Game 96 Overflow Thread

Luke Hochevar has been incredible and for that reason, the Royals still have a 40% chance of holding on and winning this game.

He's so rested

That he’s gonna get 2 innings to warm up

He'll get the first 4 outs....

Then we bring in TPJ.

Remember,

Trey is in the clubhouse.

He’s probably pissed right now.

He can get 4, NOT 5.

What did trey get tossed for.. I missed it

Bloomquist. God? Or just an illusion? You be the judge.

Argued a close call at first.

Ump called Yuni out

He can get 4, NOT 5.

I didn't quite catch it -

was it actually a bad call?

It could have definitely gone either way,

On the super slo-mo, he did look safe.

He can get 4, NOT 5.

last time a Royals pitcher has K'd 13 in a game

Kevin Appier, 13 Ks in 8, August 29th, 1996

But the Royals have had two 13 K games in under 8 innings. Name them

Extra note

that Gibbons is potentially going against Trey’s plan to use Soria in only 5 outs?

the two games with 13 Ks in under 8 innings

Tom Gordon, April 1991: 13 Ks in 7 IP

Kevin Appier, May 1994 13 Ks in 5 2/3 IP

For that second game.. 13 Ks, 17 outs.

Hochevar is becoming a #2 szzztarter right before our eyes

Soria is pitching before the 9th!!! This is incredible – even if someone else relieves him

What’s next, Gordon learns how to hit?

by GobbleforCyoung on Jul 25, 2009 9:21 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

denny speculating on the radio feed

that they j ust want soria in to face the top of the order here

-

by slayor on Jul 25, 2009 9:21 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

I would be somewhat impressed if that is the plan.

Otherwise, the 2 inning save with a 3 run lead is a little crazy.

He can get 4, NOT 5.

by Warden11 on Jul 25, 2009 9:22 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Let Cruz pitch the 9th

It doesn’t matter…the 8th is just as important as the 9th…let Soria face the top/middle of the order

by GobbleforCyoung on Jul 25, 2009 9:22 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

NO

Unless Soria has like 40 pitches or runners on-base, don’t relieve him in the 9th

I have to agree

but it’s still a problem for Trey that he absolutely won’t make a move that would help the team on principle, until he suddenly changes his mind and can.

by 2X2L on Jul 25, 2009 9:32 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I'm sure we'll hear more irrational explanations:

-we had a 10-game losing streak
-wanted to protect luke’s effort
etc

that’s how these guys think… no consistency, no logic, etc. remember, they’re basically die hard baseball romantics

but in this case, i’ll take it

by royalsreview on Jul 25, 2009 9:30 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

yeah, i'll take it

but you’re right, UNLESS somebody else pitches the top of the ninth, there is really no excuse.. i’m guessing hillman says that Soria came to him before the game and said he was fine to pitch 2 innings / do whatever it took.

Just for fun.....

LHP Jeremy Affeldt has thrown 27 straight scoreless innings and owns the lowest ERA among big-league relievers with at least 25 outings. In 39 1/3 innings this year, the defense has turned 14 double plays.
