"The real test of a coach's mettle is not the decision itself, but how you deal with the criticism when that decision inevitably backfires. Most coaches either A) Ignore the criticism graciously, or B) Say they're ignoring it, then allow it to influence future decisions in negative ways."
"After saying that Saturday, there was no way Hillman could use Soria in the same situation Sunday, when it actually might have been a good idea. Eventually, you get to the point where you can't do ANYTHING without contradicting something you said earlier, and that's the point where you might as well hang it up."
Interesting Ron Prince @ KSU comparisons.

Ron Prince is nowhere near as cool as this guy

And his Simpsons counterpart

the funniest thing about this particular signature is that by the time you realise it doesn't say anything it's too late to stop reading it!

Soria
Not likely to happen, I realize, but would Hillman use Soria to close both games of the DH tomorrow? If he does will it jeopardize his health? Also, why does he use outs as his gauge for usage, " I’ll use him for four outs, but not five… etc." Shouldn’t he be concerned with the number of pitches he throws? What if Soria retires the side with 7 pitches for example. I wonder if he has a fixed number of pitches he would allow him to throw over a three day period? How many days in a row would he allow him to throw if he picked-up one or two batter saves in a couple of games to start a string of appearances?

Mellinger has an interesting article today about votes of confidence.
Basically says that, in most cases, a vote of confidence is a death knell. He gives one exception: Joe Torre in 1996.
Interesting
Tony Pena “quit”, Buddy Bell “resigned”, my guess is Trey also resigns, citing a need to be with his family.

I'd wholeheartedly agree
that Trey lets the criticism get to him and often makes decisions based on refuting the criticism. Being a manager for an ineptly run MLB team is hard enough without compounding your difficulties. Definitely think Hillman resisted using Soria in Saturday & Sunday’s games because he feared it would reflect badly on his decision to not use him Friday. Hillman and Moore claim they don’t let outside criticism influence their decisions, but the recent flap with Rany Jazerli and their incessant public support of the training staff puts the lie to that.
