That’s where we’ll be when this season is over!

Trying to convince a big name free agent to play in KC given al of their problems.....

Is about the same as trying to convince a premium euro club player to come to play in the MLS. Aint happening.

Then I wouldn’t be able to hear it anyway. Also, I bet the announcers on Telemundo are way more fun than any American we could put up. Is there anything better than “GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAALLLLLLLLL!!”

by Soria's Unibrow on Jul 17, 2009 10:14 PM EDT up reply actions

Yeah, but the problem isn't that we don't have big name players.

It’s that the Royals overpay for guys that are readily available everywhere.

The Betancourt deal is a perfect example of this. They go out and trade two prospects and take on salary. One week later, Julio Lugo is given his walking papers because no team has any interest in him.

If you were thinking, you wouldn't have thought that.

He could be had

for a lollipop at this point, yeah. And really, it would’ve been a pointless acquistion….but less pricey than Betancourt and without giving up anything.

Oh yeah, baby,

he’s going to be our shortstop for the next three years! That’s the point for Moore, I’m afraid.

No, there’s no point. I would understand acquiring a stopgap type guy like Lugo or whatever to fill in instead of Bloomquist et al, but sinking significant resources into bringing in an average-at-best player won’t help.

i always used to wonder how jamey wright kept getting ML jobs

because his career numbers are pretty goddamn atrocious. but now i realize he has an impressive spring training, first month even, so that by the time he starts to really suck hard the team has no better option and just continues to pile the innings on him. see: him with the rangers

DDJ has nothing moore covets

no steals
no arm
no HRs
no batting average

SBs are a really small part of any players game, but if DDJ was better at stealing and worse at everything else, moore would love him

by Freneau on Jul 17, 2009 10:59 PM EDT up reply actions

the arm thing is my favorite

Aggregate OF ARMs, 209 Royals (by UZR runs)

DDJ +5.1
Mark Teahen 0.3
MITCH 0.0
Willie B. -1.0
Freel -1.0
CoCo -4.3
Jose Guillen -4.6

As a side note, I’ve been reading up on baserunning late… while DDJ has never stolen, he _used- to be really good at taking the extra base. THrough 2007, Dan Fox had him as one of the top 15-20 guys in taking hte extra base per opportunity. Since then, though, he’s gone down hill. I wonder if it’s Owen, or just aging?

How about our hometown Tommy Watson?? Making watching early morning golf fun for a while. I’m already looking forward to watching tomorrow..

Yes, very cool.

I’m going to go play some golf tomorrow and drink beer in the clubhouse all day in order to cheer him on.

If you were thinking, you wouldn't have thought that.

Yeah

I love how he acts like the Rays were simply GENIUS to move Howell to the pen like nobody has EVER thought of that before. He thinks the Royals made a smart trade because Howell was never going to be a good starter and they would have never thought of making him a reliever.

Wait…maybe he’s right. Plus Gathright was awesome. What was it? IchiJoey? Yeah. Right.

So, because Howell sucked for a year or two after the trade makes it ok.

If that isn’t company PR work, I don’t know what is.

The fact that Soria wasn’t brought in with Crawford on base is baffling. Does he really need five fucking days off?
