Trade Rumors, started right here in this post!
God I'm BORED! I spend the vast majority of my Sundays in fishing tournaments, but, alas I have the weekend off! Since it is raining, and I don't have to be, I'm not out on the boat. Instead, I'm just kicking around the Yunio trade in my overactive brain, and I thought I'd look for some silver lining.
Since I have no more silver lining to add (Other than what I already posted in the Original thread), I decided I'd look for trade partners for some of our other pieces that actually match up with what other teams have to offer...
In order to make its way into this piece, there needed to be some reliable documentation of a teams needs at the deadline. I've included the link to the source of this information with the write-up...
Royals trade Robinson Tejeda & Ron Mahay to Marlins for Jeremy Hermida, Leo Nunez, Ross Gload and Hanley Ramirez
In addition to re-assembling the '05 Mariners, Dayton Moore is trying to piece together the '06 Marlins as well via miamiherald.typepad.com
(multiple sources; http://www.mlbtraderumors.com/florida_marlins/index.html, http://insider.espn.go.com/mlb/features/rumors)
Miami, FL - With the Marlins unable to coax the Pirates out of Matt Capps, they turned to the AL version of the Pirates for even more bullpen help, and got 2 middle relievers from Kansas City. Robinson Tejeda is a 27 year old failed starter that has found a home in KC's bullpen over the last two seasons. He emerged in '08 as a guy with the ability to get strikeout, sporting an impressive 9.4 K/9 ratio that has been bested thus far in '09 with a 12.4 K/9 Rate, which is good for 12th in all of baseball (4th if you only count pitchers that have thrown significant innings).
Ron Mahay is a 38 year old reliever that has had a long career in baseball. Mahay becomes the third Left Handed thrower in the Marlins bullpen, joining Renyel Pinto and part-time closer Dan Meyer. Mahay got off to a slow start in '09, but has since rebounded which has included his most recent stretch of games, in which he has yielded just two Earned Runs over his last 7.2 innings of work, while amassing 7 K's over the same stretch of games.
In order to secure these arms from Kansas City, the Marlins gave up one time uber-prospect Jeremy Hermida. The Royals have reportedly shown interest Jeremy Hermida in the past, and Dayton Moore continues his trend of getting players that he wants, no matter how long it takes. Hermida is a 25 year old corner outfielder, with a little pop, and the ability to hit for a decent average that has a career high .296 BA in 2007. He has an unusual skill set for a player acquired by Dayton Moore, in that he doesn't appear to be allergic to talking a walk on occasion, as he sports a career high of 48 walks, which will surely be bested this season, as he already has 39 to this point in the season.
A's trade OF Matt Holiday to the Reds in part of a three team that also involves Royals David DeJesus & Mark Teahen Cincinnati's Edwin Encarnacion and several prospects
(http://insider.espn.go.com/mlb/features/rumors, http://www.baseball-intellect.com/cincinnati-reds-top-prospects-part-2/, http://www.minorleagueball.com/2008/12/12/690649/oakland-athletics-top-20-p)
Cincinnati, OH - With the sudden loss of Jay Bruce to a broken wrist, the Reds found themselves in need of a big bat, and they found on in the form of Matt Holiday. the breakdown of the entire trade is as follows.
A's Get
Edwin Encarnacion, David DeJesus, PTBNL (from Reds, top 20ish prospect)
Reds Get
Matt Holliday, Mark Teahen
Royals Get
Drew Stubbs, Ramon Ramirez (from Reds) & Jamile Weeks, John Donaldson (from Oakland)
In landing Holliday & Teahen, the Reds have replaced the big LH bat of Bruce with a big RH bat in Holliday, and added a LH bat in Teahen to man 3rd base while they wait for #2 rated prospect Neftali Soto, who they anticipate being in Cincinnati in 2011.
The A's filled 2 needs with this trade, landing an everyday 3B and LF. Third base has been a problem for the A's since injuries derailed the career of Eric Chavez. DeJesus will immediately step into the starting void left by the departure of Holliday. DeJesus is under contract through '11.
The Royals meanwhile, took this opportunity to stock the upper levels of their farm system with several players that are close to being MLB ready. The centerpiecs of the deal is Drew Stubbs, who they got out of the Reds organization. HE is a 24 year old Center FIeld prospect that (in a shocking deal for Royals GM Dayton Moore) has shown great plate discipline so far in his Minor League career. A 2006 first round draft pick by the Reds out of the University of Texas Stubbs has good speed and good range in the outfield. Look for him to be in the Kansas City roster immediately.
Ramon Ramirez is a 26 year old reliever, also from the Reds organization that saw 2.1 innings of work in Cincinnati this season. He is regarded as having average velocity, and above average off-speed pitches.
Jemile Weeks headlines the players obtained from Oakland in this trade. Younger brother of Brewers 2B Rickie Weeks, Jemile has a similar skill set has his older brother with power, speed and defensive abilities. One major concern is that he also shares his brothers propensity to get injured, but the Royals found the potential reward with the risk, as Jemile sports a .313 BA with a .946 OPS at Single A Stockton of the California league thus far in 2009. Look for him to be assigned to Single A Burlington to finish out '09, with a trip to Northwest Arkansas later this year, or to start the '10 season.
John Donaldson, 24, adds catching depth to an organization that is all but void of catching depth. His biggest plus has been his bat. Half way through his AA season, he boasts a .811 OPS, 56 walks, and 29 doubles. On the downside, he also has struck out 60 times, and is not known for his defensive prowess. If he can develop his defensive skills, look for him to make the jump to AAA, and possibly Kansas City sometime on the '10 season.
Kansas City trades Miguel Olivo to the Cubs for Brandon Guyer & PTBNL
(No link, but I've heard the Cubs may look for a C since Soto has been mired in sophomore slump, now hurt, and they don't have any real good catchers that are MLB ready that aren't there already)
Chicago, IL - With reigning National League rookie of the year Geovanny Soto on the Disabled list, and not putting up the numbers that were anticipated, the Cubs today made a move for an offensive backup catcher in Miguel Olivo, from the Kansas CIty Royals in exchange for OF prospect Brandon Guyer.
Olivo has shown some pop with the bat this year, blasting 13 HR, in just 225 AB's. He has also been given a lot of credit by Kansas City Ace pitcher, and All-Star game starter Zack Greinke for his success on the mound. Expect Olivo to start for the Cubs until Soto is healthy, but if Soto doesn't regain form, he may play even after Soto returns.
Guyer, 23, is an OF prospect that the Cubs drafted in the 5th round of the '07 draft out of the University of Virginia. He projects more to a corner OF spot long-term, but he does have the ability to cover ground in CF. He began the season in Low A, but has since been promoted to High A. Since his promotion, he has hit for a .364 Average, and stolen 10 bases in just 27 games while posting an .887 OPS. Look for him in Burlington, the Royals Class A affiliate.
