2009 Draft day 2 Open Thread
I'm going to be out most of the day but here is an open thread to discuss all the future All-Stars the Royals will take today. One name we might take in Round 4 is Jacob Stewart--CF from CO--I've mentioned him earlier but the Royals have had last night and this morning to see if someone like him is signable.
Here is Baseball America's best availible for day 2.

I was thinking about this...
Are ther rules in place to prevent teams from contacing non-drafted players during the draft?
Only having 3 rounds on day 1 sure does leave a lot of time for calls to players/agents asking what it will take to sign them…

Actually it is spelled
Geoffrey Baldwin. He’s a commit to Nebraska, but worked out for at least 20 teams before the draft.
Billed by one scouting service as a good athlete but a slow runner who is stuck at 1B. Strong arm, potential plus defense, big frame at 6’4" with room to grow:
"Baldwin put himself onto the prospect map last summer when he blasted two long home runs during batting practice at Coors Field as part of the Area Code Games tryout process. When I saw Baldwin play at the actual Area Code Games in early August, I saw a smooth actioned 6-4, 200 lb left handed hitter who had a sweet looking swing but didn’t have the strength or the present raw bat speed to get too excited about. His defensive actions at first base were excellent and you could tell he was an athlete, although his 7.52 speed limited his potential to perhaps play a corner outfield spot.
I’m told that Baldwin is an excellent basketball player who averaged 23 pts/10 rebs a game this winter, so the impressions on his overall athletic ability seem to be justified.
Evidently the big difference in Baldwin’s game between when I saw him last summer and what scouts are seeing this spring is that he’s gained 20 lbs of muscle through maturity and a dedicated strength program. The smooth swing with some lift in it is still there, but it’s backed up by some serious bat speed. Baldwin has also been putting up some serious performance numbers, including a recent streak when he went 11-13 with 6 home runs."
Waiting for April.

Local kid
One of my employees is good friends with this kid. He told me about 2 months ago that he worked out for the Royals and they offered him around $200k to sign if they drafted him (if he goes to the minors instead of college – they’d also pay for his college if he decided to go back after his baseball career was over), I called BS at the time but maybe he was telling the truth. He’s a stud from everything I’ve heard (of course, not from anybody that actually knows anything).

Thomas University shortstop Ryan Stovall (Live Oak, FL) and University of Houston-Victoria head coach Terry Puhl are the NAIA’s Association of Independent Institutions Baseball Player and Coach of the Year, the conference announced on Monday. The A.I.I. also released their 2009 A.I.I. All-Conference Baseball team.
A senior on the Night Hawks, Stovall was one of the top hitters in the NAIA in 2009, posting the second highest batting average in the entire NAIA (.487). Stovall also led the NAIA in slugging percentage (1.032), was second in total bases per game (3.744) and fourth in homeruns per game (.465). Thomas finished the season with a 30-13 overall record, however were ousted in two straight games at the recent A.I.I. Championships.

Senior hits two grand slams in same game
Ryan Stovall – Thomas (Ga.) University
March 10, 2009
Thomas (Ga.) University senior shortstop Ryan Stovall had a record day at the Warner (Fla.) Invitational after hitting two grand slams and driving in eight runs against Bellevue (Neb.) University. Stovall tied a NAIA record hitting two grand slams in the same game. The last time a player hit two in the same game was 2006. He also set a TU record for RBI (8) which broke the previous mark of seven held by Adam Cardona in 1999. His eight RBI fell five short of the NAIA national record. The shortstop from Live Oak is now batting .359 with six home runs and a team leading twenty runs batted in.
TU lost the game 11-9 and dropped to 14-7 on the season. Earlier in the day, the Night Hawks defeated Walsh (Ohio) University 5-2.

Listening to the Conference Call part of the draft is hilarious
All of the team reps sound like complete nerds, except for the White Sox rep. Big booming voice – and someone always yells words of encouragement in the background. I’ve heard “GREAT PICK” and “ALL DAY” in the background. Must be Kenny Williams cheering his scouting director on.
Waiting for April.

could be worse
could be hearing “What the fuck was that?” in the background

"all day"
are you serious?
that’s awesome
by royalsreview on Jun 10, 2009 3:07 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
yup
between Ozzie antics, Kenny’s unpredictabiliy, and now that guy, it’s really hard for me to work up the appropriate amount of hate for them,

In addition the Yankees rep feels the need to drop biographical tidbits along with their pick
“The Yankees select Luke Murton, 1B from Georgia Tech University. He’s the brother of Matt Murton by the way. Did you know that no one who works for the New York Yankees has an anus?”
Kidding about the last sentence but the rest is true.
Waiting for April.

Typical for the bloodlines pick
Someone in the fourth round was the son of their asst. scouting director (how’d they find him?)

Pittsburgh draft reps are laughing hysterically in the background
they must be drunk already. On the Royals plan – pack it in after the 4th round and then hand out the $1,000 checks.
