Around SBN: Jeff Sullivan's MLB Trade Deadline Primer

"After last night's dramatic victory, the Royals are sitting in first place in the standings with a 16-11 record. More to the point, they rank eighth in the league in home runs (which is great, for them) and fifth in walks (which is incredible). Oh, and the Beane Count? At this moment,
Billy Beane's Athletics are last in the league, and Dayton Moore's Royals are first.

I never thought I would have occasion to write those words."

The bandwagon welcomes a reluctant, half-hearted supporter

Neyer should be consistent and say that the results really don’t matter because the team was put together through a flawed process.

I don't think he'd criticize the process per se

I think he’d note that he was strongly against the Guillen and Farnsworth signings from the start, was solidly against the Jacobs trade and the Meche and Bloomquist signings, I believe he was neutral towards the Crisp trade, and he probably liked the Cruz signing. He’s been dead-on about Farnsworth, and so far, the Crisp, Jacobs, Meche, and Bloomquist acquisitions look better than expected. (Jacobs looks better not because he’s necessarily out-performing expectations, although he may be slightly, but because he’s being benched against tough lefties and other players are actually getting on base which makes his slugging more valuable.) I think all of his acquisition opinions were pretty reasonable at the time, and I think it’s also pretty reasonable to begin reevaluating some of those opinions, especially with regard to Crisp who looks likely to dwarf his career walk rate this year (and the Meche opinion should have been reevaluated long ago of course). The team was expected to win 75-80 games this year, and so far, the team is legitimately playing like an 85-90 win team. I think it’s more than fair for an analyst to continue to update their analysis based on new information. But yes, for those who saw this coming, it’s also fair to point out that the previous predictions look more likely to be wrong at this point.

Sometimes win-now strategies fail

So far, this one is looking like an epic fail.

THAN HE SHOULD GET GOING!!

I have no problem with Neyer

good or bad, Rob has always been willing to write Royals pieces in a national media outlet.

He’s absolutely right about what Frank and Ryan said.

Anyone else think that Frank White is the best color commentator in the biz right now?

I've got crazy flipper fingers!

haven't heard any others

but I do like Frank White. He provides great insight from a former player. Some might not like his old-school mentality because but he is, in fact, old school. You can tell he really knows a lot about the game, though, and I think compliments Ryan well.

Frank is the best.

He is amazing. Loves the game. Loves the players. Loves his job. And has fun with the best analysis I’ve heard.

KC ATA cut funding to the Royals Express

So it appears Neyer will have to wait at the bus stop for awhile.

I think he needs to hitchhike as penance

It will give him some time to think about what he has become.

Neyer is probably the most famous person

I actually know. During our freshman year at KU (84-85) we both lived in the same dorm, Hashinger, and sometimes hung out together. I remember going to see this Jean-Luc Godard movie down at the Union with him once. He was a nice guy, kind of shy. He’s got a speech defect, sort of a lisp.

We both made the mistake of signing up for a military science course called “Strategy, Tactics, and Wargaming,” which sounded pretty cool but was just a load of wank, some kind of recycled Army course for career second lieutenants that was supposed to make us want to sign up for ROTC.

Neyer probably doesn’t remember me – he’s just one of the hundreds of people who have passed through my life, and I’m one of the thousands who have passed through his.

It's pronounced Poo-ZHOLS in Catalan.
