Just a note
I’m of course not saying all soccer fans are crazy, or that the sport of soccer leads to violence all the time. Every professional competitive sport ever created has probably experienced something similar to this. Still, it at least seems like it happens a lot with soccer. This is just a really sick thing to do over one game, and it angers me to see something of this nature happen. I feel sorry for good, normal soccer fans, and sports fans in general, who must deal with this sort of thing.

It's ok to say it--they're crazy.
Fans are constantly getting killed at soccer matches- either by crazy fans after the match or during the match when they get trampled, smashed against the fence around the pitch, etc. I know I’m supposed to believe that Europeans are so much smarter and more civilized than we are, but they love killing each other over soccer games. Plus all sorts of racist stuff goes on at soccer games over there. Weird.
How could anyone possibly take a soccer game so seriously. I like watching a grown man pretend to get injured and roll around on the ground screaming like a baby as much as the next guy, but come on. I probably wouldn’t kill someone over it.

You know, this will sound awful
But i think it is that in Europe, Soccer is very much the working class game. And it is that demographic that tends to have extreme politics (racism) or social problems in communities (violence) at higher rates than others. Contrast that to the states and here in Canada, where soccer is a very middle class pursuit for the most part.
Again, at the risk of sounding judgmental and just a general prick, I guess the North American equivalent would be something like Nascar. People go and get drunk and shout a lot.
I've had it explained to me
That a lot of teams represent long-time class warfare or religious struggles. Like the Rangers/Celtics rivalry represents the Protestant/Catholic battles that have raged for centuries. Our teams simply represent some geographical area we happen to support. So Europeans tend to take it much more personally than we do.

Right
which is why the most dangerous, violent matchup in the world is in the NFL: Dallas-Washington

KC is a testament to fans of many sports can live together in harmony
especially college sports if you are a fan of Big 12 schools, but also with so many pro sports in the state of missouri…..it makes you feel kinda good.
Of course we all know what the glue is to hold all of these people together….BBQ.
Europe needs more BBQ, maybe then they wouldn’t kill themselves over soccer games, they would just get the -itis and have another rack of ribs.
