Rany weighs in on the recent moves
"More to the point, I don’t see how sending him to Omaha helps any, as he’s already proven he can pitch down there. He’s likely to learn more pitching out of the bullpen than he would in Triple-A."
Sounds familiar. Although, the 4 man rotation for the next few weeks is somewhat of a safe cover. Why not use him in the pen though?

Why one might not want to use him in the major league pen:
While Rany makes a good point, there is also the counter argument (which I think is at least as persuasive) that starting pitchers need to keep starting somewhere. When you pitch in relief, you usually use only your best two pitches. When you start, you have to use your entire pitch complement. I think that practice using all of his pitches, and dealing with having to face batters multiple times in the same game is useful. And if they plan to put him right back into the KC rotation the next time they need a fifth starter, I can see why they’d want to keep him on a starter’s schedule, rather than the inconsistent pitching schedule of a reliever.

NY, great point
But I still think the Rany/Warden argument of “He’s got nothing left to prove in AAA,” is simply short sided.
Having nothing left to prove does not equal ready to help the ML team win games. If this move wasn’t a simple move to get a bullpen arm up for 2 weeks it would still make sense to send down a player that wasn’t performing at the MLB level, even if he had dominated the level below if the MLB team was not in a position to raise the white flag of defeat every 5th day while he ‘figured something out’ at the MLB level since they are seemingly in a close division race.
BOOM! ROASTED!

Yeah, the “he’s got nothing left to prove in AAA” argument is a bit of a cliche. Sending a young, inexperienced player like him down isn’t about “proving” anything. It’s about continued development. And he’s clearly got some developing left to do. The only question is where is the best place for his development right now (especially in the short-term period where the Royals don’t need a fifth starter). I think a good case can be made for both the AAA rotation and the MLB bullpen. I don’t think that either is the clear best choice, nor is there a clear mistake.

Also,
it seems that part of the original decision to send him to Omaha out of ST was because he needed to work on his stamina and focus deeper into the game. Being a starter somewhere serves that purpose better than being a reliever at the MLB level.
