Scary Goldstein Quote on Braves Choice of Mike Minor
From the BP Draft Roundtable:
Kevin Goldstein (3:48:21 PM PT): The Braves take Minor. It's indefensible. You don't want to take a high school kid, that's cool. You think he's better than Alex White, who I'm not even that high on, and you're nuts.
Number 7 picks who profile as No. 4 starters make no sense.
So how do #1 overall picks who profile as a number 4 work?

yeah, if he ends up as a #4, it's too bad, but
it’s the “profile” that’s important, right? It’s one thing for a top draft pick to “bust” or to only achieve #4-dom, but if he “profiles” as a #4 to begin with…
I'm not a sabermetrician, but I do play one at Driveline Mechanics.

Yeah
Truth be told, I’m happy with Hooch as he is now. A solid major-league starter. And he was one very quickly.
If he gets any better, that’s a bonus. And I think he will.
yeah...i didnt mind the Hoch pick at the time....
I might have gone Andrew Miller instead, but he hasnt been much better. However, calling for Lincecum is simply second guessing unnecessarily. 9 teams passed on him for a reason. He had some serious red flags….size and workload at UW being the significant ones.

+1
I liked Lincecum but I liked Hochevar and Brad Lincoln better. It wasn’t clear cut which was better.

I read the Indians were going to make Alex White a reliever
That strikes me as pretty stupid too

I may be wrong.
But isn’t Hochevar pretty much a #4 right now?
And I understand he is getting up there in age, prospect-status-wise at least, but he could still improve, I’m sure. So, yeah, I think a #3/#4 starter isn’t TERRIBLE for a first rounder, even first overall. It was a year without a clear-cut number 1, and as long as he doesn’t completely bust out, then you can’t be too mad.
I swear I don't intend for this to come across as negative
But I can’t really see him developing into anything much better than a #4, for one very important reason – he simply will not strike out enough guys to be much better than that.
I suppose he could prove us all wrong by adding a killer changeup to combat lefties – but so far, I see zero indication of that happening. He is what he is.
By the way, that doesn’t make him a bust, even as #1 overall.
Mr Glass, this is a pro sports team, not a retail store - run it like one!
Isn't Hochevar our #3 for the rest of the year
He gave up 6 runs in his last two starts….Davies and Bannister have given more over their last two….and the guy will get better. Davies could get better as well. Bannister, not so much
Next year we will have the same exact rotation. If Crow pitches well and be in the Majors in about a year, Davies/Bannister will square off for the last rotation spot with the loser relegated to the bullpen

Just to say something stupid and to entice riots,
What if we picked up some of these guys?
like four new starting pitchers to go with Mesche and ZacKKKKKKK

(one insurance starter to hold the DL spot in the rotation) Wow open up the checkbook there are some big names on that list.
Yeah? From what I hear, you couldn't hit water if you fell out of a f@#%ing boat.
