Why the T-Bones released Ken Harvey
Sad to say, but one of our old heroes Ken Harvey was released by the Kansas City T-Bones of the Northern League this week. Nothing wrong with Grimace's play, he was just a victim of the number's game:
"Ken's a professional and he understood," McCauley said. "He'd like to stay, but I know Lincoln has had some interest and Wichita. We'll see what happens. He'll catch on somewhere, maybe in our own league."

I was at the T-Bones game today
My company is a corporate sponsor & we had a suite.
Good. God. That is bad baseball. Local Hero Damian Rolles is manning 1B now. Not sure if he was on the squad before or not. You may/may not remember him. He was drafted in the 1st round by the Dodgers in (i think) ’95 or ’96. He went to Schlagle if I remember correctly.

Would the Royals be in contention in that league?

They may/may not be able to score
The pitchers today topped out @ 84 MPH on the Radar Gun. 84. That is the velocity of an aerage college pitcher.
That being said, the game went into extra innings tied at 1. Each team mustered 6 hits in 9 innings. We left after the 10th.
BOOM! ROASTED!

I'm actually a big fan of Independent League Baseball
Once you get past the fact that these guys suck it can be fun. I’m a huge Wichita Wingnuts fan and absolutely love going to the games. Of course they’re not the Royals or major league baseball, therefore they don’t play as such. These are guys making around $200 a week just to play the game they love for at least one more summer. Don’t tell them they aren’t in the majors though, they play their hearts out to win games, not to boost their prospect status. The promotions are often crazy and many are absolutely ridiculous (such as the Welcome to the Yard night for Michael Vick, wikipedia it if you don’t know what I’m talking about) and these are fun for the whole family. The best part of Independent League Baseball is the cost. Instead of waiting for a rare monday night home game to pay $5 for a ticket 3 miles away from the diamond at The K, you can pay $5 and sit right near home plate any night. So yeah, they suck, but they still have a few things going for them.

Baseball is baseball. I think it is all good.
As long as the players take the game seriously and the skill level is reasonable its all good. I think the most important thing is having enough roster stability that the fans get to know the players to a degree. College baseball is great for this, as players stick around for two to four years. I’ve always had a bit of a problem in this regard for minor league teams. Until you get to AAA the chances of seeing a player for more than one season is kinda slim. Just the same, if there were an independent team in Lawrence I would go to see a game or two a week I expect.
I wish the Northern League would drop the veteran rule to allow more players with local connections to stick around.
Just as a side note here, I thought the Northern League might actually fold in each of the last two years. The American Association of Independent Professional Baseball pulled away four of their teams, including cornerstone St. Paul, back in 2005. I’ve wondered if there was some sort of falling out among the old Northern League owners that caused this to happen. The AA now has 10 teams and the Northern is reduced to

I like the indy leagues
Because they at least provide something that is cheaper and different from the big leagues. So its nice to have that alternative. I’ve only been to one T-Bones game in my life, but it was pretty fun (those steak sandwiches are heavenly) and when my kid is a bit older I’ll probably take him to one.
