.
I hereby resign from this post.
