Teahen and DJ are the only guys I can see moving
Maybe Mahay, but he won’t net much.

Mahay for someone like Jordan Parraz
Someone who is “old” for their league but still has some potential. I think it’s not about ceiling here, it’s about a guy who gets to the majors and contributes even if he is “old”.

I think we should keep Teahen.
Teahen is what the Royals think Bloomquist is: a guy who can play ok defense at multiple positions and can hit.
Of course, it depends what we get in return. Will be interesting to see what DM does.

But that's a luxury the Royals can't really afford
And at $4-5 million, which is what he’ll make next year, they really can’t afford it. They Royals don’t have many chips to trade to improve this club, so they need to trade guys like Teahen who is one of the few expendable guys they have.

Surprising
Once Gordon returns, Teahen will become more expendable, particularly when considering how well Alberto Callaspo has played at second base.
If you were thinking, you wouldn't have thought that.

If Teahen and DDJ aren't part of the core, given their age and price
neither is Gil Meche. Yes, Meche is more valuable, but he’s also much more expensive, older, and would bring back something in trade this yeawr (unlike, say, selling low on DDJ).
I think we can all agree that the only reason Teahen isn’t affordable is because he doesn’t have a position of the team — and why doesn’t he have a position on the team? Because of Moore’s superfluous (Crisp) and idiotic-at-the-time (Guillen) moves.
He’s clearly superior to Guillen, and more talented that Jacobs straight up. That’s without even considering the money. The only reason he has to be moved, really, is because Moore can’t put a coherent roster together.
Teahen isn’t a “luxury,” he’s at worst a good platoon candidate — this isn’t Joey Gathright we’re talking about (damn that Allard Baird and his horrible trades!). Unlike Gathright then or Maier now, Teahen can at least fill in capably as he has this year at 3B, and his hitting this year suggests he could still be a league-average player in right or left field (His RV/600 from Stat Corner is 8.1, which “outhits” the RF/LF positional adjustment).
Teahen’s no world-beater, but when considering him someone who should be gone, remember it’s more because of Dayton Moore’s terrible decisions than Teahen’s admittedly up-and-down performances (i.e., this performance at the plate this year was not unforeseen by projections).

I agree
It has much more to do with him being blocked by lesser talent than it does Teahen being bad. In fact, the fact that Teahen is good makes it much more likely he will be dealt. Teams don’t want to acquire crappy players. There is no market for Tony Pena Jr.
He’s a decent player, who, if given a starting job would be a good value, but has no real place to play here if the team is intent on keeping DJ in left.

ONe more reason Guillen for Francoeur makes sense
assuming Atlanta is dumb enough (and since Dayton Moore doesn’t work for them anymore, they probably aren’t) to take on most or all of Guillen’s salary.
Get Frenchy, Non-tender him or try to resign him for next to nothing int he offseason. Even with Guillen gone, It’s better to start a 1.5 WAR Mark Teahen in RF next season for ~$6M than paying $10M/yr for an older 2 WAR guy (maybe Marlon Bird is almost 2 WAR?) on the FA market.

You thin Byrd will get $10 mill?
Pat Burrell couldn’t even get that. Byrd will get something closer to Teahen’s salary.

yeah, you're right -- I'd be suprised if Byrd got $8M, actually
I was just trying to come up with a slightly better, older player than TEahen. I hadn’t realized how badly Byrd was doing this year — Teahen is seriously outplaying him (0.8 to 0.3 WAR in similar playing time).
I’d rather have Teahen than Byrd, salaries being equal..

I'm trying to figure out how the Royals are going to improve their offense
by trading away from their few decent everyday players in DeJesus and Teahen.
It’s not like either of those guys are going to bring stud AAA hitters in return — the return is more likely to be young pitching, and maybe an A-ball hitter. So the offense, which has gotten worse 3 years in a row, is astoundingly going to be even worse this year.

Trade more relievers for hitters!
Gathright for Howell
Ramirez for Crisp
Nunez for Jacobs
It works every time.

"Pitching is the currency of baseball"
Unfortunately, Dayton put his in a jar and buried it in the backyard hoping to grow a money tree.

Given Dayton's reluctance to trade away our starting pitching
I think the only hope the Royals have of improving the offense until 2012 is to pick up damaged goods like Francoeur and hope for the best.

Except when he went Dotel for Davies
That didn’t work too well either.

Ah.....that makes sense then
Dayton Baird is doing a heckuva job.

Agree
The easiest way to improve the offense would be to move DDJ to CF and let Teahen play LF, but the Royals seem reluctant to do that.
If they insist on playing Maier/Bloomquist in CF, they could also improve the offense by replacing Guillen with Teahen, but they’re not going to do that. Hell, they still make Teahen hit 6th so as not to hurt Guillen’s feelings.
Given DM’s trade/FA history, I’m not optimistic about the hot stove.

Trade for Juan Pierre.
That is all.
- W. Bloomquist homered to deep center
- P. Earth explodes
by JobDDT on Jun 26, 2009 11:30 AM EDT reply actions 0 recs
Pierre for who?
Guillen?? With Ethier, Kemp, and Manny coming back, I highly doubt they’d be interested in him, even if they thought he was a quality player.
If it’s anyone else (i.e. DDJ or Teahen), then they Royals would be trading a relatively cheap player for a guy who is more expensive and may or may not perform better than either one over the next few years.

The thing that is different about this deadline
Is, for the first time since we traded Affeldt, we may try to trade someone of value that isn’t on an expiring contract, or exiting season 6 in the Big Leagues. Trading Non-Rent a player types is a better way to add more prospects than trading rent a players, so this is a great chance to get some good value in exchange.
The problem is, our pieces, even though they are either signed long term, or have teamcontrol for 2 or more years, aren’t all that valuable.
Jacobs – Should definitely be traded as we have a bette rversion of him (theoretically) in AAA in Kila. I think he has 2 more years of Arbitration left, so despite his high K ratio/relative lack of power, a AL team w/ a need for a LH platoon DH/Bat off the bench may step up w/ a decent prospect.
Callaspo – I love the guys bat, but he is a liability at best @ 2B. I think he could be a decently valuable chip though. He is a guy that if some team really covets him and offers a significant offer for him, I’d consider it, but I think there is a 99% chance he is back with the team in ‘10 (and I’m fine w/ that).
DDJ – I probably wouldn’t trade him. He is in the midst of his worst season, which is sure to drop his value, and he has really turned it back on since Coco has vacated HIS leadoff spot in the order (since you know…batting order is everything to a players performance, kind of like pitchers pitching day games). He’s signed for next year & a club option for ‘11 on the relative cheap which makes his value higher, both to us, and potential suitors, I just don’t think we’ll ge tthe relative return in a trade that we will by having him in LF (or CF possibly?) the next 2 years.
Teahen – I wouldn’t trade him either. If this team was put together correctly, Teahen would be playing the role of Bloomquist and Bloomquist would be playing the role of Luis Hernandez.
Mahay – Trade for whatever you can get (which won’t be much). A MacDougal type of deal at best.
Guillen – If the Francouer thing is at all possible, do it. If ANY team is willing to give anything to us if we eat his remaining ’09 & HALF of his ’10 salary, we need to do it.
Meche – I wouldn’t trade him unless I got an organizations #1 thru #3 overall prospect in return, and I would probably limit that furthur by saying if it wasn’t a prospect at a position of need (SS, C specifically) I’d pass.
Hochevar – Hold on to him. He’s starting to turn the corner.
Juan Cruz – I think you’d have to be blown away to trade him, even though he has struggled mightily the last month +. His contract is so good for next season, I think you need to keep him to see if he regains form, and we contend next year. Could be a valuable piece to the pen, or moved in a rent-a-player deal nexy July.
Bloomy – Like I said w/ Teahen, if the club was put together properly, Teahen would be playing the role of Bloomy, and Bloomy would play the role of Luis Hernandez. I think Bloomy’s value is as high as it will ever be, and his $3.1 M contract for 2 seasons doesn’t look bad at all right now. If a decent offer is made (I doubt it will be), I’d move him at the peak of his value. If not, I’d use him better next year.

Thats a lot of salary for a team to take on in one go
It might be the best way to offload Jose for free, but it would severely restrict what you would get back compared to just trading Meche.

holding out for prospects at position of need isnt a good idea....
need I remind you of the last time the Royals tried to do that?

Different situation
Meche has 2 years lef ton a really good contract.
Beltran/Damon/Dye were players that had 2 months left on their contract.
If team X offers us a couple of decent prospects that we don’t really have a need for (which would basically be corner IF only at this point), we can afford to pass on the deal since we have the luxury of having Meche signed for more than 2 more months…
