The Royals also could look to move bullpen arms, but one GM who has spoken with them recently came away with the impression that they are under pressure to win as many games as possible.

What bullpen arms do we have to move?
I always thought arms would imply that it was plural, as in, we have more than one good arm?
- W. Bloomquist homered to deep center
- P. Earth explodes
I think the key phrase is "could look"
anybody “could look” to trade bullpen arms (in fact, i’m looking to trade bullpen arms myself right now). it’s just a way to say something without actually having much if any information.
Farnsworth has 2 arms

but on a separate note, i think GMDM is really under pressure
whether it’s his own pressure (sort of like we used to see from Carl Peterson) or pressure from Glass. he is spending a lot of money and needs to show some sort of result. now, he’d have a much better case if he didn’t have 8M for Farnsworth/Jacobs on his account and Coco’s 5M (or so) injured for the season.
and this pressure very well could be simply that he knows he needs to keep spending to make the team competitive on a consistent basis, and getting Glass to pony up more money is easier if he can say “see, we spent more this year, and we won more”.
there should be some pressure
he talks and walks like he knows what he’s doing, has thrown unprecendented money around for KC, and the team more and more looks like it won’t contend until 2011 at the earliest. The goalposts keep moving back (or forward), and no one in the press has the stones to say so.

But at the same time, he has to be able to open up some money now
That way, all those bad contracts come off the books the years we have our guys coming up where we need only complimentary players. Maybe a stud SS, SP, or CF. The rest of the team is home grown. If we have the money to spend because we’ve already gotten it freed up, it will be a lot easier to spend at that point as well.
Does that make sense?

sort of
if that has to do with the Glasses mindset
I’d still rather have better players

Lol.
I know what you mean. And I think we’re all in the same boat. But you’re right. I think it’s more about mindset than we think.
I mean, who in their right mind throws $8 mill at a Farnsworth?

that's the problem for me, too
i try to convince myself that GMDM’s just spending money on players with more of a concern toward growing the budget and less toward efficient spending . . . but it takes a gigantic stretch of credulity to think that spending a truckload of money on Farnsworth had any sort of alternate motivation.
someone smarter thant he Royals
including the buyout on the 2011 club option, KC is on the hook for $9.25M to Farnsworth.
suicide now

wait
what?
I didn’t even know there was an option for 2011.
If you were thinking, you wouldn't have thought that.
well, only a savvy GM like Dayton could make sure we get another year
out of our terrific investment
Who do we have that could be shipped out without major problems with the fans?
That takes Soria out of the question, so:
Cruz
Bale
Tejeda
Mahay
Colon
Wright
Do those bullpen arms bring anything in return? Maybe Cruz, Bale, and Mahay, but I have no clue what level of player they would bring. Another Maier or Tug?
If you were thinking, you wouldn't have thought that.
Trade 'em all for Diory Hernandez
Just kidding. Dayton Moore is awesome at buildbuiing bullpens. I don’t care what the numbers say — those guys are all awesome.

fingers crossed that someone would take Cruz and a low-level prospect for a SS that could replace
our four-headed, no-hitting (except Bloomy, who can’t quite field) SS monster. not a real prospect, just someone who could be a good defender AND an above-replacement-level hitter. at least we’d have some roster flexibility to bring up a bat or two.
gotta trade for someone named "Ruben" now

Speaking of bullpen arms, a random nickname suggestion
For his recent stellar work “setting up” Soria, John Bale should be known as The Bridge.

of course he's under pressure
you see what it takes for players to go on the DL? Crisp tears his labrum due to not being on the DL soon enough, Aviles is probably going to have Tommy John Surgery, and Soria barely eluded blowing his rotator cuff
Still suffering from the greatest robbery of all time: The stealing of the 1994 AL Central title from the Royals
.
Cruz seems to be more of a NL pitcher for some reason. He’s been dominant in the NL and pretty bad in the AL. He could probably net a decent return from an NL team needing a solid reliever. Lefty relievers can almost always bring a decent return, and Wright’s sinker could be appealing to someone. Robinson Tejeda could probabaly also get us something decent but i dont see Moore trading him.
shit...if mahay can net us a decent return this year....
i wonder what he couldve gotten us last year when his value was at the highest point in his career and dayton felt we needed to hold onto him for $4 million this year

i was solidly in the pro-get whatever you can camp....
the guy had never been as good as he was last year….and him regressing/declining due to luck and age made me pretty confident that he wouldnt be worth $5 million+ from august 08 through october 09

Is anyone other than Greinke untouchable at this point?
I vote no. I would trade every other player on the active roster for the right pieces in return.
Granted, Meche and Soria would have to net a SIGNIFICANT prospect haul for me to part with them.
Waiting for April.
I'm with you but I still think Moore doesn't have the stones to deal Meche or Soria
Even if it’s a great deal for the team.
by Royal Revival on Jun 30, 2009 3:52 PM EDT up reply actions
How could dealing Soria or Greinke be a great deal for the team?
These are the types of young players, under contract and All Star caliber, that the Royals and every other team covet.
Because Soria could bring in more players that contribute more to the team in the future.
If you were thinking, you wouldn't have thought that.
For me, Meche and Butler are the two I'd be hesitant to deal (obviously including Zack).
Soria’s value will skyrocket if he has another couple of outings like last night.
If you were thinking, you wouldn't have thought that.
Why does everyone think Soria will be traded?
There is absolutely no way Soria is traded. I know everyone thinks he has no value to us since we aren’t winning, ok, so say we trade him, then we do start playing well, who is our closer? Farnsworth? Cruz? i dont think so. There is no way Soria goes anywhere. He’s locked up long term to a team friendly contract and he’s one of the best closers in the game. He’s not going anywhere.
I think most people think Soria WON'T be traded
but some of us think that the Royals shouldn’t be so dogmatic about not trading him — for the right offer, that is

Soria is the $5000 set of rims on the 1987 Ford Tempo that is the current roster. The POS leaks oil, the transmission slips, and it gets horrible gas mileage, but the ladies love those spinners!
Sure, we could sell the rims and put the return towards a newer, more reliable used car, but instead we’re hoping to hang onto the rims (and the Taurus) until late 2011 / early 2012 when we might get a upgraded vehicle for free. At which point the Hos will love showing off those rims!

If you the Royals are to contend next year
the pieces should be Greinke, Meche, Hochevar , Tejede/Soria
Butler
Gordon
Guillen (DH)
Teahen
Dejesus
Callaspo
I would keep them
As far as the bullpen I think Disco will be ready…and if Cruz can step it up with Tejeda coming back strong we woudl be ok. Moore should abandon his quest for the holy lefty, and see if Dinardo/Chen can be a better lefty specialist than Bale (remember when he was Moore’s lefty starting project??)
