.238/.336/.498 career line

I suppose that’s better than the current Jacobs, and I don’t know how he is on defense, but this year is an obvious outlier for BA and OBP.

by AxDxMx on Jul 1, 2009 4:22 PM EDT up reply actions

his salary is less than half of Jacobs

nad he cost no talent

he’s always had patience and power, and can actually play defense

I'm not a sabermetrician, but I do play one at Driveline Mechanics.

by Matt Klaassen on Jul 1, 2009 4:22 PM EDT up reply actions

To me he's always been a strikeout or homer guy, mostly strike out.

That reputation probably hurt him a bit. AAAA type guy, like Jack Cust but can play defense. Proving it wrong this year, and probably until he signs a fat contract, and then he’ll return to his career line.

by AxDxMx on Jul 1, 2009 4:42 PM EDT up reply actions

well, I thikn he'll do better than his career line

sporadic playing time before this year.

but, yeah, this is what good teams do: sign a guy cheap before his monster year (if he doesnt work out, no big deal, $1.5M, who cares), not after.

I’d be shocked if he hits .300 on the year, still.

hey, actually i did have a serious stats question for you

is there a way to “reconcile” for lack of a better word, the components of the team (the individual players’ WARP, VORP, whatever’s best) to the overall team record? i may be trying to compare apples and oranges, but what i’m getting as is, if we took the royals team and added up their “contributions” (i use that term loosely), what would be the result from a win/loss perspective? and, if there was a significant difference one way or the other between the components and the whole, what would that tell us about what the team is deficient in (holy shit, i may have just stumbled on the formula for “grit”!).

any ideas?

by Home Run Tony Cogan on Jul 1, 2009 4:50 PM EDT up reply actions

yeah, there is

obviously, they aren’t going to match perfectly, although they should be better the larger the sample. There are always deviations for various reasons (i.e., some hits are better "timed’ than others, you can do this stuff with WPA + and -, but most people don’t htink that represents a repeatable skill) and so on… no one thinks they are that perfect.

This is a long issue for a comment. The short version is that you can take the teams total WAR and add it to what you think a replacement level team would be over the same number of games (.300 is what a lot of people accept as a “replacement level” team — about 49 wins a season).

Like I said, one can’t expect an exact match, especially in this number of games. But it’s pretty good. If you’re interested, I can look up and find the link for a guy who is doing some expanded standings for all the teams this way. I keep meaning to for KC, but ‘m lazy and I’m not sure it’s worth the effort for me to do an inferior job.

For example, did you know that parks can have a very large effect on strikeout rates? Here are the five best and worst ballparks for strikeouts:

Team K
Marlins 1.09
Mariners 1.09
Padres 1.08
Twins 1.07
Dodgers 1.06
-
Diamondbacks 0.93
Athletics 0.93
Orioles 0.93
Royals 0.91
Rockies 0.89

Now what about walks? I’m fairly certain that sabermetric conventional wisdom is that the effect of parks on walk totals is minimal, if not non-existent. I found, however, that this was not really the case.

Team BB
Brewers 1.07
Mariners 1.06
Indians 1.05
Marlins 1.05
Diamondbacks 1.04
-
Yankees 0.97
Astros 0.97
Angels 0.97
Twins 0.96
Pirates 0.94

One of the more interesting effects I found is that parks have a strong affect on the proportion of batted balls that are infield flies.

Team FlysIF
Brewers 1.15
Mariners 1.12
Marlins 1.12
Reds 1.08
Devil Rays 1.07
-
Phillies 0.93
Royals 0.93
Indians 0.92
Diamondbacks 0.92
Giants 0.90

Also, how is it normalized? Does it account for the fact that, say, Royals pitchers pitch half of the innings at Kaufman (I assume it does)?

love this Aviles quote............
“It’s definitely disappointing,” Aviles said, “but I know something’s wrong there because it wasn’t getting any better. When I got a second opinion, that’s when we found the tear. But it’s a double-edged sword. I’ll be healthy at the end of it, and I know what I’m capable of doing when I’m healthy.”
