I can just imagine that convo on TV;

Thanks Greg, well today folks it appears that GOD has finally disowned us and has completely wrote us off his VIP list to enter the pearly gates. Because, well, I don’t know how to say this but……we are totally fucked. If one tornadic storm wasn’t enough we have a good probability of having one ‘nader cross-homoginze with another ’nader……and it’s baring down on our viewing area.

I am sorry folks to tell you this but today there is a 45% chance of rain, with a 100% chance of holy shit this is fucked up.

The Nationals have all the leverage, Boras doesn't

The Nationals can come out say we offered a college kid a 4 year, 20 million dollar deal and Strasburg/Boras wouldn’t take it. The League could step in. Thats twice as much as any draft pick has ever gotten

and if i were them i would cite his recent injury as evidence toward the risk inherent in giant bonuses.

by benfunke on Jun 9, 2009 5:54 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

yeah and just the velocity he throws at is a risk

I still think they shoudl trade the pick for a good MLB ready pitcher, a potential dominant closer and another OF bat.

They have some good players in Zimmerman, Johnson, Dukes, Dunn, Guzman, Flores…

Even their young pitchers Zimmerman/Martis/Detwiler are not too bad. And Lannan is already pretty good

as for the predictions by Callis

have you ever seen a draft prognosticator who knew what he was talking about and got picks correct? just saying, don’t count your chickens until they’re hatched; such as Padres taking Tate—doesn’t that seem like an odd pick? low signability for a guy who wants a ton of money going to a team who is unloading a premier pitcher b/c of cost?

it’s great that we are looking to have a chance at three of the four that the Tigers are looking at plus Green, but last time i checked “sure thing” predictions in the draft were wrong.

by benfunke on Jun 9, 2009 5:43 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Callis is the man...

this is not where he surmises guys will go—he checks his sources. he got the first 20 picks right a few years ago. He could be wrong on some stuff—but Callis is the gold standard.

i'm also a bit confused

as to how not only is he confident, but how are the TEAMS confident? i’ll have to do a fanpost later: i can see some of the logic on maybe 3 of the first 4, but then how are the teams so certain what is going to happen in front of them?

Is it just me,

or is having the Draft on a fake baseball field one of the stupidest things you’ve ever seen?

I mean, I just can’t fathom. MLB just needs to watch the NFL draft once or twice, and figure out what they do well, and try and copy it. Obviously, it will never be nearly as big, but still. At least try and put it somewhere halfway-decent.

A fake baseball field? Really?

Maybe it's just the contrarian in me, but something about Strasburg bothers me.

He seems fine as a kid and everything. But I’m sick of acting as if he is guaranteed to be a star.

I won’t be surprised if he is cast to the bullpen after never entirely living up to his potential. He could be a dominant closer right now, probably, but I’m just not entirely sold on him as a starter.

Yeah, I wasn't saying he's done anything wrong.

I’m talking about the prospect hounds, the “anonymous” scouts who are calling him the greatest pitching prospect ever.

He’s obviously a great prospect. I just wouldn’t be shocked if he busted, most likely for injury reasons (I’ve read a couple of reports that were worried about his mechanics), whereas it seems a lot of people are treating him as if he is already in the majors.

Callis is money.

I’m not sure on this pick, but I think he’ll be a good pitcher.

He seems like the next best pitcher after Strasburg

by jsolo on Jun 9, 2009 6:38 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

According to most, it's a very real possibility.

Of course, anything more than $7 million sounds kind of ridiculous.

So, according to Callis...

Wheeler will go to SF.
Mike Minor to the Braves.
Alex White to the Reds.

Yes.

From the tone of his blog, two hours ago or whatever, he was basically 100% confident on the first 8.

After that, particularly with which direction Detroit goes (BPA with Matzek/Purke or cheaper options like Leake), it should get exciting. Right now, it’s just affirming Callis’ genius.

and now he’s watching all these HS kids get picked before him….but I think we should get this kid.

For the first time, it kind of makes sense to go for

a signability pick.

Considering Strasburg is going to break the entire freaking bank, might as well go WAY cheap with a bullpen arm.

Or would you rather go “cheap” with Grant Green, who himself has a bigger tag.

Or, as Retro continues to say (in what probably makes the most sense), do we take the cheaper Will Myers?
