Royals Links: Heading to Baltimore Edition
I'd really like to attend a Royals-Orioles game in Baltimore this week, but I'm not sure it's in the cards. You can read up on the Baltimore accent here or here, a minor obsession of mine at the moment. How come KC never got a distinct city accent? Or is there one?

Hochevar's pitching after being called a bust on Sportsline
is pretty impressive. I do like the mentality he puts across of being a tough bulldog pitcher. And if he saw what CBS Sportsline said, and it lit a larger fire, then that’s good too. The article came out on June 10th.
And this is coming from someone who wasn’t happy with Luke until he went on his current tear.

Why subject yourself to the torture of seeing the KC Foibles get destroyed in a foreign park?
I already did this in St Louie earlier – not pleasant. Although, I will say no St Louie fans said a word to me. I think they almost “feel our pain”.

We're very friendly in Baltimore
plus I feel that our ball clubs are kindred spirits.
Besides, have you seen the Orioles? Very likely the Royals won’t get destroyed at all.

Tillman is on my fantasy team
I also have Branyan.
I only wish Langerhans had come over to the AL sooner — we have “waiver bidding” and I wasn’t willing to go $20+ on him.

Like Balentien, it would probably take something shiny
maybe a little shinier since he plays a decent CF. But the O’s outfield is set for, what, the next six years, so I doubt the asking price would be cost prohibitive. The O’s gave up little to get him, and his stock has not exactly gone up this year.
Pie would not be a bad choice as a cheap Endy Chavez-style, defense-first stopgap. He would at least be a different type of low OBP hitter for the Royals, as it would be the lack of contact, not walks, keeping him off the bases.
Anyway, it beats giving Marlon Byrd (who I like) a Gary Matthews Jr. contract or using the proceeds from non-tendering Teahen and Bannister for a Johnny Damon homecoming.

Re: Byrd
Yes, Dayton Moore will probably eventually get around to getting hte guys I like… I look forward to Byrd getting 3/$24, Branyan getting #/$36, and Ryan Langerhans getting acquired for Duffy and Pie for DDJ+Teahen.

Pie's minor league performance was always really impressive
especially since he was almost always young for the leagues, right?
I’m not saying he could still be an offensive superstar, but it’s not like he doesn’t have some upsdie there as well, right?

These things need to happen this week:
1) Signing of Balentein and immediately inserting him into the starting lineup
2) 2 or 3 changes made with bullpen personnel
3) At least one trade of a Royals veteran where the team actually gets a good player or prospect in return
I expect none of these things to happen, but if at least 2 of the 3 occur, I may salvage some respect for DM. He would have already completely lost me by now
if he hadn't so astutely drafted Greinke, Hochevar, Gordon, and Butler
by jsolo on Jul 26, 2009 11:17 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
Moore seriously failed the team last season when he made no trades of note...
but now I feel that really he has no good trades to make
If we assume that Greinke & Soria are untouchable, then who could he trade?
by royalsreview on Jul 26, 2009 11:27 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
I think he could still get some value from
Teahen or Dejesus, maybe even Olivo (though he should have traded him after his career month in June)
I could see Buck going for a minor prospect to a contending team in need of catching depth, but that’s a long shot.
I don’t know if he’d trade Callaspo, but I think given how well he can hit and how cheap he is, it could be a very good move. The Royals need his bat, but since the team’s only strength this year is starting pitching, they really should just work on shoring up the defense for now. Callaspo gives up much of his offensive advantage with awful defense. Some GM is sure to overpay for a young 2B who can hit very well. I honestly don’t believe his defense will improve though, making him expendable to the Royals. Having Betancourt and Callaspo in the middle – well, you’d be better off putting Buck and Olivo out there.
by jsolo on Jul 26, 2009 11:56 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
There aren't any Gms in baseball who are so inferior to DaytoN Moore that he can pull stuff on
Callaspo is almost exaclty average when you combine his bat and glove. At $400,000, there’s no point in givingup on his for anything less than that. He’s 26. Again, if there’s something out there for him, pull the trigger, but I doubt he’s valued that highly.
he used to trade relievers… but teams are much more excited to trade for young, cost-controlled, and good relievers than terribel guys on terrible contracts in their 30s… so, yeah, Dayton’s usual “tricks” won’t work with this team.
He’s done a heckuva job.

Meche if he was healthy
but he’s not, selling low
some people would say gordon… but that’d really be selling low
The team has seemingly been trying to trade or maringalize Butler for a while… not sure it’s quite the right time yet.
DDJ’s bat is returning to norma. PRetending that Dayton Moore had a clue about player valuation, DDJ’s got value, especially on his screw-the-player contract. I love DDJ, but now’s the time for a team like the Royals to be selling all their guys 29 and over.
Teahen’s revived his career (where are all the “non-tender Teahen!” people now?), and while he costs a bit more in arb and isn’t as good a player as DDJ was at his age, he’s younger, can play some 3B as well as the OF corners — and, contrary to some people, isn’t just a “super-utility” except maybe on the top 2-3 teams in baseball. He’s not a star, but he’s a solid starter. That has value.
I guess anyone’s tradable if Moore knows what they are worth. I have doubts about that, of course. Yes, that includes Greinke. Seriously, just hypothetically, putting emotions aside, I think you’d have to take Longoria straight up for Greinke — Longoria’s arguable the best positoin player in the American League, he’s still getting better, and he’s tide up in a horrific (for him and his agent, who should have his license pulled) for the next 8 years or something. he’s good enough no defense he could probably play above average SS. Greinke’s historically great, but relative to Longoria, he’s more expensive and only under control for 3 more years. Even ifyou think he’s a bit more valuable straight up,t he contract makes Longoria a more valuable trade chip.
The point being, anyone should be available. Some guys just require things teams would be stupid to giveup (i.e., the Rays would need more than just Greinke to make the Longoria trade fair on their side).

He says: Grade B-: Tools guy continues to improve his skills.
I’ve heard he has excellent defense, can steal bases, can draw a walk now and then and isn’t totally bereft of power. Sounds a lot like a young Coco Crisp to be honest.

isn’t necessarily a negative in Dayton’s book. It’s the “openly willing to take a walk (or TWO!!), in blatant contravention of The Process” that DM has a big problem with.

I haven't figured out the Balentien thing yet
Are lousy outfielders the new currency of baseball? Wladi is young, it’s just that his OBP doesn’t impress me and he’s not being held back by Safeco (he hits better there). We seem to be running a surplus on guys who can’t get on base.
Wilkin Ramirez. John Bowker. Sam Fuld. I’d like a young outfielder not on the verge of losing his ML job. Someone blocked by another player, or by organizational ineptitude

people want him on the condition that he's close to free
I’d give up a Saito-type for him in the next 10 days, but then he goes to waivers
he doesn’t have enough of a sample at Safeco to sa much about it; moreover, all hitters generally hit better at home, so he might be getting that bump. I used Brian Cartwright’s regressed component park factors and Wlad’s neutralized stats and he would hit a bit better at Kaufman.
He’s worth taking a chance on for nothing. Better than wasting PAs on the usual Dayton Moore crap.

Definitely worth taking a chance on
When you have Freel or Bloomquist starting everyday in your OF, there is absolutely no reason whatsoever that you don’t take a chance on Balentein.
That being said, the current FO thinks that the bullpen is fine with its current personnel after blowing game after game. Meanwhile perfectly legitimate replacement options waste away at Omaha. So I doubt they’d actually make the intelligent decision here.

we just gave up two guys for Yuniesky
what makes you think the asking price for Wladi is going to be just 1/3 of a Yuniesky? I’d imagine that the Seattle GM wants to take us to the woodshed again and will do so here. He’d want to be to Dayton what Billy Beane was to Allard Baird.
And 222 PAs isn’t a small sample. Perhaps having the equivalent of a half season of PAs would be nice. The differences between his home and away lines is 10 PA, 15 AB, 10 Hits, 2 doubles, 7 walks, and 2 strikeouts. And every stat is higher at Safeco, except his walks (11 in 222 at home, or 18 in 218 on the road).
Walks, that would go up here. But it’s not exactly encouraging and i’m getting sick of these low walk-rate/low OBP types on this team.
If we’re looking for a young outfielder who won’t cost us much, i’d imagine there are still options out there.

He'll still cost something shiny
DFA does not always mean the player will cost virtually nothing, especially with the trade deadline already looming. The M’s had likely decided to trade him this week anyway (and probably have at least one deal in their pocket), so the move was probably made to free up a roster spot in the interim. There were several teams interested in Lugo even after his DFA, and the Sox got a decent return in Duncan. Wlad certainly should not cost anybody who would be seriously missed, but he will cost something.

that we don’t seem to be making any moves. the ONLY way this team is going to get significantly better is to make some major and minor moves.

now if Freel were to hit the wall again, a trade might be more likely.
Unless the plan involves waiting for Parraz to take Guillen’s spot, and hoping everything doesn’t crumble by 2011.. i’m pretty sure Dayton doesn’t have it

Anything you can run up in under 45 days
is small. I admit that 222 isn’t preferable to a half season of PAs too.
But the amount of ML time he has is twice the amount of time that Callaspo had before coming to KC.
As for the minor league stuff, it’d take some complex work since Bert played a good chunk of his minor league ball at hitter friendly locations (I’m pretty sure Tucson has a good rep, SLC’s 4000 feet above sea level does, Provo too). Balentien’s walk rate only spiked in San Antonio which would tell me “unintentional intentional walk” since he’s the only guy on that team that hit for power.
I’m not sure if I can buy into a guy with OBP issues and power for this park.

I'm not saying he's good
I’m saying he’s worth taking a flyer on if he’s cheap or free
He has potential.
half a season isn’t an adequate sample, either.
Do I really need to make a list of players who hit about as bad as Balentien over 200 or 300 MLB PAs then later turned out to be good hitters?
Here’s just one:
In his first two MLB seasons, his age 25 and 26 years (this is Balentien’s age 24 year, since he turned 25 after July 1), his hitter had 303 PAs and his .200/.234/.509.
Since then, Ben Zobrist has hit .282/.384/.547 in 568 PAs.
Balentien probably won’t = Zobrist. Heck, the current Zobrist doesn’t = Zobrist. But it does give an idea of what the sample size issue is.

As long as everyone keeps in mind that Wlad is a project
not an immediate solution or someone to plan around, this would be a reasonable gamble. This would be exactly the type of move the Royals should be making over and over again (even if Wlad is not the best example).
He might not make enough contact to play regularly (and while he might walk at a league average clip, he will not walk enough to make up for a seriously low batting average), but the power is real and the solid defense makes him useful even if he never quite figures things out.
