2009 Draft overflow thread--Crow and Myers
Aaron Crow is our top pick. hopefully he signs quickly and gets some innings.
Topeka Capitol Journal interview with Kevin Goldstein about Crow:
"He's not going to get past 7 or 8"--Goldstein
UPDATE:
3rd Round Pick--Will Myers HS C
This is the guy we worried that we were going to take at #12. I didn't like him at #12 but at #91--that's great. He'll cost us but an excellent pick

I was kinda hoping we picked Green since he's a USC kid.
But we got Bannister so I guess one is fine.

It isn't the same as the major problems USC has had in the recent past.
Paying OJ Mayo to play? The whole Reggie Bush issue?
Hiring Rudy Hackett for Daniel Hackett. Now, you are right that nearly every program in the country have some of these problems. USC has just had a lot more of these problems, at least recently, and to more serious degrees.
by rockchalk on Jun 9, 2009 7:44 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
No I agree, it's been bad and I pin that directly on the shady AD Mike Garrett (former Chief)
The Reggie Bush thing was kind of a weird deal with a greedy family and player. None of that benefited USC (given that the goal was to get Reggie to the pros as soon as possible) but for sure it gives rise to significant oversight concerns.
The OJ Mayo thing is just pure and utter stupidity. The guy had trouble written all over him and that USC went ahead even though the Reggie Bush thing had just come to light was just poor poor judgment. In the end this could be the torpedo to sink the ship.
However, that said, i don’t think USC as an institution “cheats” more or less than most other major institutions. They’re in the spotlight and the stakes are higher so more comes to light (just like when UF, FSU, Ohio State, etc. all were top dogs) and as such it gets reported more. Trust me when I was at USC in the 90s and all our major sports SUCKED you hardly heard a peep about anything. My point is to simply state “USC’s a bunch of cheaters” is intellectually lazy. I know that’s the perception based on media coverage but in many ways it ignores the nuances of life in the NCAAs in this day and age.
by Uscbalto on Jun 9, 2009 7:56 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Yeah, I'm pretty sure we are in accord here.
And if you didn’t just see, Tim Floyd resigned earlier today. So, yeah. Maybe that will clear some stuff up.
And yes, it isn’t as if USC has cheated forever. It’s a recent thing. But, recently, they’ve done it more than anyone else, and combined with their ridiculous success, makes them a common target for the “cheater!11” tag. It’s fun to go along with at the time, particularly since I can’t stand USC (living out in Southern California has made me hate both USC and UCLA, although I do like USC basketball. But UCLA basketball and, in particular, USC football have so many bandwagon fans, I can’t root for the school. Of course, Kansas basketball has the same problem, but whatever…)
by rockchalk on Jun 9, 2009 8:07 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Was it me or did Floyd catch you as being extremely sketchy?
Even at Chicago and Iowa State. I never liked the dude from the time we hired him. Just seemed shady and he always threw those on court tantrums.
Anyway, yeah, I think SC’s time to pay the piper is coming. I don’t mind them hitting the bball program hard but I’ll be seriously depressed if they lay the hammer on the fb program. But what goes up must come down, I suppose. :(
by Uscbalto on Jun 9, 2009 8:30 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
I think that the basketball program had a lot more serious
problems, and will receive a much harsher punishment than the football team.
Really, I bet the football team just gets a slap on the wrist. As you said, the Reggie Bush thing was kind of unfair to USC, in terms of them getting punished for a player doing something. Obviously, it’s still against the rules, but it isn’t the same as what Floyd did, reportedly actually paying a player to come to the school and whatnot.
And yeah, Floyd has always been sleazy. A good recruiter, but who knows how much of that is legal and how much of it isn’t.
The basketball program should get a hefty punishment, but with Floyd resigning, it might be lesser now. Certainly a loss of scholarships/recruiting privileges, but maybe not a postseason ban.

With no real knowledge to back this up...
I thought that the “better” indie leagues were full of older AAA/AA guys who teams didn’t see potential in any more. So perhaps he’s seen some seasoned hitters, somewhat akin to what he would have faced in actual AA this year? Yeah, i’m sort of grabbing for straws. Does anyone know for sure the quality this league??
On a positive note: it’s very likely that his training staff last year was better than the Royals’.

I think he's pretty embarrased by what happened and publically blamed the nationals
He said “29 out of 30 teams woudn’t have treated me this way.” So there is no way in HELL he doesn’t sign with the Royals after a claim like that.
As far as the Hochevar comparisions, Crowe coudl possibly be a #2 pitcher!
Royals chose RHP Aaron Crow with the 12th pick in the 2009 draft.
Crow, a Missouri product, was drafted ninth overall last year. His bonus demands remain quite high or else he might have went in the top five this time around. Crow has a strong fastball-slider combination, and reports indicate that his changeup has improved over the last year. He could develop into a second or third starter.
Aug. 16, 2008 – 1:52 a.m. ET
The Nationals failed to sign first-round draft pick Aaron Crow before Friday’s midnight deadline.
The two sides were reportedly between $700,000 and $900,000 apart. If Crow’s changeup develops, he could be a solid No. 2 in the majors, but for now he’ll play with the independent league Fort Worth Cats. The Nationals will get a compensatory pick for their failure to sign Crow.

Good read
“Let’s just say they’re both the same age and they’re both at Fort Worth right now. I honestly think most guys would take Crow. Hochevar was kind of a surprise for a lot of people, that he ended up being No. 1. Like Crow, a lot of people saw him as the best college righthander in the draft the year he didn’t sign. There are a lot of similarities. Crow has more power than Hochevar, and Hochevar probably has better breaking stuff. Often in the draft, upside rules the day, and upside is often based on velocity. I think Crow is the better prospect, and I think Crow could move about as quickly as Hochevar did to the big leagues.”

Royals Fan 2: “He’s still young and could improve!”
Royals Fan 1: “Not enough. Your first round pick needs to be an ace or an all-star. Crow’s neither, so Crow = BUST”
Royals Fan 2: “We picked 12th that year, it’s not like he was the first or second pick. Besides, he made it to the majors. That’s better than most first round picks!”
Royals Fan 1: “He was a college pitcher picked in the top half of the first round, I’d hope he could make it to the majors. That he made it is the only thing keeping him a bust rather than an EPIC FAIL”
Royals Fan 2: <Something about Dayton’s and/or Glass’s limitations, maybe FIP gets mixed in>

Columbia, MO: Hot Corner
Someone should tell Cards 3B Chris Dominguez to shove a sock in his mouth.
After taunting the 1B and the catcher while rounding the bases, he preceded to dance back out on to the field as he returned to his position, before completely turning to face the Mizzou dugout and exchange some words.
The real question is… how is he still in this game? The umpires, and furthermore, the NCAA reps have really botched this decision. Dominguez should be taking a shower.
But at least the crowd is riding him for it; after a foul out by Evan Frey, Dominguez was roundly taunted every time he touched the ball as it moved about the horn.

Columbia, MO: Dominguez Doubles Up Mizzou With Dinger
Chris Dominguez just went deep with a Carlton Fisk-esque line drive.
And rounding first, he spun around and had words with Tiger 1B John McKee, before engaging in some extra-cirricular words with the Mizzou catcher Trevor Coleman.
The Tiger bench spilled out on to the field, and the Cardinals mobbed Dominguez.
Both these benches have been warned, and bad blood has officially been stirred between these two teams.

I hope he doesn't sign, breaks a leg, throws out his arm, and never plays the game and works at McDs

Yep - guy was a major ass.
Why didn’t he get kicked out of the game? Oh let’s see…
Oh yeah, it was against Mizzou… (why would we expect any rational outcome such as that?)

Yeah, I want Myers.
If GMDM liked him to potentially take him at 12 if everyone else he liked was gone, then taking him at 91 would be a steal. Especially if we are willing to pay for him.
Good value to make me feel better about the day.

We are almost up again!
So I take it Myers is available?

MLB TV is surprised he lasted this long....
Suggested a $2 million signing bonus….
I think this is one of the “tell them you want $$$ and are going to college. We’ll get you signed.”

Sweet.
We could certainly use some catching help, and it sounds as if he can stick there. Plus, power is always a good thing.
If we can sign him, and $2 million isn’t THAT much, and we should be able to, then it’s a great pick.
Fantastic value.

And Angels.
When you’re surrounded by them, you learn to really hate all of them.
I actually like the Dodgers, though. The only SoCal team I can stand (well, and the Clippers too, but I’ve yet to actually run into a Clippers fan in 4 years out here, and that isn’t even an exaggeration, so that doesn’t really count).
I do hate the first four, though, with a ridiculous amount of passion. It’s really unhealthy, to be honest.

Listening to Postgame GMDM interview
Highlights:
“JJ had the final call” on Crow draft pick
“It was an obvious choice… because he was the best power arm on the board”
Um… so we were ONLY going in looking for “power arms”? Nevermind the fact that everything I’ve read about the guy says his fastball maxes out at 92-93, which really wouldn’t be a “power arm”.

He defined Power as movement
especially late, on all three of his pitches. And a fastball reaching 96.
We’ll see i guess.

Why do they keep calling him a power pitcher?
They just said they’ve seen him at 96 MPH, but ESPN says he has maxed out at 94.
What the hell.
