Other than,

whats wrong with Olivo?

Please tell me you wouldn’t rather have Buck?

by I need more Esteban on Jul 17, 2009 7:42 PM EDT up reply actions

I would.

Buck realizes there are pitches you don’t have to swing at. It’s basically an argument of incompetence vs stupidity though, so it’s kinda pointless.

ya know, i just kinda want to see what all BPJ can do, but thats just me..

alright well I always

forget about Pena, I’m just so over John Buck….and plus if he were playing this weekend the Rays would set the record for most stolen bases in a single game, inning, and series…..How is Pena’s defense?

by I need more Esteban on Jul 17, 2009 7:46 PM EDT up reply actions

if that is so

then give me Olivo most nights. I’m so sick of terrible defense on this team.

by I need more Esteban on Jul 17, 2009 7:48 PM EDT up reply actions

He has an above average arm, and fair speed. Both Buck is without.

So he’;s got that going for him

"I can resist everything but temptation." - oscar wylde

by cfizzle on Jul 17, 2009 7:50 PM EDT up reply actions

speed is important to catcher defense?

I suppose in Olivo’s case it does help him get back the backstop to get those pitches that end up there

Seriously, though, he’s good (not great) at throwing out baserunners, but his historically awful (seriously — one of the 2 or 3 worst since 1956) bad pitch blocking ability gives most or all of it back.

Not that Buck’s a good defender…

but exactly what I was saying

is that on this team, we have no other options and so I say that when it comes to defense, he is the best option we have, sadly

From JoePo's Counting Counts post:
After 2-0 Count
Batters hit: .293/.518/.500

Pitchers go from 1-0 to 2-0 counts: About 44% of the time.

When a batter starts the count at 2-0, he will walk roughly one out of three times.

True.....

And all i hear on here is how overrated BA is. If so, maybe everyone exalts Bert because he was never expected to do anything. He might be the second least patient hitter in the lineup.

and strangely that helps a lot when trying to score runs.

If you were thinking, you wouldn't have thought that.

he does swing at everythign in the zone

but he rarely swings at anything outside

so he’s not “patient,” but he does not the strike zone

He's a nice player

By which I mean, if he could defend, he’d be a very good plus. He’s still a steal for Billy Buckner.

Ok, lets assume next year that Aviles comes back and plays 2nd.

Can Callaspo be a DH and not be a killer?

I mean, for the Royals, the answer should be yes. He’s obviously a better hitter than Jacobs or Guillen. But, would it be a terrible idea?

If you were thinking, you wouldn't have thought that.

If DDJ or Teahen go, try him at 2B

Kila?

I’ve already written him off. I’m almost convinced that Dayton’s scouts have ran his ass out of town.

If you were thinking, you wouldn't have thought that.

He's not the type of masher

where I’d like to see him pigeonholed as a DH. As d_f suggests, he might be worth a look in the outfield if the Royals can find another 2B, possibly giving Bert some defensive value. You suggested Aviles, which could work if the organization isn’t totally ignoring his existence.

I’m just a bit afraid there’s more creative roster ideas in your above comment than there is in Dayton Moore’s brain.

Willie IS signed for next year, too, right?

I mean, 2B is his “natural” position…. Why not him?
