Royals Stun Red Sox, Keep Pace with Indians in AL Central

Who saw that coming?

  • The Royals pounded out 13 hits (some of which were even for extra bases), stole three bases and managed to get through a game with no one getting picked off or thrown out on the basepaths.
  • St. Willie continued his hot streak!
  • DDJ got a start in CF!
  • Luke Hochevar wasn't great -- 6.0 IP, 9 Hs, 5 Ks, 1 BB, 5 Rs -- but he kept his head above water against a tough lineup that hits extremely well at home.
  • Kudos to Trey for bringing in Soria in the eighth inning. Sure, it was maybe a batter too late, and sure, I'm guessing we'll read a typically weird quote about the whole sequence at some point, but at least he brought him in.
  • Finally, apparently Ken Burns was at the game tonight filming, obviously because he wanted to showcase the Royals. I look forward to the maudlin voiceovers against still photos that are sure to follow.

i'm no expert....

but id think that playing 40 or so games in SF, SD and LA would make up alot of the advantages he gets from AZ park. Ya think?

by billybeingbilly on Jul 9, 2009 11:04 PM EDT up reply actions

it probably all averages out given the game he also plays in all the other parks - the non-home games pretty much even out

although they do play an unbalanced schedule. that’s how (good) park adjustments work. Colorado is also in that league.

But that’s what I’m saying — even after you adjust for that, he’s still having a heck of a year.

Interesting tidbit: The realy good park factors I got from this dude (5-year regressed) actually has SFN, whlie depressing HR rates, as increasing overall scoring. LAD deflates run-scoring, but increases HRs. I was surprised, but I"ve seen other factors that see the same thing.

Since he came back from Omaha in June, the Royals have scored at least four runs in every one of his starts.

Even though Hochevar wasn't all that good,

I was impressed by how well he battled. He CLEARLY did not have his best stuff – more groundouts than flyouts – and while five runs in six innings certainly isn’t good, as Will mentioned the Sox line-up is very talented and hits the snot out of the ball at home. Overall, I think he gets a passing grade.

BtVS gets better the second Angel gets lost at the end of the 3rd season. The fourth season was actually really, really good. I got into the show waaaaay late – I was a big Firefly fan – so I haven’t got through everything yet. But if the 4th season is the start of a decline phase, I’ll still sign it for four years and fifty million.

I hated the college years

Angel leaving was good, and I never really liked him on Buffy. But in a weird, way, while Buffy took itself waaaaay too seriously, as time went on the show Angel took on the self-ironizing charm (without the irritating suburban Calif. “witticisms” of the original Buffy) that the first couple Seasons of Buffy had.

In a perfect world, the show would have ended after the last episode of Season 2.

then at least they would have an excuse for all the storylies they dropped.

Season 4 is the “Riley” season, right? Worst. Season. Ever.

Maybe it's my unrequited love for Sarah Michelle talking,

but I don’t think the show ever really loses its self-irony. Granted, only halfway through the fifth season, and there’s still some pretty goofy stuff that indicates to me that Whedon/whoever else wrote for it weren’t too into themselves and making the show completely series. I mean, it’s a show that frequently starts out with a college age girl talking smack to vampires as she beats them up. Maybe the show starts taking itself too seriously in the last two seasons, but I haven’t seen it yet.

Angel was just a bad character. I was left pretty bored watching the show. I really, honestly, never have seen why Whedon fell in love with that character. Though I will say one of the interesting things about Whedon’s style is that you can enjoy picking apart the places where he seems to slip up, whereas with some other shows I’d just be facepalming my way back to Cowboy Bebop or Deadwood or some other show that never went wrong.

While I did like the first two seasons, I can’t agree the show should’ve stopped there. And yeah, Riley and Buffy wasn’t particularly exciting, I suppose, but man, are relationships usually? But it’s just because I like the social commentary stuff that I disagree so starkly, but I did like season four a lot.

It’s certainly not a perfect show – not in Firefly’s league – but I still think it’s “good.”

"Do they have people that tall in Mexico?"

by NHZ on Jul 9, 2009 11:48 PM EDT up reply actions

never saw Firefly

the social commentary was better in the first couple seasons when it was more subtle, not when it was self-righteously flung in the viewers face in later seasons

although the villans in the second-to-last season were hilarious

slowly killing off Xander’s character in the last four seasons also blew

the one with Willow’s girlfriend’s parents was a heavy-handed piece of predictable Hollywood schlock

Hmm

Season 4 and you clearly have a history. Did it hurt you? C’mon d_f, I can’t help unless you let me in. winky face and all that.

Xander kinda functions as the moral compass guy for 4/5, dunno about the later seasons. I’ve always kind of liked the honesty of that character.

I’m just not sure about the use of “self-righteous” there. It doesn’t come off as that heavy-handed to me, really. Some of the scenes are hollywood-ized, yeah, but I don’t think the message gets lost and ends up coming as pretentious. I think that the Willow-Tara thing was, overall, pretty cool because the relationship was treated as very normal.

"Do they have people that tall in Mexico?"

by NHZ on Jul 9, 2009 11:58 PM EDT up reply actions

I just hated the episode with Tara's parents

Joss Whedon, et. al. can vent their bitterness over growing up in “repressive” small towns elsewhere, preferably without aesthetic disasters

Some of the relationship was okay. but it was overdrawn by the end. All the witch bullshit was.

Crap like Twilight is the logical extension of the worst of Buffy.

I’m only mad about it because I liked the show so much the first couple seasons.

I look forward to Chuck being butcher the same way — but it has the same ethos, and, incidentally, was created by the same people who did the OC. Super-ironic. It’s also like Buffy, with a girl who kicks ass (but is legit super-hot), and making the everyman loser/sidekick (Chuck/Xander) the hero.

and why the f-- did they drop so many storylines?

that’s one of the most important rules of nerd television

I also suspect Whedon wanted to get Xander and Willow together in the end (he was clearly leaning that way at the end of either season 5 or 6 — where Willow went nuts), but was worried about people throwing a fit because of Willows’ alleged role on the show.

Dang

Another corner of the where not having my Joss Whedon fan club card has failed me. None of his shows have done a thing for me. And, no, Firefly was doomed from the start- not enough mass appeal for the network it was on. If it would have been on SciFi or a similarly small network, it would have pulled good numbers but it wasn’t nearly mainstream (i.e. “mostly” in the real world, like X-Files, Lost, Medium, etc) enough to get the numbers you need on a network, even Fox.

Oh, and if I thought this were possible in tv- which I don’t because money speaks volumes more than sentiment in that business- in the back of my mind, I have this sick thought that Fox renewed “Dollhouse” just to stick it to the Whedon fans. We all know it’s not going to pull bigger numbers next year- it’s going to do the same sad numbers as this year and get canned at the end of season 2, if it even makes it through the entire season. And then Fox is going to go “See, we gave him a shot so all of you people can stop complaining about Firefly”.

Then again, I’m still ticked because Terminator was pulling better numbers than Dollhouse and it got canceled. That was quickly becoming one of my favorite shows on tv and I thought it was one of the smartest, tho you had to be patient to watch it as it wasn’t quick moving.

by sterlingice on Jul 10, 2009 9:34 AM EDT up reply actions

Firefly was extremely good.

And we’ll never know now what kind of rating it could’ve got if the idiot network had aired it in order. Sorry, but I don’t buy that Firefly would’ve failed because of not being “mainstream” enough. Not with the following it’s developed.

Yes, renewing dollhouse is supposed to be an apology for that. Dollhouse isn’t good.

"Do they have people that tall in Mexico?"

by NHZ on Jul 10, 2009 3:01 PM EDT up reply actions

Terminator was cancelled?

I’m disappointed. I really liked the show, and thought the final episode was quite the cop out in case they didn’t come back.

Same with Reaper. That show was just hitting its stride, and they left it open ended in case they were cancelled, which they probably will be.

I don’t care for most Joss Whedon stuff. The Firefly movie was ok, Dr. Horrible’s Sing Along Blog was sorta funny, but for the most part, I think he’s entirely overrated.

And Dollhouse looked like crap. Though it managed to freak me out the night of the Battlestar Galactica finale since there were 2 BSG cast members on that episode, and my DVR should have been taping it, I thought BSG was doing some really weird ending. It wasn’t until I realized I was watching Fox that I finally realized it was Dollhouse. BSG was taping on the other TV. Disaster averted.

while having another awesome season

but don’t worry, I’m sure he’ll break down any minute and we’ll be glad the Royals didn’t draft him…

I think we can say he’s the best pitcher in the NL right now

that it’s not “he’s having the best year but maybe someone else is better overall.” Nope. He’s the best in the NL.

it'll be interesting to see if there are lots of copycats of his mechanics in the next few years....

there was some guy trying to teach this shit like 20 years ago and he was laughed out of baseball

Zack is still having the most ridiculous year in a lnog time

if he keep this up (that’s a bit if), it will be the most dominating performance since Pedro ‘99. What’s scary is taht Lincecum might be having the next best performanceint he same year.

Okay, goodnight..
