MLB 2k9: Recreating the 2003/04 Kansas City Royals

On the heels of my purchase of MLB 2k9 for the XBOX 360, I have been racking my brain, trying to find ways to squeeze this game like a sponge full of enjoyment juice.

Okay, similes have never been my strong suit.

One idea I had (as I alluded to in the Royals gameday thread earlier) was to create a team comprised entirely of 2003/2004 Royals players. You might ask, why would anyone choose to revisit one of the most horrifying, depressing times to be a Royals fan? Well, you might also ask why would one spend $59.99 for a baseball game with a 6.8 rating on IGN. The answer is clear: I'M CRAZY! And a glutton for punishment.

(Aren't those requirements for being a Royals fan?)

This FanPost will serve as a Season One update thread. Through trades and free agent signings, I have been able to essencially recreate a team from those two years. You'd be surprised at how many ex-Royals are now free agent road kill!

Without further adu, YOUR 2009 KANSAS CITY ROYALS!

2B Jose Bautista (it literally took me 45 minutes to find a 2B from these years who is still active and in 2k9. I'm really stretching here).

3B Mark Teahen

(BENCH: John Buck, Billy Butler [stretching it, I know...] Paul Phillips and Tony Graffanino, who I had to edit into the game from the filler 2B Cleveland had)

I realize having Buck, Teahen AND Beltran is kind of like having your cake and eating it too, but dammit, it was hard enough finding people from this era still in the majors. I will be updating this with a comment soon about the first game of the season.

PLAY BALL! (I really have way too much free time on my hands...)

I'm in midst of an epic pennent race with the Indians in The Show 09..

we are both 10 games over five hundred with 15 games to go. Epic. Greinke has a 2.07 ERA, and Gordon’s up to 21 HR’s.. Good time. In reality, the game is very difficult. its been a struggle to keep up with the powerful indians.

Not a good season opener

ChiSox 9, Royals 1

Runelvys 7.0 IP, 10 H, 9 R, 8 ER, 3 SO, 3 HR, 10.29 ERA
S. Camp 1.0 IP 0 H, 0 R, 1 SO, 0.00 ERA

Berroa 1-4
Beltran 0-4
Sweeney 0-4
Stairs 0-3
Bautista 0-3
DeJesus 2-3 1 R
Ibanez 0-3
Teahen 1-3 1 RBI
DiFelice 0-3

I’m still trying to get the hang of this game. I have NO IDEA how to hit for power, everything I get is just singles. MB had a complete game. Its like he wasn’t throwing balls, every pitch I took was a strike. Bah.

I will just save space and say I lost Game 2 to the White Sox 7-4

Game 3
Royals(1-2) 7, ChiSox(2-1) 3

D.J. Carrasco: 3.2 IP (injury) 4H 0R 0ER 1BB 3K 0.00 ERA
S. Camp (W): 1.2IP 1H 0R 0ER 2BB 3SO 0.00 ERA
Affeldt: 1.1IP 3H 2R 2ER 0BB 1K 13.50 ERA
D. Reyes: 1.1IP 1H 1R 1ER 0BB 0K 1HR 6.75ERA
Mike “The Ninth” MacDougal 1.0IP 1H 0R 0ER 0BB 1K 0.00 ERA

Berroa 2-5 1R 1RBI
Beltran 3-5 2R 4RBI 2HR
Sweeney 0-4
Stairs 1-4 1R
Ibanez 2-4
Buck 1-4 1RBI
Teahen 1-4 1R
DeJesus 1-4 1R
Bautista 2-3 1R 1RBI

I finally got some pitches to hit thanks to Gavin Floyd. Beltran goes yard twice and Mac the Ninth shuts the door in a non-save situation. DJ Carrasco’s condition wasn’t very good and he got injured pitching in the fourth inning. Shawn Camp has been my best reliever so far, but everyone else has been pretty uninspiring.

Next, the NEW YORK YANKEES come to the New K to face Jamie Wright, Kyle Snyder and back to Elvys.

YANKEES SERIES

Signed Ryan Bukvich (and was actually excited that I found someone from that era who was still in the game). He may start if DJ Carrasco can’t go vs. Indians
