2009 Draft Day 2 Overflow Thread
Eric Diaz, pick #482 out of New Mexico JC is hereafter known as The New Mexicutioner.
Understood?
Or, maybe Matthew White, RHP, New Mexico. There can be only one New Mexicutioner.
Interesting quote just flew by on Twitter from Joe Hamrahi:
The Royals have drafted 27 players...25 are 6 feet tall or taller and 2 are 5' 11". Who says size doesn't matter!

maybe it should be the contest between the two
to prove who really is the “New Mexicutioner”. I mean, what if one of them ends up throwing in the upper 80’s and can’t get K’s to save his life, but we’ve already dubbed him.
Or maybe the first one is the “New Mexicutioner” and the other is the “Newer Mexicutioner”. (or “Newest”).
and we can keep track of their development
and who is “winning” the race to be crowned with the moniker.

She moved from Israel at the age of 3
Her father is a fertility and reproduction specialist. I think she and her brother are probably legitimately smart.
Oh, and there’s this from Wikipedia:
Although she says her family was not religious,11 Portman attended a Jewish elementary school, the Solomon Schechter Day School of Glen Cove, New York. She graduated from a public high school, Syosset High School.1 Portman skipped the premiere of Star Wars: Episode I so she could study for her high school final exams.12
In June 2003, Portman graduated from Harvard College with a bachelor’s degree in psychology. At Harvard, Portman was Alan Dershowitz’s research assistant (he thanks her in The Case for Israel) in a psychology lab. While attending Harvard, she was a resident of the Lowell House13 and wrote a letter to the Harvard Crimson in response to an anti-Israeli essay.14
Portman pursued graduate studies at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem in the spring of 2004.11 In March 2006, she appeared as a guest lecturer at a Columbia University course in terrorism and counterterrorism, where she spoke about her film V for Vendetta.15
In addition to being bilingual in Hebrew16 and English, Portman has studied17 French,18 Japanese,18 German,19 and Arabic.20
As a student, Portman co-authored two research papers that were published in professional scientific journals. Her 1998 high school paper on the “Enzymatic Production of Hydrogen” was entered in the Intel Science Talent Search.21 In 2002, she contributed to a study on memory called “Frontal Lobe Activation During Object Permanence” during her psychology studies at Harvard.22 Due to her scientific publications, Portman is among a very small number of professional actors with a defined Erdős–Bacon number

good point
no really, he’s a really interesting character… you really don’tknow much about him, or what he’s into, etc…
there’s a fair amount of relatively cardboard “weren’t men in the early 1960s pigs” vibes, as you can glean from above as well, but not so much that it’s annoying

it's not too heavy i'd say
the sets & costumes and little historical touches (like an old call exchange center, etc) are almost worth it on their own
Disagree
I watched about half of the first season. By then I felt like I was being hit over the head with a hammer with guys were jerks back then, people were racists back then, people in the suburbs were actually horrible people back then, etc. Plus I can’t get into shows when everyone in the office has sex with each other. Come on. But I agree that some of the period stuff is cool.
But hey, just my two cents. I love Aqua Teen Hunger Force, so I’m an idiot.
how did you feel about draper?
(without spoiling too much of it, in case d_f watches)
he’s got his demons, but seems to be generally respectful, etc
I was torn on him
He was a generally classy guy, but I only sympathize with people so much. I get it that he’s struggling with some things, but then that leads to _______ .
Maybe I’m jealous because I’m married with an ok job living in the suburbs and I subconsciously wish I had something darker going on.
yea, I see that
I just personally didn’t find it to be that preachy, and you’ve got the whole self-made-man/mystery man side of draper as well
don't you realize that all white people who have ever lived in the suburbs were and are racist jerks?

There’s no guarantee a team will call Peterson’s name on draft day, but he said he’s spoken to seven or eight major league clubs. If a team does draft him, Peterson said the contract would determine whether he took the major-league flyer or remained on track to play at the UW.

I wonder what would happen if you drafted someone else’s son.
I mean, I’m assuming there’s like some unwritten rule that you don’t, but I might just to fuck with everybody. I think it would be hilarious. But maybe not. They probably take such things super seriously.
Oh man that would SOOOOO be my job.
