There’s certainly nothing wrong with the Braves Way, which (along with the services of three Hall of Fame pitchers) helped Atlanta to 14 division titles. But someone needs to tell Dayton Moore, Dean Taylor, J.J. Picollo, and all the other guys that came over from Atlanta: it’s not 1995 anymore, fellas.... while the rest of baseball is moving forward, the Braves Way seems bent on proving that you can still win with scouts alone. It’s not a coincidence that the Braves themselves have fallen on hard times the last few years, or that the purest distillation of the Braves Way in a single player, Jeff Francoeur, has turned into, well, Jeff Francoeur.
Rany Jazayerli. I eagerly await Dayton Moore's post-2010 interview in which he says that "we have to improve our Ultimate Zone Rating," followed by a 4-year, $70M contract for new LF Adam Dunn a week later.

the thing is...
you would think that defense would be old-school enough for them
but instead, it got overwhelmed by their greater old school emphasis on RBIs

I meant it to be a reference to the JoPo "OBP" interview followed by the Jacobs acquisition
But really , the defense thing it isn’t a “new school” vs “old school” issue. And in the big scheme of things, the scouts vs. stats thing is only tangential. The issue is whether, by whatever means, Moore. et. al., know how to value major league players.

that's the issue in my last line, anyway
I just liked the quote from Rany… it’s almost like he’s been reading Royals Review. Cf. Especially his stuff about Moore’s judgment of players’ future vs. present potential. Seems like I’ve read similar comments somewhere…

Don't know if you're joking or not d_f
but Rany linked to a post by Loyal2’sdad in this column, so obviously he follows the site.

Jim Wong Interview Now!
“The lowest point came when I called into a meeting with the baseball operations staff. I was on the speaker phone trying to explain why Horacio Ramirez’s home run rate from last year was unsustainable. But somebody in the room was mocking me by relaying the old Saturday Night Live skit about George Will not being able to throw a baseball. There was hearty laughter. They thought they were on mute, but I could hear. I could hear everything. When I was done, I heard a beep and Dayton say ’that’s super, Jim.’ After that, I pretty much stuck to sending emails.”

Just for the record
It’s Jin Wong. I’ve spelled it with two "N"s to manyh times, to I finally looked it up again.
You know, just in case RR ever gets around to requesting an interview from our intrepid hero, it might be a good idea to get his name right, and I’d hate to feel responsible for getting it wrong.

I suppose the “Jim” running joke was tiring out anyway

This again seems to oversimplify the "scouts vs. stats" debate
I’m pretty confident that “The Braves Way” is not “all scouting” any more than “Moneyball” is “all statistics”

I think his point is...
Dayton’s using stats in the wrong way. He reads what he wants to read without seeing the downside of the other stats available. It’s like when some guys see a hot girl, they just see a hot girl. When other guys see a hot girl, they notice the pack of marlboro’s, the sleeve of tats, and the knuckle piercings and think twice about it.

My bathroom reading material is "Built to Win" by John Schuerholz
Which I’ve been neglecting lately. In it, John goes out of his way to mock “Moneyballers”, but then goes on to say that it’s not that they never look at stats. In fact, he’s never made a move without a huge dossier of all kinds of info, statistical analyses included. He says he would never make a deal without that, and he would never make a deal without at least 1 scout giving approval. Plus, they need to fit in the clubhouse, and be a team guy. They vet their FA and trade acquisitions extremely thoroughly from what I’ve been reading. I think part of Dayton’s problem is that maybe he wasn’t involved in much of that, as he isn’t mentioned in any of that stuff. It’s mostly John and Frank Wren.
