The Current 25 Man Roster

Just a little depressing exercise I usually do with my fantasy baseball teams - Identify the dead wood.

Star-divide

Ok, just for fun today I decided to go through the Royals' roster and get rid of all the guys we could really do without and not particularly miss if they were replaced with some guy from AAA. Here's what I came up with:

John Bale
Brian Bannister
Bruce Chen
Roman Colon
Juan Cruz
Zack Greinke
Luke Hochevar
Ron Mahay
Gil Meche
Joakim Soria
Robinson Tejeda
Jamey Wright
John Buck
Miguel Olivo
Brayan Pena
Willie Bloomquist
Billy Butler
Alberto Callaspo
Ryan Freel
Tony Pena
Mark Teahen
David DeJesus
Jose Guillen
Mitch Maier

Mike Jacobs

Just a quick note or two: I got rid of all 3 catchers because, really, would I miss any of them? Brayan Pena would be fun to have around, but I wouldn't get up in arms if I found out tomorrow he was out for the season. Half the guys that I marked off, I'd actually be glad if they couldn't be in the lineup anymore this season. Frankly, our hitters are such a joke that we might as well be playing AAA guys. If you told me that starting tomorrow Butler/Kila would be our everyday 1B/DH, I doubt I'd even ask what will happen to the Jacobs/JoGui/Olivo DH trio from Hell. If you said that once Gordon came back, Teahen would start everyday in RF, I'd be happy. If you told me Freel and Pena were cut, I'd be estatic. If Chen, Wright, and Maier are all in AAA tomorrow, I wouldn't miss them.

So that's my "analysis." 11 guys off the 25 man roster are basically meaningless. Blackholes of suck bringing almost nothing to the table and, on the rare occasion they do bring something, they end up spilling it all over themselves.

yeah, basically there's no legit SS, C, or CF...

really, that’s a fair statement as to how it is any night in our lineup. How bout that strength up the middle.

you really can't judge a GM until after 8-10 years of continually increasing payroll and development money

well, I should say, you can’t say he’s done a bad job. YOu know, you HAVE to recognize what he’s done write.

But, yeha, 8-10 years before the bad stuff can be blamed on him.

Also

We don’t know if the scouts he hired have done a good enough job of stocking his minor leagues for him. We know know whether he is a good judge of (scouting) talent for another few years.

Until then, his sucess at the Major League level doesn’t enter the discussion.

I'm pretty sure the major league team needs at least one catcher

Keeping either Buck or Olivo along with Pena isn’t great, but it’s not really bad, either. And Mitch Maier IS the AAA CF (currently Tim Raines Jr. or Tommie Murphy. Yikes.). And Hernandez WAS the AAA shortstop (it’s now Mario Lisson, who’s tearing up the PCL with a .680 OPS. But he does have 7 HR. MARIO NOW!!!!).

Yeah, it was a stupid screen name.

If you're going to cross off Wright

Then I’d probably put Bale, Mahay, and Colon in the same category.

Could they just set up a pitching machine

to take the 7th inning?

Yeah, it was a stupid screen name.

You can't say Dayton Moore doesn't know how to build a bullpen!

Good post, though thoroughly depressing

I might try to reclaim Brayan, Bloomy, and MITCH only because they’re quality backups and a team does need decent role players for those spots

Good post, I second that

Though all the cross outs makes me fearful, and also not hungry for BBQ
