The Royals are watching Jeff Francoeur this weekend and there's still obviously a chance that Dayton Moore could be prompted to make a deal for the 25-year-old outfielder.

But to make this deal work, the Braves may need to be willing to assume the baggage and cost that Jose Guillen would bring. Guillen is making $12 million this season and he'll be owed and equal amount before his contract expires at the end of the 2010 season.

I Just Found

Sailors’ game with the Snakes on TV. Buckner is hanging onto a 1 run deficit after 6. He walked the first hitter I saw on 4 pitches, I think (Woodward?), but K’d the next one. I didn’t realize he’s on the 25 man; we could lose that trade yet.

If we can dump Hoagy for Frenchy without eating more tha half of Hoagy’s contract, I’ll take it.

I used to be an A's fan until they left town and got good.

Sweeney Just Hit

A rope to left, diving catch sac fly. Not a threadjack here, what with Mike’s tangential connection to us and bad deals.

I used to be an A's fan until they left town and got good.

Hm

I was thinking Mike was on the DL or something.

Considering his hitting numbers, I welcome Mike back at any time to join Joe Randa in the “Roving Band of Royal mentors to minor leaguers”.

The hackjob some people did on Sweeney over the last few years was sad. Let’s just say there’s a huge difference between the $11M Man (Sweeney) and the $12M Man (Guillen).

Do it

in a heartbeat, pick up the rest of Guillen’s salary for this year and I say do it.

I hereby resign from this post.

I said it last time this came up and I'll say it again:

This would be well worth it just to get out from under JoGui’s salary next year, even if we had to eat the rest of this year’s salary, and even if we didn’t get anything else in return.

needs to go NOW!!!

Wow, a bum for a clubhouse cancer

We can lose 89 instead of 90 this year. Francouer can be Emil Brown without the power!

Take Frenchy

Give up Guillen. I don’t mind paying half of the $12 next season either…

At Least Francoeur

Has some possibility of becoming an above average MLB COF; Hoagy’s boat has sailed on that possibility.

I used to be an A's fan until they left town and got good.

Hoagy is done

Frenchy is only 25…
Any of the kids playing little league would be an upgrade defensively over Hoagy.

I pretty much share the sentiment of everyone else...

I would only do this deal for Guillen. I wouldn’t trade anyone else (maybe Olivo) for him. I don’t think a zebra can change its spots, so I am doubtful he will ever live up to his potential.

…Do we need another player with abysmal OBP?

how about Jacobs?

not that they’d take it

Francoeur is bad

Like truly, completely, awful with the bat. Guillen is a better bat than Francouer, and it isn’t close.

That said, if they take on the large majority of Guillen’s salary, i’d do this deal in a heartbeat. His defense would be a massive upgrade, though he isn’t brilliant this year or last, and if he continues to suck it up we non tender him.

Salary dump, with a slim possibilty of some upside.

That last line about sums it up

Now I just wonder of Atlanta is actually interested in such a deal at all.

by ddw on Jun 21, 2009 12:28 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

So do I

They traded for McLouth, he fills an offensive hole for them. Guillen would no doubt improve their outfield offensive some more, but its a lot of money. And Mclouth isn’t Crisp on Defense, so Guillen’s defense might be shown up even more next to him.

I don’t know, I wouldn’t do it if I were Atlanta, unless the ROyals ate a lot of contract.

dont tell this to Atlanta though...

if we can shed coin that in some way could be used to sign Bay or Crawford in the offseason Im all for it.

as many others have been said

I’d be in purely for the salary dump I’m not sure exaclty how much the Braves would have to pick up — anything over half should be taken up before the Braves have a chance to think “Hey, Dayton Moore signed Jose Guillen… that should tell us something.”

And, yes, it is almost completely a salary dump — Teahen is clearly the better bet gong forward that Francoeur at this point. No, that’s not a particularly glowing assessment of Teahen, either.

I know the JoGui hatefest is in full force here

but I thought his range had improved in the OF recently. I mean it’s not great, but it’s an improvement.

UZR was updated this morning

I’m not sure exaclty what it wa last week — I remember his had been stable for a whle, around -10. As of today, through, it’s -13.2. NO, that’s not UZR/150, that’s just so far this season.

His UZR/150 is -37.4. If you do an ascending sort of UZR/150, that’s the worst in baseball so far this year among qualified hitters of any position.

Frankly, while I knew he was bad, this is way, way worse than I envisioned it.

He just seemed to be a couple steps quicker and getting better jumps on balls.

Mr Francoeur didn't play today

So the Braves obviously were not too desperate to show him off.

If they want to be rid of him enough

We have a problem we can swap with them. I say it’s possible, but I bet the Braves would hold out for something more. They just might get desperate enough.

I think we're missing the scary part of this story.

What can we possibly be “scouting”? I know that DM doesn’t think statistics mean anything, but why exactly do we need a scout(s) to go watch Francoeur bat a few times?

If we’re seriously considering adding Francoeur, I don’t think there’s any hope for the Royals. Just find someone willing to pay $3m of Guillen’s salary and unload him. Don’t make our crappy offense worse by getting Francoeur.

Mellinger:

I do know that Dayton Moore loves Jeff Francoeur as much I love to watch Ashely Judd hug Danica Patrick. More than once when I’ve been talking to Moore has he alluded to Francoeur as an example of a successfully-developed player. (He’s not.) Needless to say, given the Royals hacktastic ways, Francoeur is absolutely the last player they need to acquire. But if it could get Jose Guillen off the books … then maybe you do it anyway.

Couldn't be Mellinger

he wouldn’t follow with:

However, just about any other scenario involving the acquistion of Francoeur would not sit well with me. At all. There is no reason to rant about something that hasn’t happened. But if it does … be ready for a serious blowup.

his would sound more like:

but Dayton knows more about him than anyone else, so fans need to back off on the criticism. There are very good reasons for the deal, but this in no way means that the Guillen signing was a bad deal in the first place — after all, he hit 20HRs and had 97 RBI last year!

So, the Royals are apparently working on acquiring a player...

who’s current fanbase despises him to the point where t-shirts combining his last name and “fail” have already been made, and appear to be very popular. And one of the primary motivating factors for the Royals would be just getting out from under a horrible contract. And this is what’s getting us excited right now.

Royals fans dream about acquiring Jeff Franceour

You will love it. And when he is signed to a long term deal this offseason we can sit back and reflect that Moore is doing everything he can to retain the dynamic young core of this team that will propel our pennant chase in 2017!

I will say this (this one time)…because i don’t want to let u down this time..I think there is truth to this rumor but not like that blogger said…I don’t think Guillen is going anywhere…The Braves would be foolish to think he can play in the national league
