more excuses for GMDM to lean on

… that’s all we need

ironically

although it will be an excuse ,

I mean, oh boy, no one’s making excuses, but boy,

the Royals sure have had a lot of injuries to key contributors

Injuries suck, and people shouldn’ wish physical harm on atheltes or anyone just for being bad at their job. But the Royals are probably better off as a team not having to run Guillen out there.

I mean, d’oh, there goes the playoffs!

yeah, i was just considering that myself

are the Royals bigger fools for paying him $12M for doing nothing or to stink up the field and lineup?

d_f- You still around?

Got a question for you about WAR

He can get 4, NOT 5.

by Warden11 on Jul 23, 2009 9:16 PM EDT up reply actions

I'll ask anyway (somebody will know)- is there an easy way to project a position player's future WAR?

I’ll use Billy Butler as my example, according to Fangraphs BB is at 1.1 WAR for this season. Call it 1.5 for the season. Would saying he is a 2.0 for next year be completely out of line?

He can get 4, NOT 5.

by Warden11 on Jul 23, 2009 9:32 PM EDT up reply actions

basically a 3 year projection?

2.0, 2.5, and 3? Too much?

He can get 4, NOT 5.

by Warden11 on Jul 23, 2009 9:41 PM EDT up reply actions

yes, there are ways to do it.

I’ve messed with doing my own super-crude projections for fun, and Sky from BtBS suggested I develop a spreadsheet for mapping out career trajectories… Not t here yet. I’ll have ot think about it.

Generic Aging curves work decently for one-year projections, but the further along you go, the less accurate they’ll be.

Maybe I’ll mess around a bit tonight and see what I can come up with. Butler’s 23 now, right (I mean his age on July 1, 2009)? So you’d expect about 3-4 more years of offensive growth…

Thanks for replying, but too late.

I played around with Sky’s trade value calculator, that’s why I was asking. Let me know if any of them are way off and I can edit the numbers.

He can get 4, NOT 5.

by Warden11 on Jul 23, 2009 10:48 PM EDT up reply actions

okay... didn't read your post yet

instead of screwing with my own projection system stuf, I just took CHONE’s 6-eyar projections. I used those (although they’re neutralized numbers) to generate wOBAs for Billy from 2010-2014. I assumed a run environment close to this season’s (about a .330 wOBA. I also used a generic replacement level. Intead of worry about his fielding too much, I assumed he was a bad defenisve 1B — about -5 as average. I assumed 85% playing time.

here are the numbers I came up with for each season:

2010 2.1
2011 2.3
2012 2.6
2013 2.5
2014 2.3

I’ll post these on the other thread if you want.

Don't worry about the playoffs

this just gives Dayton the additional urgency to complete the Kila for Willy Taveras trade.

Funny, just checked my reader and this was the first line showed:
That pop that Jose Guillen felt in his knee turned out to be as serious as the Royals feared.

Feared? I’m definitely not happy that a player was hurt, but I can’t believe they “feared” this.

He can get 4, NOT 5.

by Warden11 on Jul 23, 2009 9:16 PM EDT reply actions

they did plan to rest him the other night,

but then when the game was rained out, they played him in both legs of the next day’s doubleheader

apparently the injury was so horrendous that the MLB had to create a whole new list to put Guillen on

the Disbaled list. Wonder if John Bale knows he’s being disrespected like this! lol

by Rob5KC on Jul 23, 2009 9:17 PM EDT reply actions

Do They Even

Run spellcheck? I don’t think “disbaled” is a word. I have seen “scared matrimony” in the local paper, and when I asked them if they even read these things (it was a guest editorial by a wannabe Dr. Laura type) they said no, we just run spellcheck.

I will miss his theoretical power in the lineup. I mean, he at least had a chance of hitting one out every once in a while.

We called up MITCH

I can’t wait for more of his .280 OBP antics. Incredibly, he is an improvement over Guillen WAR-wise because of his defense. They’re both negative WAR players; MITCH is just LESS negative. He’s probably making league minimum or just above it. Jose made $12M this year and will make $12M next year to be a full win worse according to WAR. Oop, just threw up a little bit there.

At least MITCH has some plate discipline. If he can get his pathetic average up a bit he will end up being a league average player. He’s been BABIP unlucky so far at .274, so he’s due for some regression to the mean. All the projections have him OBPing anywhere between .310 and .333, and I guess I could stomach that considering his glove is average or a little above (making him the best defender on this abortion of a team not named David DeJesus).

Addendum

Jose Guillen was the least valuable position player in MLB according to Fangraphs. Talk about addition by subtraction.

there was an article in today's Omaha World Herald on Scott Thorman

and how he is playing well, can play OF, 3rd and 1st (sounds like a certain T-bag). Why didn’t they call him up? He has the Bravest background…

Thorman

I don’t think that he is on the 40 man roster. We’d probably have to DFA one of our many awesome players in order to add him and call him up.

Tension is the enemy. - Charlie Lau

by aHorseWithNoName on Jul 24, 2009 12:17 PM EDT up reply actions

I went to look up his stats so I could use them in a snarky post

But if they translated at all to the MLB level, they would really help the team. He’s hitting .291/.350/.900 with 15 HR for Omaha. He’s also decent with the glove in LF and 1B, or he was in 2006 and 2007 for the Braves.

The two years he was in the majors, he hit .234 and .216, but had an absurdly low BABIP both years—.245 and .248 respectively. You know you’re in dire straits if you find yourself wishing for Scott Thorman, but I wouldn’t mind seeing if he could do something for us. He couldn’t be any worse than what we’ve been running out there, he’s put up an OPS of .800 or higher 6 times in the minors, and hasn’t had nearly enough AB’s in the majors to make a definitive decision on how good he is.

Give him a shot. What the hell do we have to lose besides more baseball games?

by Soria's Unibrow on Jul 24, 2009 12:17 PM EDT up reply actions

Of course,

should Thorman succeed, Moore would claim that it’s “part of the process,” even though he never would get playing time without injuries to others. Not that I’m saying he will succeed.

by BrRoyal on Jul 24, 2009 12:33 PM EDT up reply actions

Correct me if I am wrong

But don’t MLB teams take out insurance policies on their contracts, so if a player does get hurt and misses a large chunk of the season, they get some $$ from an insurance policy?
