Being from southeast Kansas Im quite used to fantastical storms...
but a first for me today… News guy came on and said that there were two tornadic storms from opposite directions heading straight this way.

K-Rist
I can just imagine that convo on TV;
Thanks Greg, well today folks it appears that GOD has finally disowned us and has completely wrote us off his VIP list to enter the pearly gates. Because, well, I don’t know how to say this but……we are totally fucked. If one tornadic storm wasn’t enough we have a good probability of having one ‘nader cross-homoginze with another ’nader……and it’s baring down on our viewing area.
I am sorry folks to tell you this but today there is a 45% chance of rain, with a 100% chance of holy shit this is fucked up.

yea...
though signability concerns would seemingly play well with the media… SEEN a lot of bitching about boras etc already
The Nationals have all the leverage, Boras doesn't
The Nationals can come out say we offered a college kid a 4 year, 20 million dollar deal and Strasburg/Boras wouldn’t take it. The League could step in. Thats twice as much as any draft pick has ever gotten

and if i were them i would cite his recent injury as evidence toward the risk inherent in giant bonuses.
yeah and just the velocity he throws at is a risk
I still think they shoudl trade the pick for a good MLB ready pitcher, a potential dominant closer and another OF bat.
They have some good players in Zimmerman, Johnson, Dukes, Dunn, Guzman, Flores…
Even their young pitchers Zimmerman/Martis/Detwiler are not too bad. And Lannan is already pretty good

as for the predictions by Callis
have you ever seen a draft prognosticator who knew what he was talking about and got picks correct? just saying, don’t count your chickens until they’re hatched; such as Padres taking Tate—doesn’t that seem like an odd pick? low signability for a guy who wants a ton of money going to a team who is unloading a premier pitcher b/c of cost?
it’s great that we are looking to have a chance at three of the four that the Tigers are looking at plus Green, but last time i checked “sure thing” predictions in the draft were wrong.
Callis is the man...
this is not where he surmises guys will go—he checks his sources. he got the first 20 picks right a few years ago. He could be wrong on some stuff—but Callis is the gold standard.
i'm also a bit confused
as to how not only is he confident, but how are the TEAMS confident? i’ll have to do a fanpost later: i can see some of the logic on maybe 3 of the first 4, but then how are the teams so certain what is going to happen in front of them?

I’d love to get Josh Phegley, but he’ll be gone by the third round

Is it just me,
or is having the Draft on a fake baseball field one of the stupidest things you’ve ever seen?
I mean, I just can’t fathom. MLB just needs to watch the NFL draft once or twice, and figure out what they do well, and try and copy it. Obviously, it will never be nearly as big, but still. At least try and put it somewhere halfway-decent.
A fake baseball field? Really?

So now Washington has to offer all their other draft choices $1000 to sign
$40M is a lot to spend on a bust
I doubt he signs before August 17!
but I bet Boras inserts a clause and he gets called up—at least that’s what I’m hoping sitting on the #1 waiver spot in my fantasy league
yea it has huge consequences in my league
if he gets called up he goes in the main auction and will probably go for 70+ dollars.
If he doesnt, then the worst team can snag him in the snake minor league draft and get him on a cheap 3 year contract.
I was thinking that if he signs in about 10 days to 1 month
He starts IN the bigs. Out of the pen of course….

Maybe it's just the contrarian in me, but something about Strasburg bothers me.
He seems fine as a kid and everything. But I’m sick of acting as if he is guaranteed to be a star.
I won’t be surprised if he is cast to the bullpen after never entirely living up to his potential. He could be a dominant closer right now, probably, but I’m just not entirely sold on him as a starter.
How has he acted as if he is guaranteed to be a star?

Yeah, I wasn't saying he's done anything wrong.
I’m talking about the prospect hounds, the “anonymous” scouts who are calling him the greatest pitching prospect ever.
He’s obviously a great prospect. I just wouldn’t be shocked if he busted, most likely for injury reasons (I’ve read a couple of reports that were worried about his mechanics), whereas it seems a lot of people are treating him as if he is already in the majors.

He will be 23 in November and he is close to breaking into our rotation….
Come on Dayton Moron pick someone who can make our team in 2010!
I'd like to see the Royals take Crow actually
I think it could be a steal
i just want someoen who can help us next year
a pitcher that can be our 5th starter and we can end the Bannister experiment

What do we do if:
Green, Crow, Turner are all available at our pick?

Crow baby
like the name, from Kansas…he would be on board with Moron’s program
I already know your opinion - thankyou for sharing it with me for the enth time.
Perhaps if he didn’t General Manage like an 8 year old I wouldn’t call him that.
He has a chance to graduate to HS in about 10 minutes. Let’s see what happens

I like nicknames, too bad you can't share in the jest
Dayton Moron…..until he proves oitherwise.
If he didn’t trade away our Nunez, Ram Ram, JP Howell, Dotel and somehow signed Dunn or Orlando Hudson and actually made some good moves he woudl be Datyon Da Man Moore

For the first time, it kind of makes sense to go for
a signability pick.
Considering Strasburg is going to break the entire freaking bank, might as well go WAY cheap with a bullpen arm.
I thought it would have been relaly funny if they repicked Crow.
I was hoping for it. lol.

So, who wants to break the bank for Matzek?
Or would you rather go “cheap” with Grant Green, who himself has a bigger tag.
Or, as Retro continues to say (in what probably makes the most sense), do we take the cheaper Will Myers?
Rox take LHP Tyler Matzek

I don't think he's bad (Hochevar)
But it’s a lot of extra baggage we could have escaped from. He’s old, smacks a little of signability, and he just spent the last year in a substandard development phase
I don't mind drafting pitching....
but I like having bats
and a legit SS.

Yes Hochevar has struggled
but enough of this HE SUCKS
if you haven’t noticed the whole team sucks, but alteast Hochevar won the one game we did win out of the last 10
who here said he sucked?
the comparables to Hochevar sitting out is the only thing that scares me

yeah thats fair
but after talking about how we should have drafted a college player, All i heard is we drafted a bust in Hochevar.

I watched this guy pitch
a couple weeks ago. He started for the Saints against my beloved Wichita Wingnuts and he was not impressive at all. I know it was just one game, but it’s never good when you get lit up at this level. Either way, he’s still very young.

That's silly.
First of all, it isn’t as if Hochevar has been a “bust”. I’m still a believer.
And for two, Crow is better according to most scouts. Even if Crow is just “another Hochevar”, if that’s another 3-level starter that isn’t bad.
A's got Grant Green....
looks like we’ll play against him someday.

Guys that are all about the money have no desire to be the best later
they want the money up front.
What would you rather have, a young SS with a bat and a glove? Or a pitcher that sat out a year after college because the Nationals didn’t give him enough money?
I read a quote from Crow somewhere (don’t know where so I can’t go back and find it) that made it sound like it wasn’t completely about the money, but also about how the Nationals handled the negotiations. He said something about how any of the other 29 clubs would’ve handled it better. Given that Bowden was the GM at the time, and the way the franchise is run in general, I sorta believe him.
I am Billy Butler's Gold Glove.
yeah he said the GM cut off contact with him
and also they were trying to “bully” him into signing. Not sure what that means

But, again, drafting is inexact
Still, I trust Beane’s track record to Moore’s, which is admittedly short

I'm not going to pretend to know anything about anyone in this draft.
However, reading the ESPN Insider description of Crow has me pretty much thinking he is a carbon copy of Luck Hochevar. Which isn’t exactly a good thing at this point.
Could’ve used a shortstop, but whateva.
- W. Bloomquist homered to deep center
- P. Earth explodes
Crow is more of a running two-seamer & slider guy
more than the sinker guy that Hoch is.

loL @ everybody acting like green is a sure thing
realistically speaking
Seriously.
And it isn’t as if, if Crow was another Hochevar, that we should necessarily complain. I mean, seriously.
A ridiculous amount of draftees bust. If we get another #4 starter, and that is pretty much what Hochevar is RIGHT NOW, without any future improvement. I’ll take that.
yeah well
we definitely need another 3rd basemen….
