I declare this the TOM WATSON, BRITISH OPEN THREAD
How often do we get something like this to follow? It seems like more fun than posting about Yuniesky or Trey or bullpen problems.
I heard this question on the radio today: if Tom Watson holds on today should KC have a parade for him? I say yes. Tom is as big a part of Kansas City sports as the Royals and Chiefs and his winning this thing at almost 60 would be one of the biggest moments in the history of the sport. To me, that says a parade from Olathe to Liberty! Ok, not that far.

I know he has the last tee time
At like 7:30 AM CST, but when will it air on TV? I don’t follow golf much.

He's at 8:20 Central
So I assume he’ll be on ABC live.
Kansas City Royals: your 2006 and 2007 NL Central champions!
so
should he throw out the first pitch? or put a baseball over homeplate?
Enough is Enough - Fire Trey Hillman
I'd encourage him to avoid any kind of pitching with the Royals...
I got a feeling that even though he’d only be asked to throw the first pitch, Hillman would keep throwing him back out there…and I’d really hate to see what would happen when the Royals training staff gets ahold of someone at his age.

The good news
Moore can lend the organizers a hand, as he has already planned where his parade is going to be!
Mr Glass, this is a pro sports team, not a retail store - run it like one!
No Worries, Mate
The hot shot who jumped up and took the lead away just put up a snowman. Tom’s tied for the lead at -2 again.

I'd put up about 15 snowmen on that course.
Can’t even imagine what it’s like playing it.
If you were thinking, you wouldn't have thought that.
Go To Any

Watson makes about a 5-footer for par.
Those are critical today. Only 1 back of Westwood.

they should absolutely have a parade for him
we need something to cheer about in this cesspool of professional sports.
as i sit here and type, westwood goes into the DEEEEP cabbage as Tommy buries a 20-footer for a share of the lead.

Watson makes a 30-footer to tie for the lead.
He’s been playing very well, but not many putts going down until that one.
by hunter s. royal on Jul 19, 2009 11:42 AM EDT reply actions
Tommy's putts
It seems like Tom has about 8 or 9 makable putts where he has only made 1 or 2 of them. This is pretty much why he didn’t win a major after 1983, these putts.
That's so true.
Westwood just bogied 15 though, so Watson is in a tie for the lead again.

Watson with an uphiller for birdie on 15.
Wood missed his par putt at 18 or he would have been in great shape. 17 is a birdie hole, and I think at least one player left will keep it at -2 for the tournament.

Goggin's had a crazy round.
He hit it all over the place the first 7-8 holes, and had to make a bunch of long putts to save pars and even bogies. Then he started swinging well and got to -3 and looked in great shape. Then his putter turned on him.
Westwood has hit it the best, but I think the weight of the world is on him as he tries to win his first major.
by hunter s. royal on Jul 19, 2009 12:38 PM EDT up reply actions
Yes, definitely.
I think -2 probably wins now.
by hunter s. royal on Jul 19, 2009 12:45 PM EDT up reply actions
Cink misses a 6 footer for birdie at 17
that would have put him at -2. Westwood bogies seconds later, and Watson has the lead alone now.
by hunter s. royal on Jul 19, 2009 12:43 PM EDT reply actions
except I forgot that this is what Westwood does
choke on the back 9 unless it’s Ryder Cup
Absolutely.
Watson gets a bad break by going into the rough on a good tee shot, but pulls off a great shot into 16. Then Westwood hits into the deep rough on his tee shot at 17. He’ll have to work for birdie now.
by hunter s. royal on Jul 19, 2009 12:49 PM EDT up reply actions
Yes!!!
Watson makes a big par putt at 16.

Westwood hitting a 5 iron from the deep rough with the ball below his feet
and he puts on the green from 200 yards out.
Wow.
If you were thinking, you wouldn't have thought that.
Uh-oh.
Westwood gets a great lie in the rough and makes a great shot into 17. He’s got a 20 footer for eagle.

Cink makes up for the gag putts at 16 & 17 by birdieing 18.
He finishes at -2.

Still in good shape for birdie.
Get to -3 and scramble a par at 18 should be good. !8 has played very tough. Cink’s birdie was unusual there.

Watson's swing is perfect.
That x-mo replay was awesome.
If you were thinking, you wouldn't have thought that.
can't believe that rolled all the way through
UP AND DOWN, PLEASE!!!
Looks like Westwood hit into a fairway bunker on 18.
He’ll have to scramble for par most likely.

If Westwood pulls this off, that's two great shots in two holes in a row.
And holy cow, he does it.
If you were thinking, you wouldn't have thought that.
Westwood makes a great bunker shot.
He has about 60 feet for birdie.

Up and down for par.
Runs the ball right past the pin and it rolls off.
If you were thinking, you wouldn't have thought that.
He can do that.
Won’t need to though, but he could.
If you were thinking, you wouldn't have thought that.
I hope it's not another 18, that would be brutal for Watson.
(assuming based on his age)
If you were thinking, you wouldn't have thought that.
Aargh!
Great shot won’t slow down. Looks a lot like the shot he had on 17.

a little off topic,

base salary of $1k/week
5% of tournament finishes, 7% of a top ten, and 10% for a win.
That could really add up.

Cink is probably a pretty good guy...
but the whole world is hoping he fails right now.
Watson rips it down the middle
of the fairway to start the playoff. No nerves on his full swings.

He's Played Very
Conservative golf; I think that’s probably the way to go on this course.

There's so many fairway bunkers,
hitting it really long doesn’t really benefit you. Watson’s also been brilliant with his fairway woods and long irons all week.
by hunter s. royal on Jul 19, 2009 1:46 PM EDT up reply actions
And the fairways/rough allow the ball to roll so far,
you can get good distance without killing the ball.
Seems really unpredictable.
If you were thinking, you wouldn't have thought that.
No Matter What
Watson does, at least Hillman didn’t tell him to do it.
I used to be an A's fan until they left town and got good.
This could get rough.
There’s so much adrenaline going, and everything pointed to playing 18 holes. Playoffs are common here, and the players usually butcher it up a bit.
