ok, ok
I think we’ve all made the point about the “national innocence” thing. I agree that it is over-hyped, but I’d still rather not see most PEDs in the game, and I’m glad they’re suspending people for it.

Sure
I just grow pretty tired of it. The NFL suspends guys all the time and no one bats an eye. MLB suspends someone and its a huge deal. Maybe rightfully so, but I’m tired of it.

I beg to differ
When Shawne Merriman was suspended it was a really big deal. I really depends upon the caliber of the player. A good number of minor NFL players get suspended and it isn’t that big of a deal. But whenever it is a big time player, in either sport, people take notice. Baseball’s problem is that almost every star of the last decade . . . well, you know what I mean.
by Chyladin on May 7, 2009 1:31 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Eh, I don't think they made that big of a deal
When Merriman tested positive, the media blew up for about a day. The next day, it was all about how he’d be back in four days and everything would be fine. He still appeared in commercials, the defense improved when he got back. No one cared.

God, I would hope so
As ridiculous as some parts of the CBA are, one would think that logic alone would dictate that if you can’t play due to your own violation of a league-instituted policy, you damn sure better not be getting paid for it.

does the league actually release it, or do we have to take Boras’ word for it?

Depending on how Boras wants to use the PED Playbook
I would guess “tainted supplement.” Although given that it’s Manny, he might try to come up with something that’s really off the wall. Like Manny diagnosed himself as a diabetic after reading WebMD, so he got some insulin, and he needed help to inject it, so he went over to his “cousin’s” house, and his “cousin” was a steroid user, and in the confusion of preparing the syringe of insulin, it got mixed up with one that held his “cousin’s” next stanozolol shot.

Not to stomp all over our well-deserved schadenfreude
…but I think maybe this really was a legitimate mistake. Between the tone of Manny’s statement (“under our rules, it’s my responsibility”) and the fact that he — a Boras client, mind you, and thus someone you’d expect to pursue every possible angle — is explicitly not intending to try and appeal the suspension…
I dunno. Honestly? I suspect it’s an amphetamine hit, and his doctor prescribed him some form of ADD medication which he thought didn’t contain any speed. I could be wrong, but it just smells that way to me.

If that (ADD diagnosis and treatment) were the case, you'd think...
that Manny would have already gotten a Therpeutic Use Exemption from MLB. I don’t see why not, they’re apparently handing them out like candy.

Well, he went to a personal doctor outside the league
If it were such a thing, he could have been embarrassed about it and thus went to a personal doctor. If he had just gone through the team doctor, it would have been avoided.

Yeah, but wouldn't Boras have been involved?
I thought Boras controlled pretty much every aspect of his clients’ lives. The parts that could have an effect on the professional side of things anyway. I mean, if you’re an agent (in any sport), don’t you basically sit your clients down on day one and tell them that if they see any doctors or are even thinking about ingesting any drugs or supplements, to make sure they check with you first?

I dunno
Manny’s still a good player (and a great hitter), but even if he’s a 4 WAR player and he gets replaced with a replacement level scrub, we’re talking about less than two wins, and closer to one win it’s going to cost them.

Sexual enhancement drug
I read on Yahoo! that it was a sexual enhancement drug that is banned by baseball that Manny tested positive for twice- once in spring training and once recently.
Really? No, not really.

Apparently hCG
Human Chorionic Gonadotropin. If given in a pulsatile fashion it causes the release of luteinizing hormone which stimulates the testis to produce and release testosterone. Its normally released for other reasons when a woman becomes pregnant but can be used to stimulate testosterone release in males.
PS. No one probably cares, this was more for me, I am studying for my endocrinology test right now and I need to justify paying attention to baseball.

There is really only 3 reasons a male would ever be using this.
1) Hypogonadism: It CAN be used for this, though there are better alternatives. Also, this is a lifelong condition that requires a pump much like is used for insulin dependent diabetics.
2) Infertility: Again, it CAN be used for this, but there are better alternatives.
3) Recover from a long or intense cycle of exogenous testosterone or anabolic steroid injections that results in testicular atrophy. This jump starts endogenous testosterone production which reverses testicular atrophy and has the added benefit of resulting in a “normal” testosterone profile in only a few days to weeks (they test for lots of testosterone products, an abnormal profile indicates exogenous testosterone administration).
As a side note for the curious: hCG is undetectable in urine about 4 days after last administration.
hCG is also what is detected for home pregnancy tests. Perhaps manny is just preggers?
by ddw on May 7, 2009 8:24 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs

4:1 before and that set off the red flags.
