Game 90 Open Thread - Rays (49-41) at Royals (37-52)
Tampa Bay Rays at Kansas City Royals, Jul 18, 2009 7:10 PM EDT
Greinke's damn close to being the only guy left on this team I care about. I can only credit Dayton Moore for drafting him, and Trey Hillman being the guy who guided him back to the starting rotation. These guys are good.

I don't understand Miggy
setting up inside of the plate against a guy that is barely even in the batter’s box he is so far away from the plate… Isn’t that kinda making up for him being so far out and putting it per se in the middle of the plate??…
Seeking inspiration to fill this space...
Watch him next time he comes up — his front step is unusual in that it’s toward the plate, not just up and down or a little forward like most guys. Pitching him inside puts the ball on his hands, taking his power away, unless of course he guesses it’s coming and adjusts to it.
Hmmm, I never watched his swing that closely...
It just seems really stupid for Miggy to do.

Time for questionable blames for the Royals offensive woes
I believe hitting coach Kevin Seitzer’s coaching is ruining Royals batters. He coaches them to look at plenty of pitches because apparently Hillman wants more walks, but Teahen and Jacobs looking at balls down the middle and swinging at junk in the dirt with two strikes is infuriating.
His up the middle/opposite field approach to hitting is ruining the pulling power of guys like Guillen, Butler and Jacobs.
At least Callaspo and Olivo seem to ignore him and show more aggressiveness and better results at the plate.
DeJesus and even Tony Pena had better results in the past by swinging and not thinking about the count.
Seitzer was an average line drive hitter as a player, a local baseball school owner and an Arizona Dback batting coach for one year. They had the sense to get rid of him after their offense was as anemic in 2006 as the Royals is today.
I’m praying that Seitzer is one and done in KC, though it’s probably too late to salvage the Royals offense this season with a change in batting attitude.

Teahen is actually my fave Royal….id b mad to see him go….and Meche is fine when he’s not injured, i dont see the gain in loosing him. and Bloomquist is one of the young bright spots on this team, and provides a spark to the rest of the guys…..its counteractive to loose him….so unless we get a Ryan Howard or something, i wouldnt be happy seeing any of these guys go…..and if they even THINK of trading Grienke i’ll quit watching the Royals for good……i understand their building for the future, but at some point the future has to become NOW and if the early season was any indicator, were not that far off

like i’ve said before, this team obviously has it’s warts but i still maintain it is better than it’s playing. i believe (obviously this can’t be measured other than looking at the results) that at least part of this is due to the manager.
the only thing i can think of is that he has been instructed by DM to not use him for more than 1 inning, but I really can’t imagine that being the case.

Leaving aside
1) that relievers 20 yeras ago regularly worked 2 or more innings an outing, and I don’t think humans have devolved that much in 20 years
and
2) the best use of your ace reliever is almost always 2 innings, period, especially in 1 run games
…if Soria really can only go one inning, then he has to be one of the most overated player out there and should be traded immediately.
