Yeah Im truly surprised to see Senor Tobacco in there

whats wrong with Olivo?
Please tell me you wouldn’t rather have Buck?
by I need more Esteban on Jul 17, 2009 7:42 PM EDT up reply actions
I would.
Buck realizes there are pitches you don’t have to swing at. It’s basically an argument of incompetence vs stupidity though, so it’s kinda pointless.
ya know, i just kinda want to see what all BPJ can do, but thats just me..
I do like miggy more than buck actually, but i kinda like BPJ
"I can resist everything but temptation." - oscar wylde
alright well I always
forget about Pena, I’m just so over John Buck….and plus if he were playing this weekend the Rays would set the record for most stolen bases in a single game, inning, and series…..How is Pena’s defense?
by I need more Esteban on Jul 17, 2009 7:46 PM EDT up reply actions
if that is so
then give me Olivo most nights. I’m so sick of terrible defense on this team.
by I need more Esteban on Jul 17, 2009 7:48 PM EDT up reply actions
exaclty how would Miguel Olivo solve the problem of terrible defense?

He has an above average arm, and fair speed. Both Buck is without.
So he’;s got that going for him
"I can resist everything but temptation." - oscar wylde
speed is important to catcher defense?
I suppose in Olivo’s case it does help him get back the backstop to get those pitches that end up there
Seriously, though, he’s good (not great) at throwing out baserunners, but his historically awful (seriously — one of the 2 or 3 worst since 1956) bad pitch blocking ability gives most or all of it back.
Not that Buck’s a good defender…

but exactly what I was saying
is that on this team, we have no other options and so I say that when it comes to defense, he is the best option we have, sadly

He wouldn’t solve it, he would be better than anything we’ve got at the position of catcher (this is assuming Pena isn’t very good which I still don’t know for sure)

I'm not saying he was a bluechipper
But I think a lot of people thought he had the on-base skills and defensive chops to be fine as a starter at SS in the bigs. I don’t think anyone saw this power spike coming, though.
"Do they have people that tall in Mexico?"
that's what I remember

Ok, lets assume next year that Aviles comes back and plays 2nd.

He's not the type of masher
where I’d like to see him pigeonholed as a DH. As d_f suggests, he might be worth a look in the outfield if the Royals can find another 2B, possibly giving Bert some defensive value. You suggested Aviles, which could work if the organization isn’t totally ignoring his existence.
