The Marlins inquired about closing stars Heath Bell and Joakim Soria in hopes of filling their relief openings. Injuries to closer Matt Lindstrom (elbow) and Kiko Calero (shoulder) have left them shorthanded at a time they are challenging for the NL East division lead. For now, both the Padres (Bell) and Royals (Soria) are saying neither reliever is available.

Marlins GM: Hey Dayton, I was calling about Joakim....

*CLICK*

Dayton: Even I'm not that stupid....wait what if he was offering ex-Brave Wes Helms??? WHAT HAVE I DONE?!?!?!

Heyman also cites Farnsy as only the sixth worst free agent signing

Lousy east coast bias! He should be #1!

If he trades Soria any benefit would be negated by the extra expense

of added security to ensure he can get to his car after a day at work. Criticize Moore all you want but he’s not stupid enough to pull that unless you make it so lopsided in his favor.

Mike Jacobs?

Pretty sure if Marlins offered same deal for Leo Nunez again, Royals would turn it down……good luck with that clown

I would at least be willing to listen to what they are talking about

Cameron Maybin plus 2-4 mid-range prospects for the certainty of a cost-controlled Soria til 2014 was it? The Marlins always seem to have a lot of young talent. I actually think that might be a great course of action considering that Soria’s so valuable we can’t even pitch him in a game.

Buy low, sell high.

I agree.

Moore would take hell from a ton of people, sometimes these are the moves that can really build a franchise.

If you were thinking, you wouldn't have thought that.

lately it seems like the more people in KC like one of Moore's moves, stupider it actually is

Soria a a good player, but he’s almost certainly the most overvalued by fans. Maybin + some other guys could be a good deal for the Royals.

I don't think this is a situation that is unique to Moore or KC.

Any GM that trades away a young All Star closer would get crushed by call in shows and other media. Especially a fan favorite like the Mexicutioner.

If you were thinking, you wouldn't have thought that.

doesn't keeping players that fans like help raise team revenue?

which helps increase payroll, which should make the team better?

as long as you’re not hurting the team by not trading the player — and i don’t see that neglecting to trade Soria for Marlin’s glorified prospects is hurting the team.

a guy like Mike Stanton is likely to help the team out more....

in 2011 or so whenever the royals are actually a threat to compete than Soria in his 60 IP closer role

even more so since Mr. Soria

is only on pace to pitch about 37 innings for us this year. He’s way too valuable to use more often than that.

i agree he doesn't get used enough

but that doesn’t mean we should trade players to fit our poorly-managed system (or does it?)

by benfunke on Jun 29, 2009 4:30 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

its pretty apparent that he's not going to the rotation....

so if we can get a good everyday player for him, we should jump all over it

Sure….why don’t we throw in Hanley and J.J. while we’re at it…….u guys are hilarious

You'd think, but I suspect there isn't much data to support it

One of BIll James pieces from the 80s that made him more popular was demolishing the myth that Nolan Ryan brought in 10,000 extra spectators every time he pitched — it was more like 500.

I didn’t say it would hurt the team to keep him, unless it would help the team to trade him. By for the most reliable way to increase team revenue is to win more games.

Let me put it another way: Rally’s WAR has Soria as equal in value to Alex Gordon last season, and FanGraphs has him substantially less valuable. I’m probably as high on Gordon as anyone here, and if I had a chance to trade him for a several stud prospects (depending on who), I’d do it.

and i wasn’t necessarily disagreeing with you guys to say i think he shouldn’t be traded, just trying to put forth a different perspective (a devil’s advocate, if you will), for d_f and kabrink/billybb
