However the math teacher in me will tell you that this could be categorized as a misleading graph because the y-axis scale (MPH) doesn’t begin at zero. For example, in the top graph, it appears that Zack threw a fastball velocity in start 19 that was nearly three times faster than in start 3 based on the length of the bars alone.

Seriously, the guy spent an entire class period lecturing on the evils of truncated axis on graphs. Obviously, I paid close attention.

But
The point is to show the variation. A few mph on a fastball is a big deal. The graph does a pretty good job of showing this.
