Game 68 Open Thread - Cardinals (38-31) at Royals (29-38)

St. Louis Cardinals at Kansas City Royals, Jun 21, 2009 2:10 PM EDT

Royals try to salvage a game. Today's pitching matchup is Wainwright v. Meche.

Other than the big difference in HRs allowed, Meche and Wainwright have been highly similar, at least in aggregate this season.

Watching The W Sox

Vs Reds on WGN. Jim Landis, who came to KC in the trade that sent Rocky Colavito to the Indians in this trade:

January 20, 1965: Traded as part of a 3-team trade by the Kansas City Athletics to the Cleveland Indians. The Chicago White Sox sent Cam Carreon to the Cleveland Indians. The Chicago White Sox sent a player to be named later, Mike Hershberger and Jim Landis to the Kansas City Athletics. The Cleveland Indians sent Tommie Agee, Tommy John and Johnny Romano to the Chicago White Sox. The Chicago White Sox sent Fred Talbot (February 10, 1965) to the Kansas City Athletics to complete the trade.

I wrote a post on how this trade crushed my baseball fan soul forever. I don’t hate Landis, but he and Hershberger were 2/3 of the worst outfield I ever saw.

I used to be an A's fan until they left town and got good.

So Im not done talking about Frenchy coming to KC...

This trade would actually make our offense worse which is scary, so trading for him would pretty much say we are giving up on this year

Disagree

It would say the Royals are giving up on Jose Guillen and his albatross contract, which would be a very good thing. In conjunction with the return of Gordon, it would likely force Moore/Hillman to start Teahen in RF (or maybe platoon with Francoeur). The combination of those moves would make the overall team better. Even if the offense suffered a little.

The team would be much better, even if it wasnt on the field

The numbers are pretty simple:
Guillen is getting paid 12 million to produce -.8 WAR
Frenchy is gettting paid a couple million to produce -.6WAR
Even if the offense is worse, frenchy HAS to be a bettter defender than Jose, and if the braves are willing to eat a large part of Hoagys contract, then the franchise becomes healthier financially as well.

I agree with everything...

and regardless what we think, I think if the Management made this trade they would be giving up on this season.

And as much as I would like for this to go down (mainly for the money freedom) I can’t imagine that this would go down.

And does anyone know what Tampa is planning on doing with Carl Crawford after this season?

we need to get JoePo back on the case

quotes from the last time he wrote about Hillman:

It should be said up front that Major League Baseball players often grumble about their manager. But multiple sources who are around the club every day say that these Royals openly mock him. A new Trey Hillman joke is almost a daily occurrence, and it’s hard for a manager to recover from being a clubhouse punchline.
catcher Miguel Olivo came out last month and said that he absolutely would not come back to Kansas City and that Hillman obviously did not like him.
there has not been a single, public rebuke of the Royals’ highest-paid player by Hillman. It has left some in the clubhouse to wonder if there are two sets of rules, one for Guillen, one for everyone else.
many feel he does not communicate well, and that was supposed to be Hillman’s greatest strength. Olivo’s biggest issue with Hillman seems to be that he was never told, man-to-man, that his role was being reduced.
After a game in which Gobble got ripped for six consecutive hits (the last a long home run) and was then left out there to die against six more batters, Hillman was asked if he could talk about what Gobble was obviously feeling. He callously said, "Nope."

by BHWick on Jun 21, 2009 3:39 PM EDT reply actions

I never cared much for Olivo v. Hillman

But the other stuff was definitely questionable. Of course, people said positive things about Hillman’s influence on a young team when we did well in September.

Which is more of a

letdown: The Royals as of late, or the U.S. Soccer team (winning 1-0 right now against Egypt).

The US has to win by 3

and Italy has to lose by 4 for the US to advance

actually, they just showed it

If the U.S. wins 3-0 and Brazil wins 3-0 (which is currently the Brazil-Italy score), then the U.S. would advance. The U.S. is up 1-0 now, and has (gasp) looked good.

this team

is a fucking embarrassment. my positive post from yesterday aside, i’m beginning to wonder if this organization was irretrievably broken by glass/baird, to where it’s just not going to come back.

it doesn’t matter who you put on our team, who’s the manager, there’s something about putting on a royals uniform that turns everybody into a total buttfuck. if pujols and jacobs switched uniforms, i swear to god you wouldn’t even notice. jacobs would start mashing home runs and pujols would forget how to fucking play baseball.

i said it the other day, and i’ll say it again, at this point i am embarrassed to be a royals fan.

I hereby resign from this post.

we're in the same

spot we are year after year after year.

step 1. the players suck
step 2. FIRE THE MANAGER!!!
step 3. GM is an idiot, bring in a new one!!!
step 4. wow, we’ve really got some great “prospects” in the pipeline-help is on the way!!!
step 5. (insert new player brought up from minors that was a former savior here) sucks
Rinse and repeat.

It doesn't help at that just as Gordon

made progress last year in the second half, he’s suddenly injury prone. :(

"Do they have people that tall in Mexico?"

by NHZ on Jun 21, 2009 4:15 PM EDT up reply actions

i think

you’re kidding yourself a bit. gordon may end up being a league-average 3B-not what this organization needs. we need longoria, braun, zimmerman.

like i said before, though, we could have gotten longoria and he would have turned out to be gordon. we get braun, he would turn out like gordon.

we don’t know how to draft, and on the off chance that we get somebody worth 1/2 a shit, we have no idea how to develop them. or, we rush them or work them too much, and they get injured.

If the shirtless Hispanic dudes playing soccer in the park followed US Soccer

they’d be thrilled to know that the USA is putting a pounding on Egypt.

Actually, it’s not a park, they’re playing in a field by a high school. If the restaurant next to that park was open, they could make tons of money with gatorade to those guys… or that Mexican Tamarind Pop
