We're a month into the season and the Royals are off to a good start for once. Gordon is on the DL, Bloomquist is hitting and Greinke is on the road to the Cy Young Award. Most of us probably feel pretty good, but with more than a little wariness about what the next month and the rest of the season will bring. Will the pitching cool down when the weather heats up? Will the hitting turn around? Has it already turned around? Lots of questions. But how do you feel?
The RCI for April (preseason) was 6.34. Has the mood of the fanbase changed? Let's see.
I want to remind everyone that my intent with the "How do you feel about the 2009..." questions is not merely to gauge your feeling on what has happened so far in the season, but how do you feel about the item in question for the 2009 season overall. Obviously what has happened in the games already played affects our feeling about the entire season, but I don't think it should just be about what has happened so far. Anyway, they are my questions, but you can answer them however you want.
I'm also making some additions to the regular lineup of questions. I'm something of a political junky, and I often find myself checking job approval and right track/wrong track polls. So I thought it would be interesting to see how those kinds of polling questions would work for the Royals. They don't affect the calculation of the RCI and some of them are redundant with the regular RCI questions, but I think they are worth a try.
Here's the deal. For each of these questions, give me a number from 1-10. 1 means you feel very bad/unhappy/negative about the item in question right now. 10 means you feel extremely good/happy/positive about it. (If you want to use decimals like 6.3, feel free).

Nobody knows what the magic date is for an extra year of team control
There’s been a lot of speculation, but all we can do is speculate and estimate. Unfortunately KC sports radio hasn’t helped because at least two different radio sources have definitively stated two different dates when there is no definitive date. But mid-May is likely about right.

I may have some dates wrong but this question touches a nerve with me. This is my biggest peeve with what the organization is doing. Period. It’s my opinion that Gil should have been on the DL to get his back fixed.
It all depends on Meche’s back stiffness which I would have brought Luke up to cover for (but it may well have been a mistake on my part).
Right now I would bring Luke up for the West Coast trip and put him in Gil’s spot starting vs. the Angels on Friday May 8 and leave Gil home on the 15-day retroactive to May 5.
That way we might be able to get some fix on Gil, Luke would get to face some of the apparently weaker teams in the league at the moment (W-L basis only) and
Gil could come back in vs. Cleveland on the 20th.
It would also give us some time to figure out who is gonna get shit-canned out of the pen to make room for either Luke to stay or not. Sir Sidney hasn’t done anything yet to make me want to fire him. But it would definitely buy me some time — and I still think they are bullshitting about the club control and free agency clock.
So they probably won’t do what I would, and they’ve already proven that by not doing the same move I just described back when the went ahead and took Gil to Cleveland to pitch on April 23 after he was hurting in Texas the previous Friday, April 17. That was a game that had they done what I would have, maybe we don’t lose it, I don’t know. Start Hochevar vs. Cleveland on the road in crappy weather instead of Mesche who’s back is hurting?

(I’m being half ‘smartass’ on this one, I know what you mean … but I had to just throw that one in there) I think they’ve got a 50% chance right now. (smartass again 50-50 they either make it or they don’t) but put me down officially as 60% and let that answer the intent of the question.
J. What is your best estimate of how many games the Royals will win in 2009? 86. That’s my final answer.
I hope this has injected a little bit of entertainment value into what must be a very very tedious job of number crunching.

So you'd put him on the DL and have him miss three starts?
No way. Even if he actually did have tightness in his back again (which I don’t think he had because I think he’d be honest about it – he was honest about it last time), I’d have him skip a start and see if a week off helped. There’s no way I’d give up three Meche starts so easily.

i thought i was just missing him for 2 starts against
the angels and the O’s. (this time) I didn’t see him starting again till Friday vs. the Angels, and I wasn’t going to make the move until then and call it retro “back to” tomorrow so he could make his start on the 20th (unless I just totally don’t know what I’m talking about) Of course if I believed there was nothing wrong with Gil’s back then the entire point is probably moot.
I just don’t believe there’s nothing wrong there.
Maybe it’s the fact that I thought Gil was going to be doing better than he is, and Zack was not going to be doing as well as he is. Actually I thought Mesche would be putting up better numbers than Zack (but still about even). And my preconceptions have my outlook a little jeaded because Zack is basically kicking Gil’s ass. And everyone else in the league.
I can’t wait to watch him again tonight.

I think last year he had some amazing unreal numbers offensively for AL leadoff hitter. I think he still would, but not be a better leadoff hitter than CoCo. I don’t know how much better numbers he’d be putting up hitting in the leadoff spot somewhere else.
So, yeah it’s the real non-leadoff hitting DDJ.

What I see there
What I see from those numbers is that DDJ is performing very differently from the vast majority of the rest of his career. His current numbers are wildly out of line with both his career numbers and his 2009 projections. Basically if these numbers were close to “for real” then his career has suddenly fallen off a cliff. That would surprise me greatly.

And I don’t think it is uncommon for even good hitters to have a .623 OPS month or two over the course of a season.

I thought the numbers thing on the players was confusing
Basically I think…
Aviles is better than hes showing
bloom is worse
Callaspo is worse, but only slightly
Buck won’t hit for this many extra bases as the year goes along, he’s a fader
zach obviously won’t have another 50 inning stretch and give up what 2 runs, but he’s still going to win the cy young
Bannister is fine, he does what he does and is a good back end guy
Wright- I’ve become a big wright fan and damnit hes a good guy out of the bullpen. I think Wright, Cruz and Soria are all pretty good and for that reason instead of trying to keep them available every day I wish that we would “stretch” one of them daily.
HOCH NOW! PONSON OMAHA NOW!! I don’t really dislike Ponson he’s been slightly below average which is fine, but I think Hoch can be slightly above average. If Hoch/Bannister pitch as number 3 guys we would have a rotation of basically 1,1,3,3,3. That would be the only thing that could carry us to the playoffs.
And my god does Hillman piss me off when he doesn’t bring Soria in during the 9th when its tied.
