I'm still here
The last few rounds are a snooze fest, but interstingly the Dayton trust is going heavy on the backyard high school kids with today’s picks. The fence is only reaching higher, baby. In fact, it might be a wall now. ALL DAY. To summarize:
32 round – Louis Voit, C, Lafayette HS (Wildwood, MO)
37 round – Tanner Poppe, RHP, Girard HS (Girard, KS) Note – Poppe is ranked in BA’s top 200 draft prospects but has a baseball scholarship to KU and may play TE for the Jayhawks as well.
40 round – Michael Morin, RHP, Shawnee Mission South HS (Shawnee Mission, KS)
43 round – Michael Soptic, RHP, Shawnee Mission East HS (Shawnee Mission, KS)
Waiting for April.
SME and SMS - my rivals!
SME effectively ended my HS playing career. I will never forgive the Lancers.

Was it...
…a gritty HR?
…or just a little plucky?
I’m guessing the latter since the Cards are still up…
later today
I hope to have a draft review column up. I probably won’t have much about today’s picks—since most of these guys aren’t signing anyway and there just isn’t much info about them.
How many rounds...
are there today?

Piccolo
on 610 this morning said they’d likely be taking a lot (around 15) of draft-and-follow (through summer ball) high school guys and make decisions on extending contracts later. Looking at the last two years, not a lot of signings are made out of these rounds anyhow, so some upside fliers (or is that flyers?) make sense.
Yeah, it was a stupid screen name.

I think that pondering 18th century poets and their work is more productive
than worrying about these draft picks. How many will see the field in the first place?

that's a different type of draft and follow
they did get rid of the one you’re thinking of.

I actually hadn't heard the term
since the changes that came with moving up the signing deadline in 2006(?), and its not official or maybe even accurate, but it struck me as that’s the approach the Royals are taking—they’re not drafting with the intent to sign the player now, but will continue to evaluate and see if the both the money is around to entice out of college and if the player is actually worth spending the money on.
Yeah, it was a stupid screen name.

The Cubs
Just took Walt Jocketty’s kid from Ladue, MO. I think they did that just to tweek Cardinal fans.
Yeah, it was a stupid screen name.

We just took Rusty Kuntz's son
A high schooler in Union HS in KS.
The Tigers, meanwhile, drafted Rick Porcello’s brother. I’m guessing he’s not getting the same kind of bonus money in the 47th round.
Yeah, it was a stupid screen name.

what kind of....
singing money is potentially there at these rounds for these kids? Or is this just like an idle threat;
Royals; Hey we’ll draft you!!!!
player; The hell you will!!
Royals; Watch your mouth grandma is in the other room!!!
player; You never listen to me, I want to go to college!!!!
Royals; To learn what? Chase skirt?
player; All my other friends are going to college!!!
Royals; Oh and I suppose if Joel Cedeniero-any-other-player, doesn’t listen to the draft you wont either eh?
player; I DO WHAT I WANT
Royals; Fine, that’s fine, but I have your allowance ready to go
player; Money?

Local review
of Tanner Poppe, Girard High School. Just talked to our sports editor, who covers Girard a lot and, in fact, lives there.
He’s 6’5", 195 lbs. with a nice fastball (88-89 mph). Changeup ok, curveball and splitter need a lot of work. Mechanics are awful, but then again, he only started pitching in the last year. He really hasn’t been trained to be a pitcher much. Then again, the day all the scouts came was also his worst game of the year. Would only skip KU if the money was too good to say no to.

local review of poppe
if your talking about matt clark sports editor, he very seldom gets his facts straight , I’ve watched poppe for several years, he’s about 6’6" & 235. His fastball is [91-93] that’s from college &pro scouts
