Los Angeles Angels at Kansas City Royals, Jul 22, 2009 8:10 PM EDT
Your pitching matchup is Joe Saunders v. Brian Bannister. Could this be one of Banny's final starts as a Royal?

This better not be Bannys (bad nickname excluded) last start as a Royal
He’s a solid back of the order starter, that if the Royals had an semblance of an offense would give a team a W 50% of the time!!

I thought I heard
Hillman pretty much say the other day that Guillen not being in the lineup is bad for the “team chemistry” i.e. Guillen would whine about it. But he has total control of the clubhouse, which, according to those who can’t be educated, is the only thing a manager has to be able to do well.

any idea what the price would be for a 38 year Carlos Delgado in 2010?
Enough is Enough - Fire Trey Hillman
hmmm.... teams are getting more sensible about things
and the market really sifted last season…
I think he’s probably around a 1.5 WAR player, which would imply something like 1/$7M, or 2/$12

so
we’ll give him 20M/3?
Delgado would be a good replacement for Jacobs, if he has his power. The only minus are some political things with him that would piss off the simpletons
Enough is Enough - Fire Trey Hillman
political things? like his dislike for wearing hats?
by Fernando Vina School of Linguistics on Jul 22, 2009 7:59 PM EDT up reply actions
I wouldn't sign a 38 year-old .5 WAR player at all
since my generic salary chart assumes a .5 WAR-a-ear decline (along with 10% salaryy inflation), and especially a 1B coming off of injury at that age. But For three seasons, a 1.5 WAR player gets about $15-16M.
I really like Carlos — underrated player in his younger seasons, smart, classy guy.
The market is getting a bit smarter. But the Royals (and any smart team) not only shouldn’t be paying the average market rate for wins (and certainly not above), they should be trying to find guys who are undervalued.
Like I said, teams are getting smarter. While the Royals traded a cost=controlled reliever for replacement-level DH Mike Jacobs and a $3.2M arb contract, other teams were signing Eric Hinske and Russell Branyan for less than Bloomquist money. So I don’t see there being a big market for Delgado.
Like I said, I like him, but he doesn’t make sense for the Royals at the moment.
Even if Gordon turns into Longoria next season and Butler into Morneau, the Royals probably wouldn’t ontend next year. Delgado’s better than Jacobs, almost certainly, but not enough that the Royals should be paying him to take playing time they should be trying out on Kila.

questionable advice of the day
from the mlb.com board
For how many years now has the NL lost the All Star game to the AL? It has become an inferior league. The pitchers never have to face a DH except during inter-league play which the AL mostly wins. Their hitters face these inferior pitchers (generally speaking) so their stats do not equal the same in the AL. When you bring in a hitter from the NL their batting average normally falls, as in Jacobs, altho’ there are a few exceptions like Callaspo. But as a general rule, I do NOT think a marginal team like the Royals should shop in the NL for talent, unless the player has exceptionally good stats.
This post is prompted by an article in the Kansas City Star about Ron Cruz who did well for Arizona before coming here. But in AZ he normally didn’t have to face a DH, or hitters as good as some of our better AL hitters. Plus when switching leagues, pitchers are not as familiar with AL hitters, so there is a period of adjustment. Same thing for the hitters. They are not familiar with AL pitchers, so they have a period of adjustment. One exception would be players who have both AL and NL experience.
The Royals can’t afford to wait for an acquired player to adjust. We need immediate help. It was likely a mistake to hire a NL guy for our GM as he doesn’t seem to realize that the NL is not a place to search for talent unless the player has really superior stats over there.
Enough is Enough - Fire Trey Hillman
