Around SBN: Interview With UMD Athletic Director, Dr. Debbie Yow

At some point in the next month or so, the Royals are going to have to throw in the towel on the 2009 season, and when they get to that point, they should just dump Guillen and Jacobs. Their salaries are a sunk cost, and they’re standing in the way of the team getting better. You can’t rebuild with replacement level players making millions of dollars, and unfortunately, the Royals have too many guys that fit that category.

if only we had known before the seasons started...

oh well, Dayton Moore is a total pro. We should just trust him to take care of it. He’s a win-now guy, you can’t blame him for going for it down at the Kougar!

its really hard to judge a hitter

until he spends at least two years in a Royal’s uniform

be patient…get it??…be patient

We always did feel the same, We just saw it from a different point of view, Tangled up in blue.

If this happens, I assume the replacements would be

Kaiahue at DH/1B, with Teahen back in the OF?

Or would they dare to take a look at Lubanski or Parraz?

Mr Glass, this is a pro sports team, not a retail store - run it like one!

i'm going to mini-rant here for a sec

Teahen in RF is an improvement over Guillen in many ways, including salary, but I think that’s not enough.

As I look at the Royals salary structure and team organization, more and more I think that the easier-to-fill positions have to be filled by up-and-coming players who haven’t played out their lower-priced contracts and/or are still very cheap because of arbitration/extension. This means the OF in particular needs to be guys who make little money, saving salary space for pitchers, 3B, SS, C. Of course if you have a superstar, then that would seem to be an extenuating circumstance, but that player has to be a key contributor. But you can’t spend $17M+ on three guys in the OF (Teahen $4.5M, Crisp $8M, DeJesus $4.7) when you only spend ~$40M total on field players—at least not when none of those guys is really much above league average.

Granted, this type of strategy can’t work year-in-year-out, but an $80M-payroll team can’t be a serious contender every year, either.

they should just dump Guillen and Jacobs.

Yes, and if my wife ever leaves me, I should date Keira Knightley and Zooey Deschanel.

Both?

You got the stamina!

was not familiar with deschanel

thank you

although she looks like the kind of actress who only stars in quirky indie twee fests, so that’s a negative

She looks like she should only do indy movies

But she seems to do a lot of big pictures playing opposite much older men that I could never see her with in real life like Will Ferrell and Jim Carrey.

jerkhead

She & Him

She also recently got engaged to Ben Gibbard of Death Cab. Theirs would be some uber-indie babies.

Well yeah, and Elf

Royals, NBA, Golden Hurricane, Hawkeyes, Chiefs, and KU basketball, in that order.

Performance aside, a reason the Guillen contract is so bad.

The guy’s a baby/jerk. So no matter how bad he is we have to start him in RF every night lest he flip out again. We can fantasize about putting Teahen in RF when Gordon comes back or using Guillen to DH more, but Guillen’s not going to put up with that.

So we’re stuck running him out there in RF until we trade/release him. I’m with d_f, who said he doesn’t like to root for injuries, but made an exception for Guillen. It’s our only hope.

by hippdoghipp on Jun 11, 2009 5:51 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

wow.. I don't think I made an exception

If I did say something like that, all I meant was that the team was better off with Teahen in RF over Guilen, and that seeminly that will only happen if Guillen is too hurt to play RF.

I hope that’s distinct than someone getting hurt. My real hope si that, barring a trade, Guillen is simply not alllowed to play defense.

c'mon, admit it
you’ve got a Guillen voodoo doll with pins in it

by benfunke on Jun 11, 2009 6:32 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Hoagy Is Hurt,

Not injured. His hamstrings keep him from running, which hurts his offense and defense. He needs to get healthy or injured; he’s an anchor around this team’s collective neck as it is.

I used to be an A's fan until they left town and got good.

He has been on his best behavior this year

I have to give him credit for that.

I even saw him givin Billy BUtler a little Pep Talk when Billy was heading back out to 1B right after he got picked off of 2nd.

I can’t give Guillen shit for his ‘attitude’ this year at all. I think he’s been a team play thusfar. (I realize this could change at any moment)

BOOM! ROASTED!

I'd by happy to hear him rant

if he could field or hit

I think the rant is coming

If he had been on his yearly hot streak, it probably would’ve happened already.

by Top Ramen on Jun 12, 2009 9:39 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

actually, I think the hot streak ended a week or two ago

given that he’s easily been the worst position player other than Aviles (given decent playing time)…
