Dan Gutierrez sent to bed without any supper by the Royals
In Greg Schaum's post-game show on 610, he reported the following story which is disjointed and full of holes due to the fact that I don't think anyone, including Schaum knows even half of what is going on here:
In spring training, Royals pitching prospect Dan Gutierrez roomed with Scott Boras clients Mike Moustakas and Eric Hosmer. Sometime this spring Gutierrez switched agents and became a Boras client. Also this spring, Gutierrez has been rehabbing from some sort of non-major injury (which is why he's been in extended spring training and not assigned to a minor league team). Apparently some conflict arose recently between the Boras/Gutierrez camp and the Royals about who Gutierrez should be working out and rehabbing with. Boras/Gutierrez wants it to be their guy and the Royals want it to be their guy. The conflict has gotten heated enough that the Royals have "sent Gutierrez home for personal reasons."
End of story. We have no more details at this time. Check comments for more information as it becomes available.

Cozy up to Greg Schaum and see what you can get

yeah, there is that kind of stuff...
the patently obvious stuff gets written about in the notes section—but things like this or didn’t they used to do a once a week write-up on some of the prospects?

That'd be really nice. A weekly writeup.
I personally don’t think they will write anything, unless it gets worse, or its worse than it seems.

I’m not real sure what to think…other than how great it is to have one more Boras client in the fold…maybe Gutierrez, Hosmer, and Moose will all hit free agency the same year..wouldn’t that be great

Except that he'll be on the restricted list and won't be allowed to pitch probably until he apologizes and behaves
And missing most of another season on the restricted list (like 2007) isn’t the way that you develop into the kind of pitcher that gets a good payday.

And he’s going to have to come back to the organization hat in hand to ask them pretty please if he can play, and promise to do what he’s told like a good boy. He needs to understand that until his pre-FA service time is up, he’s a slave to his organization. They own him lock, stock and pitching arm. He has absolutely no leverage.

Schaum and Gutierrez
I think what Schaum said is to just let you be aware of what is going on…it is my understanding that he also said that Gutierrez is not working out with Tom House who is the preferred Boras pitching coach. Simply, the story here is that the Royals hard line is that Gutierrez is gone due to personal issues (which is scary if that is the only thing you know because of his prior issues) I think it was important for Schaum to also tell the Gutierrez side of the story….which is exactly what Minda has now shown in this forum.
The fact is that the Boras corp is the agency that most every young player in the game wants to be with…they protect their guys and I don’t think it is fair for the fans to be mad at a kid that was a 33rd round draft pick that is now lucky enough to be a Boras client just 3 years later….

Huh?
I don’t think it is fair for the fans to be mad at a kid that was a 33rd round draft pick that is now lucky enough to be a Boras client just 3 years later…
I don’t get this at all. He’s an employee and part of his job is to rehab from injuries with his boss’s people. He’s supposed to be working out with his employer’s trainers and pitching with his employer’s pitching coaches. Right now that is supposed to be his day-to-day “work.” He’s basically told his boss “no, I’m going to do what I want.” Now, are we not supposed to be “mad at the kid” even though he’s done this because he’s become a good enough prospect to become a Boras client? Congrats, Danny. Now shut up and do your fucking job.

I was a pitcher. I had an injury.
Did I tell my coach/organization send me home before I’ll work with your guys? I want my own guys. By the way, you have to pay for it…. But I’ll do what I want. You don’t own me!? Scott owns my soul. I do what Scott tells me.
No I didn’t! I did my work with their trainers and their coaches! And I got over it and didn’t create any problems for the rest of my team.
Get your team above your individual needs. If this is what Danny is turning into…. well, let’s just say we’ve got enough JoGui’s on the team.

understood
I will say though that this kid is doing what he and many others think is right…the Boras group is his family now…He is not making the decisions they are…I understand being mad at the “system” but Danny is just trying to do what he thinks is best for his future…..Like I said, just a few seasons ago he is a late draft pick and now he is one of the better pitching prospects in the game…I am sure this is a whirlwind for him
now…NY I think when you say there are holes in the story…who else is even going to bother bringing an issue like this to the fans (are you even at all happy that someone cares about the system and consistently promotes the minor leaguers through the off season baseball this week show or with the popular diamond in the rough segment at the end of every post game)….if you are going to tell your fan base there are holes…than please post the entire story (dialogue from the broadcast) so others can make that assumption…you are (because of your position here) misleading in making a personal post that has a lot of holes in it…opinions should be for the thread not the lead post…

I don't care if he thinks he's doing what is best for him
He gets paid to do a job. And that job entails rehabbing when, where and with whom his employer tells him to rehab. And it is his job to say, “yes, sir” and do as he’s told. When he becomes a FA, he’ll have leverage. Until then, he has nothing. He’s just a small piece of a large organization. He’s a good prospect with a lot of question marks. If he thinks the Boras corp. is his family, then he needs to think about how his family is going to get him through the minors and into the majors. His “family” cant do that. The organization that owns his rights is the only entity that can do that. So he’s going to have to apologize to his boss and do as he’s told. It’s time for Danny to grow up. Actually it was time for him to grow up two years ago when he got suspended for most of the season. Now he’s overdue.
And with regard to Schaum, I wasn’t criticizing him for having holes in the story. I tried to make that clear when I said, “he reported the following story which is disjointed and full of holes due to the fact that I don’t think anyone, including Schaum
knows even half of what is going on here.” Schaum doesn’t have the full story. That’s fine. It’s a new story and people probably aren’t giving out a lot of info. So Schaum reported what he knew and didn’t pretend to know more than he knew. Schaum did a good reporting job here.

The industry has a standard
And that is that in professional sports, the employer pays all medical bills and the employer picks the doctors, physical therapists, instructors and coaches. That’s the deal. That’s the deal for everyone (with the possible exception of some superstars). But Danny doesn’t think the rules apply to him. Even though he’s an A-ball prospect, he thinks he should get to call the shots for his employer. See the problem there?

A few things
First, I don’t know what his contract or the NFL’s collective bargaining agreement says. Second, I do know that either player contracts or the MLB CBA say that doctor choice is up to the teams. This has come up before and has been well documented at BP as well as many other sources. It’s the team’s choice, period. Third, as I said, I’m sure superstars get lots of concessions from their teams. While it is the team’s choice, they can give in to a player if they want. Superstars have some power and leverage. Pretty good A-ball prospects have no power and no leverage. They are supposed to do what they are told. 99% of them do.
The immoderate moderator

Of course not
First, this isn’t about his doctor. It is about who he is working out with. Second, of course he can’t pick his doctor. With few exceptions, major and minor leaguers don’t get to pick their doctors. That’s part of the deal. That’s part of their contracts. The team pays and the team chooses. This isn’t like the insurance you have with your employer. Professional sports are different. But Danny thinks he’s special and rules don’t apply to him.

This is rehab
to get in a pissing match over who you are working with is wrong. He is moving his time table back and creating a riff with management. If you want to succeed in anything whether it is sports, business or anything sometimes you have to put on the good face and just go along with things. If this is his battle that he is choosing than he better be right about it being worth it otherwise he is just slowing his career down and better be prepared to continue to get it slowed down later, right or wrong.
I don't know how to put this but I'm kind of a big deal.

perhaps he thinks
the KC doctors are giving him bad advice that could jeopardize his arm long term.
I don’t know anymore than any of you. I think it’s pretty silly that he’s doing this, but maybe there’s more to it.

From the information we have so far, this has nothing to do with doctors
The story, as reported, is that the conflict is over who Gutierrez is working with while rehabbing. We’re talking about a pitching coach/instructor who helps him throw and get his arm back to full strength. Regardless, neither doctor, physical therapist, or coach is his decision. There is a power relationship. The Royals organization is the boss and he is the employee. And in professional sports, rehabbing from an injury is part of your job. The employer dictates how that is done and the employee goes along. Or, of course, he has the option of quitting the sport and selling insurance for a living. It’s his choice.

Or even better...
he could start his own baseball team that started stealing players from MLB, and then Bud Selig would buy the team and he could get his old A ball job back.

Much ado about nothing.
I bet everyone’s forgotten that Carlos Beltran got into it with the organization over the same thing.
The team won that one in the end, too. (And if the reports about how Beltran was actually willing to talk contract rather than go to free agency, go directly to free agency, do not pass hometown… then didn’t hurt the relationship when contract time came up, either.)
